The whole book is from The guy's point of view. This poem shows a little bit of the women's perspectives. Obviously it isn't exact, but similar.

https://www.inprnt.com/gallery/delira/disguise/

This art piece represents to me the many faces we put on to mask our real emotions. In this case, the main character would always have a mask on for long periods of time, pretending to be nice. He would act as if he had sympathy for others by masking his true identity. When the mask would come off, his relationships would end.

Although people have different versions of success, the classic "American Dream" is whats usually sought after. With such an importance on succeeding in the world, people are taught to put themselves first to achieve it. This ultimately encourages narcissistic traits to be normalized and humanistic traits to be known as weak.

I feel like this is a metaphor of how our society is set up. Most of us look after ourselves before everyone else, which is debated today as being good or bad. I'm not really sure what I think yet, but there comes a point when you need to put yourself before someone else if you are being taken advantage of. However only focusing on yourself and your needs causes harm to everyone in your life. I think there is a balance.
