A role model in my life is my mom because she is such a hard worker. She manages to provide for me, take care of me, and still be a great friend to me when I need her most, while being a single parent and having a full time job. By including the fact that you can only influence what’s in children’s minds, he suggests that any other things like earthly possessions or even other people cannot stay forever. I like how he used children in this quote because kid’s minds are constantly developing and thoughts are inevitably changing, but education will always grow and is basically one of the only things that cannot be taken away or changed for the worse. He also implies that education is something that will always be with someone and will always be passed down and prevalent in people’s lives. Overall, Dr. Werner von Braun highlights the theme of education and the impact it has on everyone, but especially children.

I think what Miss Freida Joy Riley is trying to say is that one needs the courage and motivation to take the initiative in doing something. She uses the book to reflect the theme of education, and she essentially reveals the fact that you may have something, but you cannot do anything with it unless you actually take an action. There is significance in having courage because most people simply ignore their opportunities to delve into a situation. I also believe that the book in this quote could symbolize the world in everyone’s lives, and suggests that we must “have the courage” to experience, learn, and, ultimately, take the wheel in living our lives. Overall, this quote could be interpreted in several different ways, but the main message is that we are given an opportunity, and we must gain the courage to take it.

This is mainly because he doesn’t have a strong emotional connection with them, and he also feels he can’t gain that special parent-son bond that most kids his age have. Sonny and Jim, his brother, don’t get along very well because they fight all the time, and when they are not fighting they don’t even acknowledge each other at all, so Sonny would tell people that he “was raised an only child and so was [his] brother” (Hickam 18). He is implying that he had always felt he didn’t have a brother at all because they never even talked to each other. Jim is praised by his parents, but more-so by his father, while Sonny feels like his father hates him, which he thinks is because his father wanted a girl. On the other hand, Sonny’s mother, Elsie, is more sympathetic towards him and cares for him, but still doesn’t express the connection that most mothers have with their son, which is that she mostly lacks the motivation to go out of her way for and to show that she loves Sonny. She displays more of that connection with Quentin, Sonny’s friend. She gives Quentin more food than Sonny, and she even put an extra sandwich in Sonny’s bag and says “You’re a growing boy” (Hickam 79), but Sonny fully knows she did that for Quentin. He thinks “[s]he might as well have written QUENTIN on it in big capital letters” (Hickam 79).
