Coraline and her parents, who are originally from Oregon, decide to move to Michigan and live in the Pink Palace Apartments. Her parents are always busy and have very little time for her. Being young she became bored and decided to go and explore.

Call to Adventure

While exploring her new home she finds a small door hidden behind the wallpaper. She is curious and begs her mother to open it. Annoyed by the persistence her mother opens it and her excitement soon fades away seeing a brick wall. Forgetting about the door and heading off to bed she dreams of the door and what truth is behind it.

Refusal of the Call

The next morning Coraline sets off to meet her new neighbors. She talks to a man that goes by Mr. Bobinsky, he tells her how his mice said to not enter the door. Feeling a little uneasy she leaves and decides to meet Ms. Forcible and Ms. Spink downstairs. They send her off with a gift to see "the unseen".

Crossing the Threshold

In the middle of the night, Coraline is awakened by mice. Confused, she gets up to follow them. They lead her to the tiny door so she decides to open it. To her surprise there was a purple tunnel that replaced the brick wall. Being curious she crawls inside until she reaches the end of the tunnel. Exiting the tunnel, she sees her house, but it seems different. Following an unfamiliar smell, she reaches the kitchen to see her mom... but her eyes were buttons.

Meeting the Mentor

Going through the door for a second time she sees one of her neighbor's cat but he can now talk. He warns Coraline of the other mother and how this new world isn't a dream come true like she thinks. There are things she can't see because she is blinded from the new attention she is getting.

Allies, Trials, and Enemies

She became close with her other father and the other Wybie who both warn her of the other mother. With her other mother convincing her to sew buttons into her eyes she starts to become the "enemy".

Approach to the Inmost Cave

Coraline meets the ghost children that the other mother had sewed buttons into their eyes. Feeling heroic Coraline has a plan to override the other mother. She knows the other mother likes riddles so she decides to play a game. Coraline says that if she doesn't solve the riddle then the other mother can sew buttons into her eyes, but if she solves the riddle she has to free all of the ghost children and her parents.

The Supreme Ordeal

After solving all of the riddles using the gift she got from Ms.Spinks and Ms. Forcible she confronts the other mother. The other mother traps her inside the room with the ghost children. When trapped she frees them.

The Road back

After escaping with the help of the other Wybie, Coraline sets off to escape and find her parents. The other mother catches Coraline and swallows the key that Coraline needed to escape. Coraline makes a move and throws the cat at her other mother and heads towards the tunnel. Turning around to close the door her other mothers hand is in between and gets cut off.

Return With the Prize

When Coraline comes home she sees all of the snow globes on the mantle are broken. She goes to the front door and is overjoyed to see her parents again. That day her and Wybie find the other mothers hand and throw it down a well. With everything back to normal, her and her family are gardening and spending time with their new neighbors.
