Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston in 1809. Both of his parents died before he was three years old and Poe was raised by John Allen, with whom he did not have a very strong relationship. Although Poe was very intelligent, lack of financial support kept him from completing college and he joined the army. He began writing poems and eventually left the army. Poe's first few volumes did not get much attention. It wasn't until the 1930's and 40's that his work became known. His short stories and poems were often subjected to criticism and judgement because of his macabre style. However, Poe became very well known and influenced many writers. In 1849, he died a mysterious death, the causes of which are still unknown.

The theme of this poem is loneliness. This poem explains how he felt different growing up because he says "From childhood's hour I have not been as others were" (Poe, 1). He explains how his differences made him feel very alone in life. This poem has no stanzas but it is made of couplets that rhyme. Edgar Allen Poe's parents died when he was very young. His foster parents never had a very strong relationship with him and he often felt different with the children at his school. He could never make close friends because "his passions were different, his feelings were different, even his sorrows were different" (Harmon,1) When his poetry became well known, Poe was often criticized for his horror filled poems and short stories. Basically, all his life he felt different around people, causing a sense of loneliness which was what inspired him to write this poem.

rhyme- In the poem "Alone", by Edgar Allen Poe, he chooses to follow tradition as he uses this common pattern of words. Each corresponding line rhymes and this pattern continues through the entire poem.
"From childhood’s hour I have not been
As others were—I have not seen
As others saw—I could not bring
My passions from a common spring"(Poe, 1)

allusion- In these poems he writes many references to Heaven, he also constantly sees omens and demons.
"And the cloud that took the form/ (When the rest of Heaven was blue)/ Of a demon in my view—" (Poe, 20 )

figurative language- Edgar Allen Poe uses this technique many times. This is a way he can convey a stronger meaning using less literal terms and often using symbolism.
"From the lightning in the sky /As it pass’d me flying by— " (Poe, 17)

mood- He sets the tone of the poem straight away. All his poems usually consists of his real experiences which are mostly dark.
"And fill my heart of hearts, where Death installed you/ In setting my Virginia’s spirit free./ My mother—my own mother, who died early." (Poe, 7)

point of view- This tool in literature is often used by the author. He tells many of his poems in his point if view and also narrates in third person. His poems are usually about his life so this style makes sense.
"My sorrow—I could not awaken / My heart to joy at the same tone— " (Poe, 6)

speaker- In this piece he often "speaks" to the audience. Since many of is poems are based on true events, he offers all of his thoughts, emotions and opinions. This is done in a way that he is almost interacting with the reader.
"Because I feel that, in the Heavens above,/ The angels, whispering to one another. (Poe, 1)

The theme of this poem is love for his mother. It explains how he misses her and wants her to know that he loves her and she was "more than a mother" to him (Poe,6). The poem is made up of quatrains in which every other line rhymes. There is a couplet at the end hat rhymes as well. Edgar Allan Poe's mother died when he was very young. He did not have many memories of her but he had always felt very alone in life and wished she were with him. In the poem he explains how she is "dearer than the mother" that he grew up with and his foster mother could never replace her (Poe, 11). He was always missing a very important part of his life, which was his mother and that is what inspired him to write this poem.
