As my essay is about the creation of a mythical classical past, and European colonization of the Middle East, I have created this collection to reflect the aspects of European culture that are discussed in the essay. A major flaw of this European imperial culture was the desire to be "worldly" without allowing for non-europeans voices to be heard. This is reflected in the fact that 5 out of 6 of the pieces depict a style or subject matter that is not native to Western Europe. This desire manifested itself in the commodification of non-western European cultures. This is demonstrated by the blue china, the greek statue, and the Evening on the terrace painting. Each of these show the commodification of "foreignness". The inclusion of the Michal and Renata horn stein pavilion is to show that the prestige of the classical world was tied to high society and eduction, another aspect touched upon in my essay. Finally, Yellow street II is included to prompt the visitor to consider the liberal aspect of imperial liberal culture, and how they were at once pushing boundaries of art and culture while also regressing so deeply into racism.
