In NYS, the state agency would be a good source for participant names/contact information. Local agencies should be able to do this, but I worry about their work loads.

In California, the local agencies would have this information. However, most of our agencies would request permission from the state/FNS to release the contact info. They may be reluctant to share too.

Putting it in the box would allow the survey to reach home delivered participants as well as those who attend in person distributions. If the materials were provided to participating food banks, it would be easy for us to do.

Massachusetts - The local agency (GBFB) could easily pull a list from all sites. We also have clients indicate on their application whether they consent to having their info shared. I think we would have to send info to clients pre-survey so that they are aware it is coming, who it is from, why, etc. I think putting it in the box is a great idea. I think seniors would be skeptical if something came in the mail/someone called them.

Our distribution sites hold the contact information and only a handful are using an electronic system that would make gathering the information easy.

We put surveys in the box once a year and it works fairly well - about a 10% response rate. However, if you put a physical survey that they'll be expected to return, I highly recommend including a prepaid return envelope so they don't have to pay for postage. Alternately having a way for them to opt into the survey included in the box would also be fine.

Local agencies would have more information. Some of this information would be accessible for sites that use electronic client management databases. Some data like income, is not tracked in our files. Additionally, some demographic data, like preferred language, are optional and is not consistently tracked.

I think that most people associate the food with the name of the place where they get it, so I would use the specific agency name "food box" instead of CSFP. I also think that if the survey is in the box with the food, they will know what program you are referring to.

Additional language options. We recently did a survey at our largest TEFAP/CSFP distribution site and learned that only 18% of participants spoke English as their primary language (7% spoke Spanish).

I would have the participants complete the survey while they are waiting to be called to complete the intake process. They could hand the completed survey to the intake specialists.

Advise the participants that their voice matters. Changes can only be made if they speak up. If surveys are completed in person, hand the survey with a food bank pencil and they get to keep it once the survey is completed.

It would be helpful to know if college courses or certificate programs pertaining to government polices or senior hunger are being offered. If interns are looking for volunteer opportunities, they can assist at distributions or use their insight to make suggestions for a smoother process.

Just having the program be more visible would be helpful. When I go to lobbying meetings or do work, having to start from the ground up and explain the program EVERY TIME is exhausting and frustrating.
