The Hawaiian Islands are geological features themselves as they are are volcanic regions. They were formed by hot spot in the middle of the Pacific Plate. A hot spot is essentially a volcanic region of magma that is fed by underlying mantle that is significantly hotter than the surrounding mantle. The Pacific Ocean is mostly floored by a single tectonic plate that is moving over the layer in the Earth known as the Asthenosphere. The pacific plate is moving over magma and when it moves it allows for some magma to push through the plate. The plate moved over the hot spot which is what caused the string of islands to form (Magma pushed through the plate which is what the islands are made of). When the pacific plate moved, the underlying magma rose, creating the islands.

Mauna Loa

The Mauna Loa is the worlds largest Volcano. It was formed between 1,000 and 1,500 years ago by a large eruption from Mauna Loa's northeast rift zone. A rift zone is when a set of linear cracks develops in a volcanic "edifice" which forms into regions along the vents. Rift zones usually occur in the early stages of volcanos in its weakest areas. Mauna Loa's rift zone caused its shallow magma chamber to collapse beneath its summit, turning it into what it is today.

Lava Fountain: The Volcano Pu'u's upper East Rift Zone depressurized the magma reservoir beneath itself. This caused the Volcanos floor to collapse creating a rubber filled crater over 260 feet deep (thats like 36.6 Shaquille O'neal's stacked on top of each other). This crater now is a lava supply tube for the volcano. This Lava Fountain formed in 1983 and has been active ever since. The lava from this volcano flows all the way to the ocean!!!
