Towards the beginning of the play, Sheila seems naive and easily contented. Although slightly infantile she is a perfect example of a rich young girl in that generation. Although she has suspicions of Geralds' actions she is 'excited' and puts aside her accusations. But when she is forced to realise, through the inspector, that she is partly responsible for a girls suicide. Her whole persona changes, she becomes less and less subservient. Defying her parents and fiancee. Sheila is what would be called, a 'dynamic character' she goes through important changes. These changes almost represent the fluctuation of society at the time. She knows what's going on better than almost any character, except Mr. Goole. At the beginning of Act 2, she even argues with her mother saying, "You mustn't try and build up a kind of wall between us and that girl. If you do, then the Inspector will just break it down."

CONTEXT LINKS BETWEEN SHEILA AND 1912-

In 1912 there was a strong patriarchal society, in which women are meant to be submissive to the dominance of males. Women such as Mrs Birling play this game and are extremely subservient, relying on the male for all of the money and protection they need. From the first page you realise that although Sheila has grown up in this society she alreafy has a natural rebellious side. She stands up to Mr Birling and Gerals a surprising ammount within even the first couple of pages. Constrastingly, at the same time there was becoming more and more support for womens rights. Most famously the Suffregette movement began its protest around this time and many women of Sheilas' class either led or joined it. So her attitude towards patriarchy is a symbolism for the attitude of some women at the time.
