This is prevalent with history that is taught in schools across the nation. Mexican-American children and their families were discriminated against and endured trauma in regards to their educational experiences during the Civil Rights Movement era and years after. "Stolen Education" explains what families in Driscoll, Texas went through after segregation. The district implemented a "cultural deficiency" policy for Mexican Americans because they spoke Spanish. Mexican-American children were in first grade for 3 years classified as: beginners, low, and high. The traumas they went through are not taught about and no accountability is made. Therefore, many Native Americans, Spanish speakers, and more cultures lost their native language. The nation attempts to make up for the wrong the system has caused however, it does not account for the cultures lost. My family only spoke to the children born in the U.S. in English because the school system "felt is best." My oldest cousin did not speak in preschool, so her school explained to my aunt it would be best only to speak one language so she does not fall behind. Impactful to the first generations life because we lost part of their identity. Due to my experience, I was encourage students and their families first language. I explain to parents now that their child will not fall behind, but that the child is simply processing both languages. In my classroom I will make sure my environment is multicultural. This allows for all students to see other cultures, and welcomes students to share their culture. I will prioritize my students identity so they may appreciate it and demonstrate to other how to appreciate and celebrate different cultures.

History buries culture and language in this country. It lacks accountability and penalizes English language errors created by oppressors who established the "correct" ways to speak and write. African Americans built this country on its back, and must conform to the language created by the oppressor. However, African Americans were not allowed books to read and were not given a fair education. The superior language is not white mainstream English. Emergent bilingual speakers are superior. The individuals who can process and switch the way the speak in order to communicate with someone else is superior. To have the brain power a monolingual can not reach is superior. There should be no place a student can not be themselves especially in schools. Students allowed to share their full identity can learn freely and safely. We should not encourage children to hide their language, but rather embrace the differences shared. The book "Where Are You From?" does an excellent job allowing the child to gain self-acceptance and strengthening identity. There are at least 4 emergent bilingual children in my class. They speak their native language at home and learn a second language at school. I explain to parents when they express concern regarding how much their child is speaking. Research shows, emergent bilingual children are able to increase brain power. It is rewarding to see the progress the students are making in the 9 mouths I have worked with them. Furthermore, the student see my efforts to learn their language, so they can feel better safe to use their language in the class. My homework hotline with Denton ISD my experience demonstrated the wonderful young minds processing two or more languages.

There is power in numbers. Community is the backbone to help children grew in learn. Community is apart of peoples identity. Community displays care and aid. It shows children valuable moments. For example, festivals at churches demonstrate unity and fun. Store markets in the community represent where someone can go for trusted products. Every place in a community, every person in a community holds value for one another. The book "Water Protectors" illustrates and explains Native Americans fight for their land. Thee community comes as one in order to avoid the destruction of their land. The database can also be translated and audio recorded to Spanish, French, Arabic, and Mandarin.  My classroom will have access to a multilingual form of reading and audio. Furthermore, I will have an emotional word wall in my classroom for students to learn self-awareness. Translanguaging is an important aspect in my classroom because of the opportunities it allows for my future students to feel. My students will not be subjected to primarily English; they will see their native language in my classroom. Change perspective, open the minds, listen and teach because these minds are eager learners. Who a teacher has in their classroom will be the future. It is importance teachers are able to challenge any negative thoughts children have about one another. As a future ESL educator it will be my duty to make sure my students see themselves through the curriculum I teach. I want my students to engage in their identity and understand differences in others. It is important for me to see openness in my students because it creates a space for compassion, safety, and acceptance.
