Book Review- Element 1

The book i read was "The Girl On The Train" by Paula Hawkins. The book has many different genres such as, Thriller, mystery, drama filled, and crime filled. The summary of my book is the main character Rachel travels on a commuter bus to and from london everyday. She goes on the train for work and as it stops and train stops,Rachel likes to people watch the outside people. Rachel has become obsessed with this one certain couple she's named "Jason and Jess" she makes up a little perfect life fantasy for the couple. Everyday the train goes by Rachel watched them and adds to their life story everyday. She pays attention to their neighborhood so much because her ex-husband, Tom lives on that street with his new younger wife, Anna. Tom divorced Rachel for the lack of being able to conceive and her drinking got out of hand. Tom started out just cheating on her, but Rachel soon found out by checking his email and seeing proof. On day as the train goes by Rachel sees Jess kissing an unknown man, she knows it's not Jason. A few days later, Rachel finds out their real names are Megan and Scott, because she sees a picture of Megan in the newspaper, that Megan is missing. rachel has gone back and forth from Megan's street to tell scott she was kissing another man, because she thought her could've taken her. One night Rachel gets so drunk she blackouts and gets hit by a taxi, she doesn't remember any of it. rachel gets questioned by police and continuously lies to them about what really happened, because she knows she could've done something stupid. As Rachel and Scott get to know each other , Rachel tells him about her seeing Megan kiss someone, as they get closer they start to find out who killed Megan. They soon found out that the mystery man making out with Megan was her therapist doctor Kamal. The police call in the therapist and he denies everything they have told the police, they find out Megan's other doctor and question him. Rachel goes into see what he looks like and how he acts around his patients. Rachel soon finds out that he is a good man because he helps her with her drinking problems. Rachel starts to remember the night that she blacked out, she remembers being in the neighborhood that Megan and her ex-husband Tom lives in. Rachel's roommate Cathy tries to help her as much as possible and gets tired of her drinking and kicks her out. On the night she blacked out, she visits her ex-husband Tom and his new wife Anna the night Megan went missing. They told the police that she was trying to get in through the back door and she was holding the baby because she was crying. As the story goes on with trying to find out who killed Megan Rachel finds out that it was Tom. Rachel goes and tells Anna, and Anna doesn't believe her because she wants to believe the best for her husband, until she found Megan's phone in an old bag of Toms. Anna tries to leave with Rachel and Tom attacks Rachel. Rachel soon grabs a corkscrew and shoves it in the back of Tom’s neck as he was attacking her. Anna joined in and finishes the Dirty Work. The police handled the business with Tom and everything was okay at the end of the book. Rachel gets on the train and leaves, her drinking problems done with her depression is conquered and she's tried to start a new life.
Out of 10 stars, i would rank this book a 8. I loved reading this book because it had a lot of details and a great story line. I would most certainly recommend this book to anyone who likes reading about drama and crimes. I really enjoyed reading this book, It starts out confusing but when you're actually get more into the book it gets interesting and things start to come together.

