Unfortunatly I had a migraine and was actually sick therefore; I couldnt attend todays session. However, I spent the summer writing a script attached with a character synopsis, props list, music choices, costume ideas and a directors/ note to cast. Today I read the script to my Mum and interviewed her on some questions i had prepared. Overall a target is to knit together the overall plot so the line "you write the ending" has a greater impact on the audience. A strength is that the concept idea is very abstract, well thought out and creative, i just need to create a tighter ending for the overall plot. Which I will gather up more feedback from others such as; my family and create an ending with a partner allowing all there contributions and ideas. I also gave a copy of my script to Leo, who was amazed by the ideas generated, but the structure of the piece needs some improvement.

Strength: I have many fabulous illusions of the scripts visualization and its a very creative and abstract idea. Much time has been put into it.

Target: An overall "ending" will knit the closing line "you write the ending" and make more of an impact on the audience.

How will I improve on the above target?
Collect much more feed back such as; from family, work colleagues, and college classmates as well as work on it with a partner. There is much time yet, and i have faith init. <3

Whilst I was in Scotland for a few days as I got the train up for a University Open Day; I was in contact with Vic. I was extremely apologetic because I felt like I was stringing her along and with my idea, forgetting that it was her piece to. In all honesty I did get a little upset because I felt I had been unfair to Vic. Over messenger I discussed that I was happy to start on a fresh new idea with Vic, which was agreed to however it was later suggested that the idea of splitting of was mentioned by tutor Cat. Instantly I felt as though it was me who made Vic come to the decision that she wanted to work solo because I've been stringing her along, and these feelings spiraled. Ultimately whilst I was not in class it was the perfect time to discuss with tutor Cat, and I needed to stop being immature about how I thought I made Vic feel and get on with it.

On the Tuesday (after the Monday I came back) I decided to approach Vic with the finalized question "so are we defiantly working solo for Directing" it wasn't as though me and Vic have been avoiding each other. Completely the opposite we are together in other group projects, but over messenger we both came to the agreement that working solo would be a good plan. We both made it clear that if the other was unsure or in need of some feedback/ advice we would agree to be there for each other. In fact both of us were extremely mature in the way we came to a decision.

Furthermore, after much deliberation I was happy to either work on a fresh idea with Vic, or if she was happy to I would work solo too. I decided to approach Cat about Directing ensuring I was professional and realistic. After a five minute conversation with Cat I expressed how I was feeling and how that the 2nd Years last year said that its good to begin working as soon as possible easing the load of Work. Cat ensured me that the decision to offer us to be the only pair to split off sepertly was because I had a solid idea and she had faith in Vic's. It wasn't because we didn't work well together because we have proved that we do by being together in other projects. After this discussion I was excited about turning back to my script after working on it for a long time, as well as excited for Vic to create her dream directing piece.

Third Eye Filming

This was filming for the opening scene. I wanted to incorporate some filming, because it wasn't until this year that I had learnt some skills within film acting. My idea of the third eye, is so that if an actor inst working with me personally whilst blocking and setting, they will be filming parts of the process and taking photos as evidence. Last year I was subject to feeling sometimes bored when not creating with the Director. So from last years experience I have created the idea of the third eye. This will not only help with my reflections, but will contribute to the casts 11 week homework task.

Main Points
+ I am so happy with my cast! Its perfect!
+ The Warm up- I identified in previous warm ups I have led, that I was building the fourth wall higher by constantly referring back to my notes. So if leading it all from memory, I can engage with everybody and more likely to gain there respect and attention.
+ By running in a circle it pulls everyone as a team and motivates them, helping to reduce this idea of class and leader. This was my idea in order to lead a different style of warm up.
+ I chose to include some of the music because one it is very spiritual and wakening the consciousness. But also because I wanted to include and relate it to my Directing piece.
+ I wanted to expand and develop the inner child of the actor so that we can become more creative and suggest artistic ideas. This was completed and successful through my idea of Duck Duck Goose.
+ I need to explore the importance of a Cool down by liaising with professionals and other students of the subject.
+ I took some gambles on cast members, and when I felt like I was going for obvious choices I avoided this. Equally I left it up to the Universe and I am so happy with there choices!! Woop Woop.
+ Remember that I am only human myself, so be accepting of others insecurities and mistakes and vice versa. Just like when I made a mistake and didn't actually film some clips, instead take photos. The group were very accepting and optimistic. This is a learning curve for all of us. No one is a perfect actor we must always learn to develop into a better actor than we were yesterday.
+ Apply new techniques that I have made up with confidence to then analyse the success of them for future application of work. Such as 'the third eye' and 'open rehearsals'.

This is fine and perfectly normal. Lets build on your ability to command the audience but this will come with time. There is some great news stories at the minute regarding ways we are destroying our planet. Include these in your 11 week project. If stuck on my news feed I have shared a few links. A greater understanding of how we are destroying the planet will impact your performance so its vital you keep up to date with current news affairs regarding the planet. Overall, good work and helpful when lending me your phone and sending videos quickly. Please do not get distracted by other affairs such as conflicts. Whilst this will help to channel your character do not get distracted. I am here to support you so if you have any queries come tell. Highlight your lines and jot notes that come to mind. You have been open to suggestions and stage directions like sitting in the audience. As well as remained disciplined and professional throughout. Whilst dictating your interest in a mature and disciplined manner. I cant believe you wore that jumper I didn't think you would. My only improvement as its week one would be to not leave your script on the floor! But Ill let you off. Overall some brilliant work so far, you've got a natural talent so lets push it in ways that will be out of your comfort zone.

