“Teaching a man to fish” mindset creates independent learners who can use what they know to figure out what they don’t. This is as opposed to creating a dependent relationship between teacher and learner. It’s important for students to practice this. More importantly, it is a form of empowering students to know their knowledge is not limited to what they are “told” by teachers.

The ones that stand out to me are #6 ( students use personalized technology to produce as well as consume). With the laptop rollout to students, teachers have allowed the computer to be the teacher. The student cannot learn just by being on the computer. They need instruction from the teacher too and the teacher can set up a learning path on the computer.

Students should work in collaborative groups engaged in structured academic conversations. The activities should be meaningful and lead to develop critical thinking and problem solving processes. The students should be provided with opportunities to deveolp academic vocabulary and take a leadership role in their own learning. Students should reflect on their learning and how their learning can be enhanced with the collaboration of the teacher.

My key take-away revolve around the idea of student-centered learning environments. Many time we tell teachers that they need to work harder ,when what we actually mean is that they need to work smarter. Working hard doesn't mean taking control of the classroom dialogue. Students should be doing most of the talking, as we all know that research shows that students learn best when they are teaching or talking about content to others. We need to be looking for these types of student conversations on the classroom and celebrate teachers when we see them doing this.

#3 stands out for me. We hear many excuses from sub par teachers about motivation and student laziness or unwillingness to do work. The reality of many or most of these situations is that the students are not authentically engaged or challenged in the classroom. Putting work into planning and really working on creating highly engaging lessons that are meaningful and relevant will get even the most difficult students to be productive.

There is no way that we can continue to teach in the "traditional" methods that were used in classrooms when we were growing up. Students have evolved. They are now "digital Natives" that require a whole new way of instruction due to the hard-wiring and programming in their brains. We have to get a away from the teacher-centered instruction, rows of desks, paper and pen tasks that do not engage critical thinking. We have to evolve our teaching methods and strategies to meet their ever-changing needs or we have failed them.

In reading over the article, I took away that an ideal classroom is one where students have taken leadership and ownership in the learning process. Students are given a choice in the types of products they produce to show their understanding of material taught. Students are also the ones communicating content to each other and setting a positive inclusive environment for each other.
