With the laptop rollout to students, teachers have allowed the computer to be the teacher. The student cannot learn just by being on the computer. We hear many excuses from sub par teachers about motivation and student laziness or unwillingness to do work. The reality of many or most of these situations is that the students are not authentically engaged or challenged in the classroom. Students have evolved. They are now "digital Natives" that require a whole new way of instruction due to the hard-wiring and programming in their brains. We have to get a away from the teacher-centered instruction, rows of desks, paper and pen tasks that do not engage critical thinking. Students are given a choice in the types of products they produce to show their understanding of material taught.
