They didn’t know English well, so they tried their best to speak English to English speakers. The mom would often fumble with her words and apologize. The food culture is different, so when they saw how their neighbors ate, they were confused. The Chinese family made their own food and invited the neighbors over, who had to cope because they didn't know exactly how to use chopsticks or eat Chinese food either.  They both didn’t know each other's food culture and were trying their best.

  My word is mortified, and I think it means very scared. It means very embarrassed and ashamed. The Chinese family was embarrassed because their food culture was different from that of the other family, so they didn’t know how to eat the food properly.  The other family felt the same way when they got invited to the Chinese family’s food.

One time at a restaurant, the waitress didn’t speak English, so we had to show her what we wanted. Since it had been a while since my family and I had been to this place, everything was unfamiliar to me, and almost no one spoke the same language as me, which limited communication. It was the first time back at this sushi restaurant in years. I barely recognised how to use the items, and it was hard to understand. It made me a little confused and frustrated, but I kept trying to specifically use the chopsticks until I got how to use them. I didn’t know which sauce was which, so I tried them all to figure it out. 

The main character's family was invited over to dinner by their neighbors The Gleasons. The table manners in America were much different than the ones in China, where they previously lived. The main character is friends with the neighbors daughter Meg, and this dinner only made their friendship stronger. The main character’s dad got a raise so their family decided to go to a fancy restaurant called “lakeview”. The main character's family hosted a dinner party and invited the Gleasons. After it ended, The main character and Meg went to a dairy queen to get milkshakes, The main character asked if people always slurp when drinking a milkshake which Meg replied “Sure. All Americans slurp.”

A word that I do not know the meaning of is “qipao”. At first I thought it was a type of Chinese food. Qipao is a banner gown or a form fitting one piece dress. Near the beginning of the story, Meg comes to the main character's house and wears one of these chinese dresses, it either being a Cheongsam or a qipao. 

My friends are not used to using chopsticks but they tried using them at my birthday party. One of my friends ended up chasing a grain of rice around his plate until he decided to use a spoon. This is similar to the events on page 5 of All American Slurp that says “and i turned to mister gleason. He was chasing a pea around his plate. Several times he got it to the edge, but then when he tried to pick it up with his chopsticks, it rolled back into the center again.” This part of the story makes the mood of the story funnier.

A word I did not the meaning of was etiquett. I think it means how professional you are when you are working how how nice you eat. After researching what etiquette means I found that it means, the practice of social manners. This word is related to the story because in the story the Lin family goes to a restaurant and not knowing american etiquette the started to slurp their food. During when the were slurping everbody started to stare at them as they slurped and was surprised to see them doing this action.

One time when I was in the the states I had basically lived my whole life in a different country so I wasn’t that used to the way they ate. So one time I was at lunch in a school because I was going to school there for a year and I brought a bowl of ramen and I started to eat it and everybody around me started to laugh and the teachers started to look at me weird so I asked a kid next to me. “ Why are the staring at me like that?” and he responded with,” your not supposed to slurp your food it is bad.” And after he told me that I felt really embarrassed so I just threw my food away and waited for lunch to end. So I can connect to this story because when lin started to notice everybody stare at them she was really embarrassed and she ran to the washroom just like how I just threw my food away. So 

The Lin family was affected from moving to America by having to learn English, not fitting in, and not understanding what people mean sometimes. For example, the girl telling the story and her family impacted the plot by slurping loudly at the Lakeview restaurant. She realized that she was slurping very loudly and that the rest of the restaurant was silent, so she moved the plot by hiding in the bathroom from embarrassment. Another example of how the characters affected the plot is when the Lin family was at the Gleason’s house. They didn’t know it was a buffet and that they were supposed to eat in the living room, so they tried to grab chairs. This impacted the plot by showing that since they are new to America, they didn’t recognize that it was a buffet and misunderstood the situation. The Lin family affected the plot by showing how moving to America affected them and what changes they had to make.

