On my plate, there is a map of Taiwan and on my mug, there are plum blossoms, Taiwan’s national flower. The handle of my mug is inspired by the mugs I see when I go to Taiwan. It has a cylinder for your finger and another curved “c” underneath for your fingers to rest. I chose the colors blue and white because they are the colors of porcelain. Switzerland is known for its cows so I made a cow shaped mug. Also, Switzerland is known for its mountains and grass. I thought it was a good idea to make my plate look like grass. The cow has a cowbell on itself. This is because at my grandparents house there is a Swiss cowbell at the door. That is why I made my mug and plate the way it is.

To symbolize India, I made an Indian textile pattern of fern like leaves. I made these ferns blue on my mug because the center of the Indian flag is a blue wheel and that represents the center of my cultural heritage. I also painted blue stripes on the top and bottom of my mug. The reason I painted these stripes was to make my mug look more like a flag because my inspiration for this mug (my family heritage story) relates to two different countries, India and Pakistan, both of which have stripes going in opposite directions on their country flag.

The color pink represents all the strong women in my family, whereas red and yellow symbolized my great-grandma’s trip from China to the U.S. I made the pattern of a Chinese flag using inlay on both my mug and plate. The only difference between these symbols is that I only included one star, as opposed to five, on my plate. Having only one star represents the transition from living in China to living here and starting a family. Under the stars, I used inlay to make what appears to be an ocean, which also represents my great-grandmother’s journey.

I am from Bolivia and I showed that by using the pattern of the Salar de Uyuni, a salt flat, on my mug and plate. I also showed that by carving two of Bolivia's national flowers. The flowers’s colors were the colors of the Bolivian flag. Moreover, I carved a pattern of simple flowers to show that my family loves nature and being outside which is also why I carved Bolivia’s national plants.

My heritage comes from 2 completely different backgrounds. My mother was a refugee from china, she was dirt poor and was raised to always be the caregiver, and look after her siblings. In my heritage story it talks about her experience with taking care of bunnies, which are represented through the sparks/fluffs of color on engraved in my mug. My mom and part of her family, and my aunt on my dad's side of the family are very interested in gardening. That aspect and culture of my family was shown through out the color choices in my piece, the light greens and yellow represented the beginning and end of my family, hence the beginning and end of a plant. It signifies a circle of life and the unity of my family. The pink accents on it represent the new life in my family, as in flowers and petals of a flower. The construction of my plate and mug handle represent our family crest. The leaf pattern represent the leaves on my family crest, and the gardening aspect as well, so it kind of combines two separate aspects of my heritage combined into one.

I painted the Italian flag on my mug and that represents my grandfather's life in Rome, and all the people that are related to him, such as me and my mother. You can't see it in the photo, but on my plate I have basil, tomatoes, and mozzarella carved into the plate. This represented part of my heritage story because it was hard for my grandfather to get food, let alone any meal in Italy in World War II. This also shows how hard it was to get food back when he was young and I chose those specific foods because dinner for him would be a couple pieces of basil sine food and money was so scarce. This all represents my grandfathers fight for his life in this tough time and how after he struggled and fought he became a professional athlete which tells us that if you put your mind to something you can do anything.