Analysis of book review- Element

The summary i found that most matched mine was from gradesaver. They made their summary as "Rachel lives with her university friend, Cathy, after she broke up with her husband and had nowhere to live. She has no job but hides it from Cathy. Every day, she takes the same morning and evening trains, observing the same suburban houses by the tracks. However, there is one house that she cannot wait to see each day. She names the people in it, Jess and Jason. She loves this house because it reminds her of her past, perfect life, before she and Tom divorced. One day, she sees Jess kissing a man. Rachel is sure it isn't Jason because this man was much taller and had a different body structure. The next day, she hears the news of a woman named Megan Hipwell who went missing. From the address on the newspaper, she knows that Megan is Jess and recalls the moment she saw her kissing the man. Unable to keep it to herself, she tries to get in contact with Jason, or Scott, to tell him what she saw. She also goes to the police station and tells them about what she saw, but they end up refusing her evidence because she was drunk the night that Megan disappeared. Scott answers her email and ask her to call him. He asks her to meet him in person. When they meet, she tells him about what she saw. He asks her if she can identify the man based on a picture and she says yes. When she sees a picture of Kamal Abdic, Megan's therapist, she says he is the man she saw with Megan. Later, Kamal is held as a suspect, but set free because of insufficient evidence. When they checked his house, there was no trace of Megan in Kamal's bedroom. Scott and Rachel still suspect Kamal though and believe he had a sexual motive. On the day Megan went missing, Rachel remembers that she was by where they live, but she doesn't remember what happened because she was heavily drunk. As time passes, she remembers tiny details like falling on the stairs and a red-haired man helping her out. She remembers being in the underpass near the train station and her head and hands bleeding. Rachel decides to go to the therapist, Kamal, to see if he can recover her memory, and to try to find any information that will make him a suspect again. Kamal tells her that memories cannot be recovered; however, a person who has lost a memory can often remember glimpses by going back to the scene where everything happened.
The police release news that Megan is dead and, days later, that she was pregnant. Scott and Rachel continue to meet and even engage in sexual intercourse, which causes them both to feel confused and angry. Scott discovers that Rachel has been lying to him all this time - she wasn't a friend of Megan and she had never gone to her gallery. He also discovers that she has been going to Kamal Abdic and doesn't believe her when she tells him that she was trying to help. Scott drags Rachel along the stairs and she starts to bleed. Then, he locks her in a room, where she sees a framed picture of Scott and Megan shattered. She thinks that Scott murdered Megan and goes straight to the police the next day. Eventually, Rachel recovers her entire memory of Saturday night when she was in the underpass. She remembers Tom hitting her, causing her head injury, and taking Megan away in his car. Rachel decides that she must talk to Anna about this, despite their relationship. Anna, in the meantime, finds a secret mobile phone and discovers that Tom is having an affair with someone, but she thinks it is Rachel. When Rachel tells her about Tom, she believes her. However, just as they are about to head to the police, Tom arrives and locks them in the house. Rachel tells him about what she saw, and he at first denies it but then admits that he was having an affair with Megan. He says he was trying to end it; on Saturday night, she kept calling and threatening him. She said that if he didn't meet her somewhere she would come to his house and tell Anna everything. Tom blames Rachel for being so drunk that day and coming to their house because that upset Anna and she decided to not meet with her friends. Tom says that Megan kept shouting and cursing and he had no choice but to kill her. He buried her in the forest and ran away. The reader sees this scene from Megan's point of view; she says she was just trying to be honest with everyone and take care of her baby. Tom now tries to kill or badly hurt Rachel. In self-defense, she kills him by putting the corkscrew in his throat. Anna calls the ambulance and tells everything to the police, clearing Rachel's name. Rachel also sees her talking to Tom before the ambulance arrives and twisting the corkscrew further into his throat. As the book ends, Rachel decides to get away from that area for a while and reclaim her sobriety and her life."(Grade saver).
As i read this second summary from someone else writing it i discovered a few things i didn't catch while reading. I didn't notice that Rachel actually emailed him first, i thought she just had called scott to tell him what happened. Also i didn't notice that Anna called the police first before she helped Rachel out, i thought she helped her first then called the police. Overall i thought both summaries had great detail and would help someone understand the book.

