Post what you think the aims of health psychology should be. Critically reflect on the aims outlined by Matarazzo, and post what you think the four aims do not take into account?

I believe the aims are Health Psychology are complex. There are a multitude of different areas within Health Psychology, all of which have the goal of improve health. Health Psychologists investigate promoting healthy behaviours, such as quitting smoking. There is also a need for introducing complex health care interventions, such as intervening with subthreshold depression to reduce the chances of extreme symptoms later in an individual’s life. There is also a lot of attention paid to the patient doctor relationship and how communication within health care settings can be improved. For example, the use of PROMS within treatment and looking into quality of life. Health Psychologists also aim to provide fair and equal treatment for all. This includes looking at racism within the health system, such as differing levels of painkillers given to different ethnicities and the role of racism in the formation of healthcare, such as the Tuskegee experiment. Furthermore, looking at how men and women are treated differently and how they may respond differently to treatment. There is evidence in cases of men with gynecomastia that found online forums with other sufferers helped a lot more than face to face meetings with health care professionals, due to the stigma surrounding gynecomastia. Finally, I believe Health Psychology aims to empower individuals suffering from illness, disease, or unhealthy behaviours. This is achieved by monitoring and improving the doctor patient relationship, moving away from the paternalistic view, and using patient centred care. There is more to Health Psychology than just looking at disease or illness in a reductionist way.
Although Mazaratto’s aims fit well within Health Psychology, they appear to portray a narrow view. As mentioned above, Health Psychology is complex and its not just about the illness itself. For example, there is ongoing research into the quality of life of individuals with curative lung cancer. A complex health care intervention was created to assess the individual’s wellbeing and not just the disease. Health Psychology is about looking past just the illness or the behaviour which is seen as unhealthy. It is about improving the health care system for all cultures and races, genders or any group which could be subjective to discrimination. It is also about improving the experience of illness and treatment for all individuals, and improving the communication delivered and received by health care professionals to build the strongest relationship possible between professional and client.
