The Youtube video that I would be using in class is called Growing up Aboriginal: “I’m proud of who I am and where I come from”. Which looks at the life of an Indigenous women and what it is like for her in today’s society. This is a great resource as it looks at the current day and what first nation people feel about how they are treated, and the way life is for them (ABC News 2019). Students can learn and take notes on what makes their life hard and develop an understanding as to why this has happened. It’s important that students understand why life may be hard and what is causing that. As well as looking at their identity and what makes them who they are (ABC news 2019). Looking at these critical things can be important so students can understand the hard time Aboriginal people have been through making this an appropriate resource to use. The theme being looked at is identity and more importantly the identity of Indigenous people in today’s society. The video will show the negative side of their identity through racism and prejudice. By doing so students can see why it is that Indigenous people find themselves on the back foot and have to protect who they are as people (ABC news 2019). The links that this video makes to AITSL standards 1.4 and 2.4, demonstrate how this can be a positive resource to use in class. 1.4 Strategies for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, can be used with this resource as children can get an understanding of identity and cultural background in today’s society as this is done through watching a video to keep the students engaged and hearing from someone who is actually Indigenous (AITSL 2017). Much like 1.4, 2.4 Understand and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to promote reconciliation between Indigenous people and non-Indigenous people, students will understand the way that Indigenous people are treated and why there needs to be a positive change made helping with the promotion of the reconciliation policies between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians (AITSL 2017). Like Madsen et al. (2021) explained we should be acknowledging the violence and abuse instead of pretending that Australia has a clean history when it comes to the way Indigenous people have been treated.

The song was written by Bobby Mcleod called Wayward Dreams (Kooriland4eva 2009). The song is about the freedom that Indigenous people felt before the colonization from white people (Narragunnawali N.D). Which then looks at life after colonization for Indigenous people and non-Indigenous people (Narragunnawali N.D). The song by Bobby Mcleod is a song about resilience and how the times had changed and the impact it had on the first nations people, which is a great resource to dissect for students to develop a stronger understanding (Narragunnawali N.D). The song will engage students to listen into as they are not being spoken to instead have to listen. They will be able to grab key parts of the song and further dive into why and how it has affected first nation people. Allowing students to do this gives them a great chance to improve their understanding. The theme that the song Wayward Dreams meets is country. It is country as looks at the way they lived life on the land before and after settlement which allows students to see how change can impact on not only anyone one but most importantly in this case the Indigenous community. Country is such an important role in Indigenous culture and it’s important that children understand why, and this resource give the ability for that to happen. this resource is able to give a positive link with the AITSL standards 1.4 and 2.4. 1.4 Strategies for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, is all about the strategies of teaching. By using a song, it will have students engaged, being a strategy that gets them responsive on linguistic backgrounds and the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders before and after settlement (AITSL 2017). As for 2.4 Understand and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to promote reconciliation between Indigenous people and non-Indigenous people, students will further understand history and the importance of country for Indigenous people and what was taken away from them with white settlement to understand and respect Indigenous history more (AITSL 2017). That why it is so important that we understand Australian culture and recognise the contribution of Indigenous culture (Madsen et al. 2021).

This is an activity that is perfect for a teacher to see how much of the lesson’s students have been taking in and what they have understood from them. A crossword is a fun activity that all students will engage in as they will see this as a fun activity instead of work (Crackerjack Education 2021). Once having done a week of Indigenous learning such as the end NADIOC week this resource will be a fun way to finish off the week. For those reasons it is a great choice of a resource to use within the classroom. The theme that this resource looks at is the identity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, like what they eat and wear as well as their own language. The reason for looking at this theme is so that students can investigate Indigenous culture and understand their identity and what it is that they do in their life that makes them unique and the people they are. With (Crackerjack education 2021) crossword it allows students to be able to reflect on the theme and gain a more improved knowledge and understanding of Indigenous life. The theme of identity is very important in teaching a student about Indigenous culture as it allows for students to then look else where and into further detail about why some things are the way they are and how past events have affected Indigenous culture. How does this resource links well with the AITSL standards 1.4 and 2.4. Well 1.4 Strategies for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, as the resource will help to solidify the students learning on identity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders identity and what it is that makes them who they are (AITSL 2017). As for 2.4 Understand and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, students will understand and then respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as they have learnt about them and understand what it is that they have gone through and dealt with further improving the reconciliation between Indigenous people and non-Indigenous people (AITSL 2017). Giving great reasoning as to why this would be a useful resource. This well help with the embedding of Indigenous culture and knowledge about Indigenous people’s identity and what makes them who they are (Madsen et al. 2021)

First children will engage in the lesson through the teacher reading them Indigenous picture story books that have a focus on country and place (Laurens lil learners 2022). From there the students will be able to ask questions about what country means and why it is important to Indigenous people. From there it leads us to the use of the resource. The resource is a handout where students will fill in the blanks of where it is they live and what it is they do on the land, after that the students will then draw themselves doing whatever it is they have said they do on the land (Laurens lil learners 2022). The Whole goal of this is to help bring awareness to the meaning of country and belonging so that children can work out what it is that country means to them (Laurens lil learners 2022). The theme that it looked at through the use of this resource is country. The theme of country is looked at by first reading Indigenous story books on country which help develop a student understanding on country and why it is important, so that the children can then relate to country and understand what it means to them. Thanks to these reasons it’s clear to see why this would be a good resource to use within the classroom. This resource links well with the AITSL standards 1.4 and 2.4. The resource links well with 2.4 Understand and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, as it helps children to connect with Indigenous culture while developing an understanding about respect and why country is important. Also learning about the history of Indigenous people helping with the promotion of reconciliation between indigenous and non-Indigenous people (AITSL 2017). Much like 2.4 we see that 1.4 Strategies for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, children should then be able to identify cultural identity through the learnings that have been given to them by the teacher throughout the class (AITSL 2017). Without the use of Indigenous knowledge and resources it would be inappropriate to look at the importance of land but with correct resources it can set children up for a key understanding of country and why it is important (Madsen et al. 2021).
