Comme des Garçons (CDG) is a Japanese fashion label founded in 1969 by visionary designer Rei Kawakubo in Tokyo. The brand’s name translates to “like boys” in French, reflecting Kawakubo’s early focus on challenging traditional ideas of femininity with androgynous, avant-garde designs.

The label gained international recognition in the early 1980s when Kawakubo presented her collections in Paris. At that time, CDG disrupted the fashion industry with its unconventional use of black, asymmetry, distressed fabrics, and oversized silhouettes. This “anti-fashion” approach redefined contemporary style, positioning Comme des Garçons as a pioneer of experimental and conceptual clothing.

Over the decades, CDG expanded into multiple lines, including Comme des Garçons Homme, Comme des Garçons Shirt, and the widely popular Play Comme des Garçons, known for its iconic heart logo designed by artist Filip Pagowski. The brand also has a strong fragrance division, launching groundbreaking scents such as Comme des Garçons Parfum (1994), which became cult favorites for their daring, non-traditional compositions.

Collaborations have also been central to CDG’s influence, partnering with brands like Nike, Converse, Supreme, and Stüssy, merging high fashion with streetwear and sneaker culture.

Today, Comme des Garçons is headquartered in both Tokyo and Paris, with flagship stores in global fashion capitals including Dover Street Market—its concept retail space founded by Kawakubo and her husband, Adrian Joffe.

Kawakubo herself remains an elusive and highly respected figure in fashion. Often described as one of the most influential designers of the 20th and 21st centuries, she has continuously pushed boundaries, blurring the line between art and clothing. Comme des Garçons is not just a brand but a philosophy—challenging norms, redefining beauty, and shaping the future of fashion.
