At the beginning of the book it talks about how it is being a mixed child in South Africa which was a crime at the time. This was also a crime for a while until the early 2000's. In the middle of the book Trevor talks about how he was never really able to talk to or see his dad due to these laws. Once he was able to see and have a normal conversation with his father Trevor soon realized that he and his dad were somewhat alike.
