Josef and Adam

Socially deviant behavior is behavior that goes against what society sees as normal. This can include stealing, violence, destroying things in public, abusing drugs or alcohol, or acting in ways that show no care for others. Some behavior can also be seen as “madness,” like hearing voices, acting without any sense of reality, or switching between extreme emotions. These actions seem frightening or unpredictable to the people around them.

When we talk about morality, it is important to understand the difference between “immoral” and “amoral.” Something immoral is wrong according to moral rules. A person knows what is right and wrong but still chooses to do the wrong thing for example, someone who knows stealing is bad but steals anyway. Amoral means the person does not care about morals at all. They do not think in terms of right or wrong and simply act based on what they want. The simple difference is immoral means breaking morals, amoral means having no morals.

These ideas connect to the concept called the “duality of man.” This means that every human being has two sides a good, civilized side and a darker, more selfish or even evil side. People can be kind and polite, but they can also feel anger, jealousy, or violent impulses. This is a central theme in Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, where Jekyll and Hyde represent two sides of the same person.

A related term is “doppelgänger,” which means a double of a character in literature. A doppelgänger often shows the hidden or opposite side of a person. In Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Mr Hyde is Dr Jekyll’s doppelgänger. Hyde is the physical form of Jekyll’s dark side everything Jekyll wants to hide from society. Together, they show how one person can have two identities, one respectable and one dangerous, and how these sides can come into conflict.

Cihan: Name examples of socially deviant behavior and/or things you would consider as “madness.”

Humans can sometimes act in ways that society thinks are strange or wrong. This is called socially deviant behavior. Examples include talking loudly in a library, wearing very weird and strange clothes. Some people might also call extreme or very unusual behavior "madness", especially when it seems dangerous or strange.

Research the difference between “immoral” and “amoral”. Explain the two.

Immoral is when you nows what is right and wrongs, but still do something wrong. Amoral is on the other hand when you do not think about right or wrong at all, like a small child taking a cookie without understanding it is wrong.

Look up the term “duality of man”. What does it mean? Give an example.

The duality of man means that every person has two sides: a good side and a bad side. A clear example is in the story Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll is kind and helpful, but Mr. Hyde is cruel and violent. This shows how one person can have both good and evil inside them.

Google ‘doppelganger literature’ and read about the term. How does it apply to Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde?

Doppelganger literature is about stories where a character has a double or another version of themselves. In Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are two sides of the same person. This shows the struggle between good and evil inside humans.

When someone is being amoral, they are not concerned with whether something is right or wrong.

The difference between immoral and amoral is that immoral is doing something that is known to be wrong or something that goes against moral standards, where as amoral means that morality is not considered at all.

Duality of man:

"Duality of man" means we humans have opposing sides, typically good and evil existing within us. Tyler is who the Narrator secretly wants to be.

Doppelganger literature:

In Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Mr. Hyde is Dr. Jekylls evil side, in real life. representing unfulfilled desires and so on.
