Input from:
Amanda (AM) - Older Sister
Laura (L) - Younger Sister
Anya (AY)- Cousin

Question 1: What do you think I am strongest at in a work environment?

AM- I see you as someone who approaches problems from an analytical and creative standpoint. Capacity to look at many different options in a problem. Some who can either create or provide solutions for a strategy. A consultant, creative and analytically sound solutions.

L- Creative problem solving

AY-Is this an open-ended question? You are best listening to problems and coming up with creative and realistic strategies to solve them that are both unique and feasible. Really good team player, good at working with other people and have good communication skills.

Question 2: What do you think about the work I have done in the past?

AM- I think that past work and from school strong quantitative, concept grasp, you pick up things quickly. Can do a job quickly after reviewing minimal information/documents. Could be easy for you to get bored if things are too similar because you can amass info faster than people can get it to you. You just get it, read it, understand and implement.

AY- Work has been thought out, detailed, and it is clear that a lot of time and effort is put into work. Can see your heart, concept and ideas in every piece.

L- Usually very impressed with the ability to take stream of consciousness thoughts and make them clear, concise and presentable.

What problem would you call me to help you with?

AM- Difficult because I know I can call you for different kinds of problems. Art, quant, all kinds of things. Would call you if I had an idea for a business, or some strategic plan, and wanted someone to bounce ideas back and forth with. I know you would have different ideas and solutions to something and you’re the first person I want to talk to about it. You would look at it from a lot of angles.

AY- I would call you for, any kind of confidential concern, like if I was worried I killed someone, or I was pregnant. Not only for confidential, also urgent concerns, because I know that you would stay cool, collected, and nonjudgemental, and that you would stay rational and come up with a plan to deal with the situation.

L- Usually call you when I am concerned about health stuff.

Interview with Erika Rief

What aspects of projects am I good at?

Ability to say there are lots of options, narrow them down, and figure out how to implement them. See the fact of what could happen, picture a scenario and outcome. Project how things could go together and work with little information. See in the abstract. Super cool and strong.

I trust that you will get stuff done, on a different timeline than I would, but I know that it is not a problem.

Doodles really help people feel that something happened here, and you have a tangible thing for synthesis.

You can capture the moments. Not everyone does that.

Times when you’ve shown frustration: I feel like this is hidden really well. Unsure whether things were “just an intellectual exercise” or if you were just really struggling. On the Sinkhole project- It felt like you didn’t know what to focus on, but created a humorous outcome to help explain to people how to understand the problem. Tying it all together at the end. You can think super abstractly, but I am unclear about what is going on in your head.

Cultural awareness project- what about it.

Felt some frustration vibes during presentation.

Even in CityLab- None of us were happy, I had no idea the extent of which how your evaluation addressed the pitfalls of the class. You were able to tie in the broader implications and frameworks of life into class critique. So well written, and really well thought out.

Erika’s phone a friend: My problem is that someone at Bloomberg wants me to connect origami to public health. KT would know what to do with that. Anything that is taking something I’ve been given that is abstract and how to explain it.

Another strength- You have a lot of different work experience, and studied biology. You just seem to have a lot of life circumstances that add nuanced perspectives that a lot of people don’t have. Value created from a large range of experiences, and you’re able to give a niche comment that isn’t just bullshit.

I think you have cool assets that are differentiators.

You have big ideas, get pretty excited, entertain any ideas from others. Don’t overrun conversations, let other people talk. Will do whatever people need you to do. Flexible. Will do things last minute really fast if needed.

Really frustrated:

When there are lots of extroverts in the room, will get steamrolled. Get flustered when trying to manage a lot of deadlines and other stuff all at once. Issues with prioritization. Get stuck in research holes, and have trouble getting out. Take in so much information it is hard to start moving forward.

I Would call you if I was in jail, or having a medical emergency, or stuck at a guy’s house and couldn’t get out. Feel like you would barge in and kick down the door without a second thought.

Past projects:

Visual things, transit choices with the map. Need an outlet in projects to visually portray ideas. Neat how transitioned into note and documentation. Have improved at moving from high level ideas and into the concrete. You thrive at taking data from research and put it into ideas.

I honestly felt very flattered by the feedback that I received from everyone. My family members, although aware of the type of work I do in school, could not really speak to any design projects that I have done. Speaking with Erika and Peggy was more helpful, as they had insights into how I do on group assignments. Both of them mentioned that they knew if they asked me to do something, I would do it. I feel like that is one of the things I am most proud of. I always deliver something.
I also gathered that it might be better for me to focus on visual representations of ideas, as that is something that I struggle to communicate, but seem to do well with by drawing.
Peggy, and Amanda, mentioned that I am quantitatively strong, which I was surprised by. Erika and Peggy both mentioned how I can get stuck in the discovery phase of research, and Peggy suggested that I try to seek out the data from information to apply it. I found that very helpful.

Interview with Becca:

Started off in environmental science, during the process of thesis building, topic selection, presentations to potential advisors

Really enjoyed telling a story about the process, and the presentation

Not the smartest person, but one of the first to get an advisor because presentation was great, and the method of storytelling was intuitive. Also, not just slides and text, and slides.

Are your talents utilized at Booz:

6 mos, more utilized than at Maga. Does GFS for people and meetings, illustrations for events.

Things to add or do extra: Expensed political power- went into the negative due to working under a novice boss who didn’t know how to lead or consult. Outed this boss as awful- and lost some political power, was questioned about how bad this boss actually was, until it was proven by other events

Awesome work to cause a huge organizational change with HCD, but very slow, and have to hold hands, and guide others through the process.

Very political- potential stakeholders are very concerned about image in front of leadership

VPS:

I would provide clarity to complex problems through visualization to make important research actionable and applicable to people’s lives.

Review of my VPS:

Product development? Maybe

Good at generating frameworks, and developing processes

Time left in grad school

            Have friends

Keep doing things that make impacts in the community

Molly Reddy Graduate from the Social Design

VPS:

Enthusiasm and optimism, and experience working in bureaucratic and soloed environments, to help build capacity of communities in order to increase human connection

Time left in grad school:

The reality is that this field is growing rapidly, lots of interest but not a lot of funding. Not a lot of orgs doing the work. Don’t look for the perfect job, look for a stepping stone that gets you to your ultimate goal. Not a lot of money in social impact.

Personal networks are number one- everyone in my 12-person cohort had personal connections to their jobs. Meet up groups and other places that you run into people.
