As Anne, her sister Margot, and her mother struggled to survive and got transported to different labor camps. Edith (Anne's mother) died from starvation when she stopped eating to give her rations to her daughters. Both sisters became ill and Margot died from falling off her bed and dying from shock because she was so weak and ill. Families were torn apart and people died slow deaths. I know already that Hymn to the fallen was written for a movie called Saving Privet Ryan in which it perfectly fit the atmosphere of the movie. It even took place during world war two, the same time as when this book takes place.
