Ratliff makes a unique claim on the use of repetition. He explains how in music there can not be repetition without variation, and likewise, there can not be variation without repetition. He describes how people will make variations of music to make it their own and give it a new meaning. Meanwhile, repetition may not give too much additional meaning to the music itself. Repetition may be used to emphasize a group of lyrics or an instrumental run. From Ratliff's playlist at the end of this chapter, I chose to examine Kesha's "We R Who We R" because there are several instances in which repetition, and variation, are used.
