~Books definition- Basic research is research that seeks to expand our understanding of psychological phenomena even if such knowledge does not lead directly to any practical benefits. (pg #14)
~My definition- Basic research that leads to a better understanding of psychology even if the outcome of our understanding doesn't result directly in any practical benefits.

~ Real world example- "When cell phones were first introduced, cognitive scientists began to worry about whether their use while driving could lead to increased numbers of automobile accidents. The worry was not because drivers would take one hand off the wheel when using the phone, but because of the attention requirements of talking on the phone. These predictions were derived from basic theories on limited attention capacities."
--Citation--Understanding Applied and Basic Research.

~Books definition- Applied research is research intended to find solutions to specific problems. (pg #14)
~ My definition- Applied research is research that is obtained to result in the solutions of specific problems.

~Real world example- "A psychologist might apply research on learning and memory to studying methods of enhancing the educational experiences of children with mental retardation. Still other psychologists work in applied areas of psychology in which they provide services to people or organizations. These include clinical, counseling, school, and industrial/ organizational psychologists. Many of these applied psychologists also conduct research in the areas in which they practice." (found in the book on pg #14)
