A main pro for having technology in the classroom is that every student can be engaged in another way other than working on a worksheet or talking aloud to the class. Technology is big in our modern lives and with it students may already know how to the tools at home and understand it better in the classroom. It may also help with students that need more help as well. Last year in ED219, we had a child who was autistic and she used her iPad to interact with all of us. It was really neat!

I definitely think technology can be a double-edged sword with teaching, but mostly for older students. with younger kids they don't have a ton of access to things, but I think once phones are present its much harder to make sure kids are present in class (mentally)

For example, Quizlet. Quizlet is an app you can use to help you study and it does almost all the work for you. All you have to do is type in the definitions and then they teach you all of the words in less than an hour. Quizlet is a great tool of technology to use if you have an upcoming quiz or test.

I find that a really convincing pro to using technology in classrooms is for students who may have special needs. This will allow those students to still be engaged with everyone but they may need technology to help them out. For example, my friend is a paraprofessional in a middle school and she works with a student who is non-verbal, so he needs to use an iPad to communicate. From the article, I felt that this best described my reasoning, "From adaptive word processor apps to programs that speak for children who struggle with language"(Ronan, 2017). I am not sure exactly what kind of program her student uses but this is definitely an important factor for using technology in a classroom.

Anyway, my favorite pro of technology in the classroom that Amanda Ronan talked about in this article was how students can go at their own pace. Personally, I have always been one of the last ones to finish my work. It takes me longer than others to comprehend some things we learn in school. If I had more technology than I did when I was in elementary school, things may have been different for me.

It is worthwhile for students to learn how to create portfolios online of their work as well as to learn how to research effectively. It also can be a great tool to have for teachers when there are assessments! From the pros and cons article the author states that "With this information, teachers can easily see how their students are preforming as a whole
class, as a subgroup, and as individuals, and can provide intervention as needed." It is easier to send this information
to heads of departments if the students needs more assistance and it also helps keep track of where they may be at in school.

I think the biggest con to using technology in classrooms is that it can be very distracting. While using technology can be both good and bad, sometimes the use of technology can make students think they have free range to do whatever they want once they are given the chance to go online. A quote from the article that I feel goes along with this is, "the concern that students will be too busy tweeting and Snapchatting to pay attention to the lesson"(Ronan, 2017). I found this quote to be interesting because I agree with it. I am not sure if schools are still doing this, but when I was in school and we were given the opportunity to research and use computers, social media and inappropriate sites were always blocked.

It shows a variety of ways that you can lay it out, and can create more than one for different topics/subtopics. A tool like this might not work for someone who prefers to write things out, or have a hard copy in front of them. One way around that could be that you could print out the outline and fill it in, or print out the map when you've finished.

I might even argue that they are more meaningful because 1) over the Internet people are a lot more confident in their ability to speak on things due to not having to speak out in front of a class and 2) we all have our computers open right now which makes it just that much more convenient to look back to the articles to look for examples. The only change of pace is that we are all technically "talking" all at once so it seems faster.

As I wrote in my assignment, I feel that technology is both a benefit and an obstacle. I think at this point in my life, technology benefits more to learning than it does creating barriers. This is also because there is so much technology out there to help students be successful in school and they are still coming out with more things to help benefit us more. The reason I feel like it is both is because of the pro I used earlier and of the con I used earlier. It is definitely useful when it is being used the right way especially with children with special needs, but it can also be distracting if you are getting sidetracked into something else. It was definitely helpful today to still have class like this and technology is to be thanked for that.

At my school, we didn't use technology all that much unless we were working on papers or projects. Although, just this year they started giving students chromebooks. I don't think that has changed much about the way the school carries out instruction, but I think it's their way of trying to incorporate more technology into the instruction. In one of the readings, and the quote i used in the paper, it mentioned something about how students are so used to being able to get immediate access to answers. I think that at my school that was sort of the opposite. We didn't use technology very often and almost every teacher required phones to be away, so we couldn't just google an answer if we didn't know it, we had to find another way to get it.

As long as the teacher has some education on the technology they are using, then I think they are fine. Of course you want to be well educated in the technology you are using in your classroom because you don't want to slow down the class process. Especially if you are teaching young children because if you give them one second to get out of hand, they will take advantage of it. I also think it could be good for a student's self-esteem to help a teacher with technology. See my gif for further explanation...

the most important Pro about technology in the classroom is that students have endless information at their fingertips. If they don't understand a word or concept, they can quickly look it up. The immediate clarification is what is most helpful to students when learning something new.

A Con with technology in the classroom is that people will take in-person classes more seriously than an online class because we were always taught in classrooms. I feel as though it is easier to get away with putting in minimal effort for an online class compared to a class that you have to show up for.

I think that it will be common for a student to know more about technology than the teachers, but this can benefit everyone in the class! The teacher and other students who don't know either can all learn from the student. As Cristina mentioned, teaching something to the class (even if it's simple) will boost a student's confidence and make them more motivated!
