SECRET SQUIREL - Children to answers on a mini white board, they hold the whiteboard with their answers on in front of their face so only the teacher sees.
Benefits
- Can work with all age groups as long as the difficulty of the questions is adapted
- Children will have more confidence answering knowing that others can not see their answer
- It is an interactive task
Limitations
- You would feel pressured to have to give an answer
- Children may cheat and look at others answers
- Would not allow for in depth answers

HOT SEATING - One child sits at front of class and plays the role of a character they have been learning about e.g Henry VIII and then the other children can ask questions about the character.
Benefits
- Draws upon previous knowledge
- Can be used as a recap to gage how much the children have remembered
- Can introduce props/fancy dress for engagement
Limitations
- The children need to have a good understanding of the topic before you can do this
- Due to the amount of understanding they need may be difficult through foundation phase
- May need prompts from teach to ensure variety of questions asked

Numbered heads together - Put children into groups of 4's and give them numbers, they can then discuss answers as a group and then you can call on answers from the number.
Benefits
- The teacher gets to decide who answer's when
- Ensures everyone answers
and not the same purpose
Limitations
- Discussing answers as a group may not work well with foundation unless group was supervised to allow ideas to be shared
- Although children would be contributing answers when number called they may be relying on the answers given by others and not thinking for themselves

Think, Pair, Share - Group children in two's, allow them time to think about idea themselves and then discuss with partner, they can then share the idea to the class
Benefits
- Child get's to hear someone else's answer as well as own
- May feel more confident in answering as had chance to discuss with partner
Limitations
- One person may not contribute to the discussion

Sharing criteria with learners

Obviously learners need to be familiar with the success criteria if they are to assess accurately, effectively, and helpfully. We now know that if learners are to take responsibility for their own progress, they need to know the criteria by which they are being assessed.

Research in assessment for learning usually shows the most significant gains for the learners with low basic skills. This may be partly because traditionally they have not known explicitly what will make their work good.

Peer marking- Learners mark or comment on others’ work.
Benefits
-Provides children with the opportunity to look closely at other work and see how they can improve on their own work by doing this.
Limitations
-Children may not want to write improvements on the other persons work as they may know its them who did it (worry about what they may think if they haven't done it anonymously)

Exemplars- Assessing examples of a piece of work.
Benefits
-Gives children the opportunity to practice their peer and self assessment skills before they go on and do it for themselves with the other children in the class.
-Takes away the initial pressure of marking their own or someone in their classes work to begin with.
Limitations
-They may rely on the examples too much when it comes to doing their own work.

Post- it Challenge- Groups/ pairs/ individuals write down what they have learnt, how they have learnt it, what they found easy/ difficult, and what they will do next onto a sticky note and share it with the class.
Benefits
- Focuses on thinking about
learning, and encourages learners to think towards their next steps.
Limitations
- Some children may be more shy than others so may not want to share with the class what they have written down on their sticky note.

Success books-
