Bernard is ridiculed and alienated by his fellow caste members because he is considered inadequate which makes him self conscious and shameful. Meanwhile, Helmholtz is the epitome of an Alpha, yet he still feels a sense of difference as well as dissatisfaction due to a mental excess. Whether it could be considered positive or negative, any stray from the status quo makes it impossible to be happy in the world state.
