My institution talks a big game about supporting marginalized students but I see nothing for queer students (no learning community, no center, no events, no robust website with resources). I started a convo with other faculty around supporting queer students and brought some ideas to admin but without dedicated time and $ it fizzled out. What can I do?

I sometimes struggle with remem bering folks' preferred pronouns, especially when they don't necessarily have the signifiers or present as their preferred pronouns, say, with colleagues. Then I remember and feel bad and am not sure how to respond esp if it has happened more than once. Do they secretly hate me? I realize it takes practice.

While many people feel safe in libraries, I think they are unsafe places. Thefts, assaults, authoritarianism, discrimination, and other harmful activities and conditions are the norm in libraries.

We need to ensure we have books in our collection that talk about LGBTQ+. Most libraries have limited books or budgets.

We also have to think about intersectionality! Do we have any books on Blacks/Latinx/indigenous and queer in our collections?

Libraries put out cultural heritage months displays, but we can be more proactive by intentionally including books that talk about being a person of color and gay, etc.

Small steps but increases awareness and shows that we care.

My college has a preferred-name option, but some campus software and/or APIs don’t support diacritics like accent marks, so onscreen names are misrepresented. Are there coding standards to ensure accent marks are retained across platforms?

The Rainbow Round Table of the American Library Association has freely available resources such as a tool kit as well as lists of award-winning and recommended books. Even if you are not an ALA member, you can find support from the Round Table.

Sacramento has an awesome communitarian Lavender Library on 21st St. Check it out before leaving town if you have time.
