In present-day 2023, the World Wide Web has 5.3 billion users. This equates to over 65% of the world's population with access to online services. Users are able to upload and share various forms of media such as text, images and video in online settings collectively named “social media”. The role social media has played in society has evolved over the decades. What used to be a tool for people to send and receive messages instantly has now become one of the most prominent medias of journalism. With Generation Z (born within 1996-2010) making up more than half of social media users in 2023, news agencies are essentially forced to ‘migrate’ to social media. This is how they would reach younger audiences, as the demand for ‘traditional’ journalism has decreased. Especially true in the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, the presence of fake news on social media platforms has become increasingly prevalent. Thus, there rises a need for all Internet users to be digitally literate in order to be able to detect false news. Part of being digitally literate itself is being able to discern whether the information being shared is scientifically accurate. It also encompasses the ability to check for accuracy before sharing, i.e. not sharing randomly. The process of becoming digitally literate in the fight against fake news encompasses 4 essential steps: prior discernment, consideration of the source and author, fact-checking, and trusting ones’ instincts.