A word I don’t know the meaning of from The All American Slurp is “nursed”. I think it means “messing with” the way they used it in the text. The dictionary definition is to “consume or handle something very slowly, sparingly, or carefully to make it last longer.” The word “nursed” is related to the events taking place in the story because the girl is nursing her potato salad because she is embarrassed about what had happened. Another way “nursed” is related to the events taking place in the story is when they were eating because they are having dinner so the girl is nursing her potatoes while dinner.

I have connected to an incident in “The All-American Slurp” because in the story, the girl and her family were eating celery, and they described it as, “It was more than good; it was delicious. Raw celery has a slight sparkle, a zingy taste you don’t get in cooked celery.” I can connect to this part of the text because I would describe celery the same way. I agree with the girl, because I find celery very delicious and yummy.

How the Lin family got affected was purely on page 2 it shows how the girl's brother was learning how to play baseball. Back where they were, her brother did not know how to play. Therefore this shows how they got affected by moving on page 2 she mentions that her mother was learning english so she can properly talk to the Americans since they moved.

“ Disgrace ourselves” I think it means excusing ourselves from the table. It really means sorry for not using table manners in shame.This can relate because some people get shameful for not using table manners. The way they showed their manners affected the plot when  people saw them.The people that  they were around were in disbelief of the way they acted.

 I can relate to this because since I moved to a new country  it was awkward. At first learning the way things go like bowing to show respect and learning how to thank others and greet people has been challenging  but I got through. I also like how clean it is and how everything works.this place is really fun with exciting things like theme parks and so much more.

Moving is always hard, especially when you move to a whole new country! This is what happened to the Lin family and it was extremely hard for them to adapt to the American lifestyle and standards. For example, during “The All-American Slurp” they mention things that are different in the US than China. Like, boiling vegetables or eating them raw, slurping soup or not , girls wearing skirts or jeans, etc. This story is written by Lensey Namioka.

I did not know the phrase “Pate en croute” . I thought the phrase meant salad because the word “croute" looked like crouton. The word means “paste in crust”. The way this phrase relates to the event taking place in the story is it helped them decide that they were going to order randomly because they couldn’t read the french well. This phrase was on page 3 when they went out to eat as a celebration for the dad’s promotion. 

I can relate to the Lin family because when my family had to move a few years back we were caught completely off guard. I mean, it was a whole new country! There were different sets of etiquette, and rules that we just weren’t used to. A lot like the Lin family we eventually made friends who have lived here for a while and adapted to our surroundings. This is how I can relate to the story “All American Slurp”

  The plot of this story revolves around the Lin family and mainly the Lin family’s daughter and their struggle trying to adapt to American cultural norms. The Lin daughter is a main character or plot point with most of the story revolving around her and affected the plot in many ways. One piece of text evidence to support this is on page four where she is embarrassed by her family and the slurping of their soup as she describes her face feeling burning with embarrassment. Another example of this is at the very start of the story at page one with her family peeling their celery and everyone staring at them too. These pieces of evidence I have cited connect to my point by displaying her being embarrassed about her and her family’s etiquette compared to American etiquette. These are a few examples why the Lin daughter is a very important plot point.

A word I am confused about from this reading selection is etiquette. I think the definition of this word is social normalities of a certain place or rules that are expected to be followed but not enforced. However, my definition is wrong, as it actually means the practice of social manners. This word is related to events in the story like the dinner party at the Gleasons with them peeling the celery and when they tried to sit at the table when they were meant to sit in the living room. The other example of this is at the lake view restaurant when they slurp the soups and everyone looks at them surprised.

I have a strong personal connection to paragraph 4, page 4 for many reasons. For one, It shows them having trouble adapting to western culture similar to how I had trouble adjusting to  other places I’ve moved to. Just like in the book, it also took me a while to adjust to the language and the lifestyle. I can also relate to trying to learn certain etiquette at the dinner table or at restaurants. These are reasons why I can relate to this section of the story.  

