This theme is shown in The Tempest because in the play we learn that Prospero loves to read, which allows him to gain knowledge. He would not be able to have power and be a good leader if he did not have knowledge or understanding of the world, which he gets from reading and experiences he has had throughout his life.

Perspective + Knowledge Theme

A person cannot have a perspective on the world without first gaining knowledge of how the world works.

This theme is shown throughout the first part of The Tempest because as we know Miranda, Prospero's daughter, has no real understanding of the outside world. Prospero is attempting to keep her safe by doing this, but it in turn causes her to have no perspective on the world and fall in love with the first man she sees that isn't her father. Miranda doesn't know anything about other men and doesn't truly know if Ferdinand is a good man or if she has just never seen any other man so she thinks he is amazing.

The desire to obtain power is not always a positive concept and can often cause individuals to carry out harsh actions that could cause harm to another individual.

Caliban tells Stephano and Trinculo, "thou mayst brain him, Having first seized his books, or with a log Batter his skull" (Shakespeare 3.2.97-99).
