I like the idea of having information all in one place. I tutor at night and so many students say "My teacher didn't give us any notes to refer back to"

I record my lectures while I am doing them so the students can go back and see what we have done. But straight lecturing vocab and sentence structure for them can be a bore. So I do try to have the students lead each other when we do group activity or partner work.

Tucker points out how always using teacher led instruction is not very effective or engaging for most students.

Students learn better when the teacher (sage on the stage) is not doing most of the talking/working and they are making choices about how they learn best.

One model does not fit all-that being said, I agree with the varied activities and the freedom of choice. It is challenging to fit them into the classroom, but these ideas are being adapted to the times so it seems to be working little by little.

Whole group is discussions about the question the answer and the hope that students will dive deeper in discussion with meaningful feedback. Sometimes it's amazing and sometimes it's very guided.

I think whole group discussion is sometimes scarier for students because they're worried about saying the wrong thing. It can be difficult because they need to learn how to respond to each other, but also how to accept that it's okay to be wrong sometimes.

Ping pong analogy is an accurate description. When students don't know what to do or how to respond they just go silent. I like the idea of practicing and showing students what the expectation is and how to do what you are wanting them to do.

In whole group, too many students NEVER say anything.

It can be a bit overwhelming due to too many opinions or not enough. The same students that are more active in class are the ones that will be holding the entire discussion while others will sit there and just look like they are absorbing. It can be very one sided not so much a ping pong.

"The person doing the most talking is the one doing the most thinking" really captured my attention. Whole group tends to be dominated by those more outgoing and confident with their abilities.

I see whole group discussion as working great after a few trial and error sessions. It would take patience to allow a few failures before it catches on and is successful.

Small group student led discussions are less intimidating and more "doable" for students. When teachers provide more personalized opportunities for students to speak and share their thoughts, they are certainly learning more.

I have sometimes underestimated how well the students guide each other in their learning, and giving them the opportunity to shine and be social at the same time is the way to help them learn to the fullest. I like seeing students build on their learning and then get back to me when they are ready to move on instead of me pulling them to the next step.

With what the coach was teaching, I really don't have a question as much as a comment. I like that he used relatable things that his students could understand. I liked the cheeseburger concept.

How would you do this in a math classroom?

I love teaching with choices for art students, but it would not have been easy for me to manage when I was entirely new to teaching. It really has a lot to do with having a notion of the teacher persona as a manager, and not the “sage.”
Being a good manager means listening to your colleagues, and helping them find what they need to creatively solve their tasks. I guess it comes down to recognizing the role we serve, as much as possible :)