  In the story the all americans slurp The plot of the story was about how the Lin family was adapting to American culture. First in the beginning of the story the daughter of the Lin family explains how they just moved to America from China and when they went to a party and weren't used to Americans eating in the living room. Then on page 2 the daughter explains how she had to also adapt her appearance and how she had a dress while all the other girls had jeans. However it also explains how each member of the lin family was adapting to american culture for example on page 2 it explains how the girls parents were learning english. Her father was learning scientifically with the vowels and the different words and past and present and future tenses, her mother was learning English a little differently. She was learning by memorizing polite phrases like “ thank you” or “ your welcome” and when she stepped on someone's foot one time she said “ oh that's  quite alright”  she got so embarrassed she resolved to do better next time.

One word I didn't know from the text was stalk. I think that the meaning is like the bottom part of a tree or plant. When I looked up the real meaning it said that it's the main stem of a plant. The word is used twice in the  beginning of the story; the first time is when the Lin family grab the celery stick from the stalk and ate it. The other time was when the lin family were pulling strings out of the stalk of the cellar stick.

I can relate to page 4, because it explains how the Lin family got embarrassed because they were slurping their soup at the fancy restaurant. I also had an experience similar to this event because when I moved to a southern state. I was used to using a fork  to eat my food but in the south you eat most of your food with your hands. So when I went to a restaurant and ordered a meal I used a fork instead of my hands and the waitress just looked at me and my family. However, after that day I was so embarrassed I didn't go back to that restaurant. So this is why I can relate to how the daughter must have felt when everyone was looking at her at the fancy restaurant. 

I chose the word retreat,I thought the meaning of "retreat" is liking something.

the real meaning of the word "retreat" is an act of moving back.

The first time I came to France I was just like the Lin family ,like having a new life, new culture, new language, new school like it was stressful and I knew nobody.

My word is "suit" it can have two different meanings, clothing or following the same thing somebody is doing, in this case I'm talking about the second definition. I checked, and it seems I was right, to "follow suit" means to conform to another's actions.

For my connection, it's not what you would expect: It's like a video game, you don't understand the mechanics at first when you start playing, but the more you play it, the more you get to know the mechanics and other new techniques! And as someone who loves video games, I see it like this.

The word I didn't understand was "groceries". First I thought it meant some vegetable, but I looked in the dictionnary and it meant the food you buy.

I felt a little bit the same as when I went to Ireland one year.

When I arrived in this country, I was a bit confused with language too. I really liked the book!

The word that I found difficult to understand in the story was "consumption" I had no idea what it meant for example in the line "the lady harpist stopped playing to take a break. And in the silence our family's consumption of soup suddenly seemed loud" then I looked up in the dictionary and it means " the process of consuming"

The story reminded me bit when I came to another country and some of the things were different like the language and food.

Mostly the language was the hardest thing for me apart from that everything was fine and easy not as hard as it was for the Lin family.

And the word I do not uderstand is "squirmed" and the definition is =to make a lot of twisting because you are nervous,uncomfortable,bored

I didn't know what what the word Edge meant. The real meaning is the limit of an object like the edge of the sea. I don’t have any connection with the text. I felt happy for the narrator when her friend Meg told her that “all American slurp” and I think they found confidence because of that sentence.

My world is "onion flake" : I thought it was litle pieces of dried onions and I checked in the dictonary and I was right.

This made me think of a movie I forgot the name but is a movie about a Chinese girl her mom died and every day the mom was making the girl's lunch but the dad needed to make her lunch now but the first time he tried he made rice egg and carrot but he burned the eggs so he tried again and at the end, I dont really remember.

