Before Troy’s death Rose’s dream of keeping her family together is deferred by Cory’s dreams of becoming a football player being crushed causing him to leave the family. Then there was Troy’s affair which put the final nail in the coffin for Rose’s dream making it so that she had to defer her dream herself. In the period of time after Rose finds out about the affair leading up to Troy’s death her behavior due to her discarded dream mirrors the image describing a deferred dream as " Maybe it just sags like a heavy load." (Hughs, line 5). Rose’s deferred dream sags her down like a heavy load because it causes her to feel weighed down by the negative emotions her deferred dream causes her to feel every day that she can’t escape. After Rose finds out about the affair she acts cold towards Troy meaning she is deferring her dream herself because Troy is a part of her family and by ignoring him she is ignoring her dream of keeping her family together. In the scenes where Rose's dream is deferred because of Troy's affair we can see that Rose is depressed and is always found crying or sighing sadly around the house. Troy remarks that Rose is always at the church after his affair and we can infer from this that the emotions inflicted by her dream being put off are so burdensome that she spent more time with the church to try to get away from them . It's only after Troy's death that Rose is able to let go of the heavy emotional weight her deferred dream forced her to carry around because she is able to pursue the dream of a new family in the form of raising the daughter that Troy left behind.

Character Motto

In a way Rose is like a foil to her husband Troy because Troy is shown to be stubborn and self-centered, while Rose is the one keeping her family together by working hard to be understanding and patient when dealing with them. This is why I believe that the motto I came up with “For all the stubborn people in the world, someone needs to be brave enough to be patient and understanding enough to keep it running.” suits Rose’s character. When Rose finds out that Troy cheated on her and she’s finally had enough with Troy’s selfishness she tells him ““You always talking about what you give . . . and what you don’t have to give. But you take too. You take and don’t even know nobody’s giving!” ( Wilson, page 98) by saying this she is showing that she values all of emotional labor she has to do by being having to be constantly understanding and patient with her family due Troy's stubbornness that prevents him from contributing any emotional labor at all to his family. Whenever Troy tries to make a decision that might hurt someone’s feelings and Rose is by his side, Rose always does something to either stop Troy from doing it or deescalate the situation if she’s too late. An example of this is when Troy wouldn’t accept the money Lyons owed him because of his pride, so Rose grabbed the money and forced Troy to take it in order to do what was the best for her family. Because Rose constantly has to make up for her husband’s emotional shortcomings, she obviously values traits like patience and understanding that are what have kept her marriage and family afloat for so long.

Character Song

The song “Me and My Husband” by Mitski is written from the perspective of a woman in a marriage that is at the very least unhappy. Both the woman in the song and Rose are stuck in unhappy marriages and decide to stay stuck in them because they’ve invested so much time and energy into their marriages. In the line of the song “So I bet all I have on that furrowed brow” (Mitski, Lines 9 and 10) the furrowed brow of the made up husband in the song implies that the husband is someone who has negative traits because someone furrowing their brow is usually associated with emotions like anger and stoicism that wouldn’t make for appealing traits in a partner. The made up wife in the song is deciding to stick with her husband despite all of his faults, so much as to bet all she has on him, because she has spent so much time with him that she has accepted his negative traits as just another part of her life. The way Rose relates to this is that she found out about Troy’s more negative tries during the middle of their marriage, but decided to stick with him anyway and sacrifice any desire she may have had for a different or better relationship because she had already put so much time into their relationship and she didn’t want to lose what she had put so much time into. By doing this Rose often has to ignore or compensate for Troy’s flaws like how the wife in “Me and My Husband” is implied to also do. Another line that can also be found in the chorus of the song “And at least in this lifetime we’re sticking together”(Mitski, line 12 ) reflects how the wife in the song is giving up all of the possibilities in her lifetime that she could have had if she wasn’t with her husband. She acknowledges that her marriage could be actually wasting her life, but she finds solace in the fact that she is in it together with her husband in this experience and this unhealthy reasoning is part of what keeps her trapped in her marriage. Another line that can also be found in the chorus of the song “And at least in this lifetime we’re sticking together”(Mitski, line 12) reflects how the wife in the song is giving up all of the possibilities in her lifetime that she could have had if she wasn’t with her husband. She acknowledges that her marriage could be actually wasting her life, but she finds solace in the fact that she is in it together with her husband in this experience and this unhealthy reasoning is part of what keeps her trapped in her marriage. Rose realizes that at some point or another both her and Troy have wanted different people and dreams outside of their marriage and she thinks because of this that their marriage is actually stronger because they’re both responsible enough that they won’t break the responsibility they have to each other as partners. Of course this assumption is heartbreakingly proven wrong when Troy cheats on Rose and that’s probably part of why Rose was so shocked at Troy cheating.
