He manages to do this, both through growing up, but also by the help of his friends. Each and every of the Harry Potter books are emphasizing on relationships and how important it is to have friends that can help you, especially when you do not have a family.

The Harry Potter books occur in a fictional wizard world that is somehow in a seperate dimension which only wizards can travel to. I think the setting is under modern time, like the end of the 20th century and is semi-fantasy, for our type of world exists parallell to the wizard world. The protagonist is obviously Harry and you could argue that both Malfoy and Voldemort are antagonists, while the latter is a superior one. The final climax is when Harry confronts Voldemort and kills him. There are many conflicts in this story. One is Harry's destiny to kill the dark lord, while another is how to live without your parents. A third one could be Harry's desire to find a community.
