Questions:
1. What song do you think is great to work with groups of teenagers, who are between 9th and 11th grade and why?

2. Could we choose any musical genre in English for educational purposes in order to practice the areas of language (listening, reading, etc ...) with elementary school students? Yes/no, why?

Points of view:

Carlos Herrera:

1. I like choosing “More than words” by Extreme, I think it is an excellent song to work with.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acpgignhvxA

2. I recomend you working on any kind of songs in which you can find a nice rythm, but the most important thing is taking into account their English knowledge.

Juan Negrete:

1. A great son I will always recommend is “Lemmon Tree” by The fools garden. Its rythm is great and my students always like it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Td9bTW_2DDY

2. I would say that choosing the music genre is quite importan, since it is going to define the message we want to transmit to our students. I would never teach rap, for exemple. Since its lyrics are difficult to explain and to follow.

Yuliet Jiménez

1. I love working with “To be with you” by Mr. Big. This song is very interesting to work with large groups, since I assign them parts of the song by groups. For example, a group will sing along the first paragragh, another the second one, and the others the chorus.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ua6pCvEu37g

2. I would never recommend working with songs like rap, heavy metal or any other kind of genre in which students may find rude English or bad expressions.

Dubán Idárraga

1. I enjoy working with “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. I consider this one as a “catchy song” for students and teachers themselves.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4lQnwmo2Y4

2. Not every song can be practiced with this kind of students, since they have specific likes and styles. Besides, we must be very careful when choosing not only the songs but any type of material to work with children and adolescents.

Juan Diego Ruiz

1. I always use songs from 80´s and try to choose rock classics or ballads such as music by Deff Leppard, Cinderella, John Bon Jovi and so on. I specially recomend you this song: "Hysteria" by Deff Leppard.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o05Kx5zDiKs

2. It is no good to use any kind of genre to these kind of students, since we are theaching them values, ethics and others in order to grow kind people. The content of some songs or genres leaves much to say about.

What do you think about collaborative tasks for assessing virtual instruction?

Susana Vélez:
- Collaborative tasks are a very good tool to assess students since they allow teachers to save time, and students experience some freedom.

Carlos Peñaloza:
- I do not like to assess so much in this way because I just prefer to observe individual progress (individual tasks)

Ernesto Rodríguez:
- Collaborative tasks are an excellent source of real immersion, then students need to interact each other in order to produce an output, which will be assessed by the teacher.

Luisa García:
- Collaborative tasks are a very nice manner of assessing students because when the groups are very large, carrying out the evaluation process is more easily for teachers.

Sara Jiménez:
- I think they are really necessary; at some point, teachers need to use this kind of help to assess because it makes process to go more easily. However, they cannot be used all the time because assessment goes beyond results.

Juan Felipe García:
- I just consider that when having larges groups, collaborative tasks are ok, but when having small groups, it is better to assess through individual tasks.

How Long do you think should every unit last?

Susana Vélez:
- Basically, it depends on the time the whole course is. Then, there is something important to consider: divide the whole course time into the number of units in order for them to last the same.

Carlos Peñaloza:
- Considering the course is one semester, there have to be two or four units (pair numbers). If two units, every one has to be three months, and if 4, every one has to be two months.

Ernesto Rodríguez:
- Normally, a course is divided into two or more units. Take in mind that all of the units must last the same; there can not be a longer one than the others or vice versa.

Luisa García:
- To say the truth, it is very relative. What I mean is that every unit lasts according to the course characteristics and needs: it might take from weeks, to months. Again, it is pretty relative.

Sara Jiménez:
- In my humble opinion, I can say there is no a rule regarding the time every unit is to last. I think that the same course's nature tells us about timing, best!

Susana Veléz:
I think songs create a positive atmosphere. Learning a foreign language can be stressful for anyone, especially young learners. through simple English songs environment could be more friendly.

Daniel Atehortua:
Singing is an activity that children of all levels can enjoy equally. Students with low English levels will be able to follow along with gestures and dances as they gradually learn the language in the song.

Juan Guillermo Hernandez:
When you teach with songs, you be assured those songs will bounce around your students heads long after the class is over. The same can’t be said for most other teaching tools.

Gabriela Betancur:
Songs are a great way to help anyone learn and remember.

Andrés Loaiza:
Songs are almost always directed to the native-speaking population so they usually contain contemporary vocabulary, idioms and expressions.
