Stamp Act was the first direct international tax imposed on the colonies by Britain during the George Grenville. Required stamps on all newspapers and legal or commercial documents. Did NOT regulate commerce/trade. After the Seven Year's War Britain turned to the colonies as a source of revenue to get out of war debt. Colonial argued only their own representative assemblies could tax them. They did not have representation during the imposition of the Stamp Act.

Those affected: lawyers, ministers, printers and merchants (men of wealth and influence in Colonial society)

There is a violent spirit of opposition raised on the Continent against the execution of the Stamp Act, the mob in Boston have carried it very high against Mr. Oliver the Secry (a Town born child) for his acceptance of an office in consequence of that act. They have even proceeded to some violence, and burnt him in effigy. (Archibald Hinshelwood, 1765)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Think, oh! think of the endless Miseries you must entail upon yourselves, and your Country, by touching the pestilential Cargoes that have been sent to you. (John Dickinson, Broadside Philadelphia, November 1765)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q.

Immediate crisis ensued, because the Colonists thought only the Colonial governments could impose taxes. Colonists believed that Colonial representation was necessary for Parliament to impose a tax, on America. Colonists held meetings, demonstrations, boycotts, circulars and petitions. The Sons of Liberty are formed. Often colonists turned to violence: Officials were harassed and verbally abused, property was damaged, dummies dressed to resemble stamp agents were hanged or burned during some of the protests.

Repeal: Arguments against the Stamp Act were distributed from assembly to assembly in the form of "circulars". The Stamp Act Congress held a meeting between October 7 and 25, 1765 in New York City. Representatives from 9 of the colonies (Georgia, North Carolina, New Hampshire, and Virginia did not participate). First gathering of elected representatives the American colonies to devise a unified protest against new British taxation. Every colonial legislature except Timothy Ruggles of MA approved the Stamp Act Resolves. Patrick Henry introduced seven resolutions against the Stamp Act in the Virginia House of Burgesses. The Repeal was approved by the House of Commons in February 1766