I didn't understand the word "gizzard" but the definition was = a part in the stomach of a bird in which food is broken down into small pieces

It reminded me of when I went to a Chinese restaurant. I wanted to use chopsticks but I din't know how to so I kept using it whith my two hands

How moving to a new country for the Lin family was hard, was because they didn't know much English, they don't know how different it is in America from China, they don't know what's being respectful and what is considererd rude. It's all very weird and confusing for them because, they aren't used to things like these in their home country. For example, when the Lin family visited the Gleasons, Mrs. Gleason then later brought a relish tray over to the Lin's once the Lin family sat down, there was raw celery, radishes, curly carrots, etc, etc, the Lin's were skeptical about eating raw vegetable. That's one example, another is how the Lin family, went into a French restaurant, they didn't exactly know that slurping so loudly, is very rude. Because in China, it's being considered respectful.

My word I've chosen is "etiquette", I remember this word and the meaning, and I thought it meant "^practicing manners" or something but, NO, the meaning from the dictonary says "to practice SOCIAL manners" so I ended up being wrong.

The connection I have with "AAS" (All American Slurps) is that ONE TIME, me, my mom, and my (older) brother went to a restaurant, in a mall, once we got seated and ordered, and got our food and finished it, I still had a bit more of my Jasmine green tea to finish, so I started to go ahead and was finishing my drink, meanwhile my brother was talking about something, then saying something SO funny that I ended up laughing, choking on my drink, then spitting my tea out, SPEWING IT everywhere, (I was wearing white clothes, it didnt stain, thank god for that), so that is the type of connection I have with “AAS”.

Spectacle. I think the word “spectacle” means weird, disaster, wrong, but the word spectacle means “a visually striking performance or display.” This word is related to the event because the Lin family made a striking performance when they were at the Gleasons. This impacts the plot because the charter is worried how the other family will react.

The connection that I have with “All American Slur”  is that going to a new place. The same was for me when I went to the states. I have not been to America for around 6  years so it was different and hard to adapt to the new place. For me it was different because I knew the language and had the accent, not like the Lin family which had to learn as they went on. One of the thing we had in common was how to act, for me it was how should I word things or does this mean something else and other more things.

A word I didn’t know is cheongsam. I don’t know what the word means. I thought it meant like food. It really is a Chinese dress. In the story, it says Meg tries on a dress, which implies she wants to try it on.

The Incident is that the Chinese family doesn’t know how to act in America. A connection I had actually is that I didn’t know how to act in Puerto Rico when my family went there. The words impacted the story by making us visualize the scene taking place as if we could hear and see the Chinese family trying to cope in America.

my life it affected me by teaching me that it’s ok to be in a place that I’m used to.  I have learned

The story is about a Chinese family that goes to an American family’s house for food/dinner. At the start, they feel nervous because the food and table manners are very different, like eating raw celery. The main characters are the narrator, her parents, and Meg Gleason and her parents! In the story, both families make mess-ups and feel weird about how they eat. In the end, they learn to laugh about it and accept each other’s eating habits, which solves the problem!

Another way I have connected is that my stepmom is from Okinawa, and when she cooks, it is not like American food.  In my life, it affected me because it's different for me, and not the food that is normal for me.  I have learned that food is different everywhere, and I like it because it's something new to try, and it’s always good.

A word I do not know the meaning of is the word smugly. I think the word smugly means confidently, proudly, or boldly. The actual definition of the word smugly is “in a smug manner”. Smug means “highly self-satisfied”. The author used the word smugly in the sentence ““I shall have finished my project by Monday,” he would say smugly.” In “The All American Slurp” the word smugly is used to describe the father’s overconfident and satisfied technique for learning English.

An event that I have a connection to is when the Lin family moved to America from China (first page). I used to live in Guam then I moved here. I had to learn table manners and the culture here. I had to learn to adapt like using chopsticks and in some places I had to change into different indoor shoes when I’m inside the building. When I was younger, we were already living here then I moved to Guam. Having experience here made it easier to adapt to the environment. I live here now, knowing the proper culture.