Universal Theme- Element 3

A major universal theme in "The Girl On The Train" is Betrayal. Betrayal is the act of doing something you shouldn't and lying to your spouse or someone important to you. Betrayal would be a universal theme for this book because everyone betrays someone in this book. Starting out with Tom, he only didn't betray Rachel, he betrayed Anna as well, He cheated on both of them. Tom had said to Anna "Dont expect me to be sane, i can't, not with you . (Hawkins 30), he had told her this when he was still married to Anna. Next with Rachel, she betrayed someone who was always there for her, her roommate, Cathy. Rachel lied to her all the time about drinking and going to work, when cathy just wanted the best for her. Rachel has never been one to trust but Cathy believed in her. After Rachel barfed everywhere, she said "My heartbeat feels as though it is in the base of my throat"(Hawkins 38), she said this as cathy had told her to get her stuff as leave. Megan betrayed her husband, scott. She betrayed him by kissing another man in their own house! Scott had no clue because they had a great life, and seemed to be happy. Megan said in her head "Maybe. Maybe not. You have to take the risk.(Hawkins 78), Megan had said this as she was on the way to her new lovers house for a fun night, She told her husband scott she was going to a friends house for a girls night. Overall every character in this book had betrayed someone in one way or another. With betrayal comes lying.
Another universal theme would be addiction. Again, every character had experienced a ideal of addiction. Rachel has an addiction to alcohol and Megan. She can't help but drink, and make Megan's life a perfect fantasy. Cathy, Rachel roommate is addicted to always moming Rachel and her life. She's been addicted to trying t make Rachel a better person and give up alcohol, which isn't bad. Megan is addicted to men. She even said so herself. "I try to make them feel as though i love them."(Hawkins 132), Megan has never been happy with just one man. Overall these two themes go for every character in this book, good and bad.

Character analysis- Element 4

Rachel Watson, a divorced, single women. Rachel was previously married to Tom, before he cheated on her and then left her with nothing. Rachel has many traits, which some are good and some are bad. Rachel has had a hard life with many obstacles but at the end she ends up with conquering them all. Starting out with her traits, Rachel is very depressed. Depression is the biggest triat for Rachel because it was a leading cause for other traits and some of her actions. Rachel says "I'm not beautiful, and I can't have kids, so what does that make me? Worthless." (Hawkins 119), this quote shows her level of depression she has, and how she thinks so less of herself. Another trait is addiction. Rachel is addicted to having love, and to alcohol. Rachel has been a mess since her divorce with Tom, when she found out she said "I found out that her name was Abba Boyd, and that my husband was in love with her. (Hawkins 45), ever since Rachel said this she's been trying to find love because she thought tom never loved her. All of Rachel's traits define who she is and that's not always bad. Rachel's motivations in the story are very defined. She is motivated to get sober, find happiness and most importantly find out who murder Megan. Rachel said "I've become a sounding board, and I'm glad of it. I'm glad to be of use to him" (Hawkins 101), Rachel said this when scott asked for help, this was the first time Rachel had felt happiness in her life. Rachel got sober at the end of the book, and she found out who killed Megan, tom did. Rachel was motivated from the beginning of the story and it paid off.
Rachel's traits and motivations have helped her overcome a lot of stuff. Rachel has affected the storyline very much. Rachel started this story off by seeing the clothes by the train tracks, and automatically thinking the worse of it. Rachel has affected the story line by Tom meeting Anna, which led to Tom cheating once again and Tom meeting Megan, also she affected the story line by megan Hipwell being murder. The characters affected by Rachel were every single character. Her roommate, Cathy, Megan, Scott, Anna, Anna's baby, evie, Tom, and most importantly herself. Overall Rachel has had her ups and downs and her traits make her who she is today, but also Rachel made the story. She is very determined to find out things and creates the drama and suspense in this book. Rachel has a very big place within the characters lives and the story.
I really liked the Character of Rachel Watson, i think she was very strong but yet very weak in her life. Rachel gave life to the book and without her i think the book would've been boring and not interesting to read. I think i'm similar to Rachel is some ways, but also not in ways. I think i'm similar to her in the ways of how determined Rachael is. I get very determined when i want to find something out, and that's exactly how Rachel was. I also think i'm similar to Rachel in the way she wants to help everyone out. Rachel wants to help scott out in any way she can, and i feel like i'm that way with people i care about. The ways i think im not similar is Rachel's actions she make. I hope i never get so drunk and blackout the way Rachel does. Overall I really like the character of Rachel Watson and i believe Rachel has made the story.
