I am Disabled

I am part of the disabled community. About 41 million people in the U.S. live with disabilities. That's nearly 13% of our total population. Disabilities can be cognitive, physical, sensory, or mental in nature. I live with both physical and mental disabilities. Individuals with disabilities rely on the world around them to help them live effectively and fully with their limitations. More specific cultures often form to support and represent unique disabilities. Down Syndrome, Autism, and Muscular Dystrophy are all examples of disabilities that have very specific cultures and huge support networks. It is difficult to live with disabilities and be a part of this culture by seemingly random assignment. I am happy that there are others like me in the world, and that there are many people out there who want to offer support and care.

The culture of parenting is very widespread and generalized. Nearly 86% of U.S. women report having children to the Census Bureau. We use large groups and small groups both online and in-person to share our experiences in the joys and trials of raising our children. In my own specific culture of parenting, I rely on other parents in my community and on my own parents for support. We call on each other for parenting tips, babysitting, advice, fun activities, and emotional relief. We also work together to organize and support events in our community and public schools for our children, like fundraisers, carnivals, parades, and holiday celebrations. Parenting is the most rewarding part of my life and the culture that supports my daughter and I is very important to me.

Half of the world is made up of women, and our culture is huge! We connect with one another in our skills, personalities, biology, and passions. It is important to express this part of my identity because women have not historically had voices, choices, or power over their lives. I've lived most of my life with these rights thanks to millions of women who came before me. As recent power struggles in the U.S. aim to dismantle women's rights once again, I want to support myself and others within this culture by participating politically and offering support to the many women in my life.

I am a Medical Assistant with the University of Utah Healthcare network. I've been working with dozens of patients a day for a little over 3 years. I have always had a great passion for helping others, and my initial move to healthcare felt like I had found my special calling. The culture of healthcare is a big part of who I am as a person, my values, and my day-to-day life activities. Healthcare workers are part of a unique community because many of their work experiences are vastly different from other careers. We connect with each other in our duties caring for patients. We also support each other in caring for ourselves. Healthcare careers can be extremely taxing, both physically and emotionally. I enjoy supporting my colleagues and learning about the experiences of other workers around the globe. Most importantly, I find great support for myself within the healthcare culture.

I have spent the past 5 years dedicating myself to the studies of healthcare sciences. I hold two technical degrees, one in phlebotomy and the other in medical assisting. I have also finished this year my Associate of Health Science. I am just beginning my next degree, Associate of Surgical Technologies. I have spent many years pursuing my education, and plan to spend many more continuing my education. The culture of academics is unique because there are no age or gender restrictions, and we find it in any school we attend. Our culture even includes our instructors and advisors as part of our experiences. I have enjoyed learning with other students, and have even had the opportunity of finding work in the same jobs as some of my classmates. Students share their experiences, progress, and struggles with one another. From learning, studying, practicing, and relaxing together, the bonds between students grow strong and can last a lifetime.