Moving to a new country affects the Lin family because they are from China and they are not used to the US. They also were not used to being inside an American restaurant and their neighbors were very different from them but eventually they were very nice. They helped them learn other things like how to eat and if you can slurp with soup and make them feel put in place. The neighbors told them that you didn’t need to be a different person and told them to do what you want. This helped them with understanding the U.S.A.

A word that I didn’t understand was “zingy taste” . I think that the word means that it had a weird taste. The words actual meaning is a natural flavor. This word is related to the story because when the Lin family eats the raw celery it describes the flavor of eating it. It is also the first time tasting the “american way” for them.

I have connected to this because when I moved to a place I didn’t know for the first time I went to a  bhgrestaurant and my family had no idea what the words meant and I didn’t know how to say any words. But in my neighborhood there was a kid who was here for a long time and he had helped me with pronouncing and saying other words. He moved and I wasn’t able to say any words. Luckily he wrote a note for me to study and use for pronouncing. He made me feel good when I was down and helped me with other things that I couldn't do. In general he made me feel put in the right place and did not let me do what I didn’t want to do.

The Lin family had a hard time moving to a new country because of how the U.S works. Coming from China, they did some research on the U.S. When they first tried raw celery, they liked it and started to enjoy the American food. They had to adjust to how the Americans work and do things, but they kept one tradition. They kept the tradition of slurping when they drink soup. In the article it said, “As any respectable Chinese knows, the correct way to eat your soup is to slurp.”  

The word I didn’t really understand is lavishly. I think it means to “put in a lot”. What it really means is in great amounts or without limit.

It relates to the Lin family taking new food and trying them. The Lin family also figures out about a buffet dinner with their neighbors.

When I first moved to the country I live in, I was surprised by the amount of people there and the train rides felt fun and long. Just like the Lin family I feel like moving and tasting new foods is good because of all the new experiences you get. Then once you settle in you can try lots of new foods and go to different places.  When I first encountered a buffet I was surprised and just went straight towards the french toast and syrup. There were lots of people and I saw some of my new friends there. The mood there was kind of boring and slow. There were also lots of various different foods. 

The word I didn't understand is "lavishly" and the definition is " in sumptuously rich,elaborate or luxurious manner".

The story reminded me of when I went to Canada and things were different.

"mumbled" was a word I didn't know and I think it means to say something a little angrily and/or embarassed quietly, I looked in the dictonary and that's wath I found :

to speak in a low indistinct manner, almost to an unintelligible extent; mutter

The story made me think of the first times we ate in a restaurant in Vietnam, my family and I. the girl gave us an entire bowl of red things and my brother said that it was peppers and my mom that it was chili and my brother again “no, it’s pepper” so I said that i’d taste it but iI was scared of that it can be chili so I just licked it,… and it was ! My mother said “no, really ?” she tasted it and she said “Ho, yes it is” and my brother “no, you’re lying” so he tasted it and said" “no don’t !” it stung me all the meal and after !

I went to another city and the people were all different and I didn't know where to go even if I was still in the same country it was hard. Making friends was not easy, and the teachers were not all friendly. This new city is very dirty compared to the other city. There were a lot of activities and now there's nothing in this city. It is so annoying!!. Now I don't see my other friends anymore. Overall, I connected with the text about moving house.

I went to Algeria and my dad's uncle did't food to the dinner so he went to his garden took one of his sheep and kill it he took the sheep and put it on the table, he said 'you can eat' me I was like 'how can I eat that'. Overall, I connected with the text about feeling embarrassed.

I went in a really fancy restaurant and there were multiple knives, forks and spoons. There were many dishes, appetizer and there was two desserts. It was a family dinner and everyone was eating with their forks and knives and I did not know which forks, knives or spoon to pick so everyone was watching while I was not touching my plate because I did not know what to pick ! My father explained it to me and I finally started eating my first dish, when everyone was done.

Overall, I connected with the text about being embarrassed at a fancy restaurant.