Jack: Once again some lovely work! As soon as I directed you to relax, instantly it bought a whole other depth to your character. This should represent how when you relax you are able to be the character not become. I was instantly proud of your ability to follow this. I'm happy for your honesty about not choosing the piece. This was simply to subside any conflictions and negative energy within the atmosphere so we can progress forward. Although it may not have been a choice, I hope you do enjoy the piece and I'm looking forward to working with you. No hard feelings. Also, whilst you may be playing similar characters within both pieces, we will work together in order to ensure that you will be out of your depths. This is so not only can you develop your skills but to also achieve our aim on the audience which is to, heavily impact there conflictions between head and heart. Making them feel guilty, frustrated and surprised by some of the language. In addition your ability to support others in the group is a great quality within you. And will see you well within this industry I believe. Even though you were not as involved today, you got involved and I liked this. My only improvement would be, (as its week one,) is to relax within yourself. Which is something I find difficult as I can be quite tense. Don't put the pressure on yourself about learning all these things. I think within this piece you have a decently sized amount that you wont find to difficult. The minute you begin overthinking, as we were saying in the corridoor the other day, is the minute is ripples within your work. Try to let things be as they may, rather than dwell on them. This is easier said than done mind. But you have great tendencies and are quite capable! Keep up the brilliant work

Mae: Mae. Mae. Mae. I wish you would have more confidence! What I may have advised could have been mumbo jumbo to you and perhaps a little patronising. It is just frustrating for me to see you offend yourself on some occassions! I have chosen you for you. Quit with the self hate and begin to be your own best friend. As cringey as it sounds its truth! Why is this important within acting? Relating it to the industry, casting agents are looking for someone with self belief (this is different to arrogance and complacency). This may be a big hurdle for you. I completely understand I was in a similar position. But you need to turn around to the world and say "Fuck it. I'm important because nobody else can be me!" Then you need to quit paying attention to the world. And do what feels right for you! I have faith in you and chose you! So please, believe and have confidence within yourself. There are people who admire you, jealous of you and some may dislike you. But who gives a shit. You may also find that as soon as you paint your lenses with colors, you begin to perceive a more positive head space. You can do it! And you will! Some great work today, once again although not involved in the filming you got involved. If you could send me the video links that be wonderful. I will work with you to develop your character which I think you will work hard on and do it justice! Your biggest target over this process will be your self belief and its some think you should reflect on in your 11 week project. If you could highlight your lines and doodle notes to. Overall some cracking work today. And I chose you along with everyone. SOME EXCELLENT WORK EVERYONE. I have faith in all of you. Ha! You.

Besides you made a good attempt in the physical theatre piece which was just a quick activity piece and a start towards creation. I appreciate that this may be something different to what you usually devote yourself to. But even if you hate it, trying different things will help you to develop and advance as an actor. Have faith as I in you because it will not be the end product. Although this week you were sat down for around 50% of it. I think this was well received I know the last lesson can be a drag. Due to missing last week like everybody I will still follow the rehearsal plan but be more lenient with it. What I ask of you Jack, is your 100% focus, obviously this is hard to do when your not fully happy with something. But at times I felt your mind going elsewhere. This is perfectly normal and when we do some meditation this may become evident to you. Your task is to annotate your script on what we have set so that you don't forget, I know the opening is a bit bitty for you but stick with it. Also next week we are covering your scenes so please come with your concentration and ideas. Research into your chosen animal. Pin things up on padlet or add them to your own project. Like clips, websites you can look at behind the scenes of planet of the apes. Overall though apart from a few things i would like you to rectify which will come with time. You did make a good effort in the physical theatre. You applied confident techniques to your character and was open to some of my wacky ideas. Keep up the work Jack you are very talented! and sorry for wearing your hat :)

@Mae Tattersall Please don't feel bad about not getting something right away. I understand that it was a complicated task. Part of it is my responsibility because I allowed the noisy environment to effect and impact on my concentration. You will get it. So, Monday lunch 12.15 till 12.55 I would like you to meet me in the black space. So that individually I can give you more commitment and time one to one. If you cannot make this time I expect you to find time elsewhere even if it is just 10 minutes. I have full confidence that you will master this, and its not meant to be easy! Its meant to be a learning curve. Also, its okay you forgot your script we are all human so don't worry about it. You didn't really need it anyway. And its nice to see you have been taking it home. However please remember to bring your script this week along with any ideas you have as we are doing yours and jacks scene. You threw yourself into tasks today which made me proud. It took some encouragement for you to do press ups when you were late. Again I understand that we are all human and it is unavoidable sometimes. But we start at 1 for future reference. Re guarding the physical theatre, although the responsibility is on my behalf you did put a barrier up about not being able to do it straight away. Which rippled into your later work within movement and you became more stiff. This is normal when you put strain on your body because of something negative within your mind you become tense. Tension is the enemy within acting in my oppinion because it debilitates your capabilities which you have plenty of. Let me put it like this:

I climbed the 4th biggest mountain in England, I was going to do the first but there were avalanches due to snow. Even on the 4th there was snow up to my waist. My body was quite capable even more so than that of my 34 year old Uncle. But my mind was producing negative thoughts that I couldn't do it. At first I believed them and gave up 1/4 of the way. But when I challenged them I made it to the top, back down again to then climb the next mountain the same day in the pitch black and snow!!
So your body is absolutely capable but you mind puts barriers up. I hope you found this analogy helpful. It is a common presence within all actors. But relying on your self faith is a vital component within any actor. If you watch interviews on the youtube channel GURU you will find many actors talking about this. My task for you and this may feel very silly. Is to find an object in each room that you can become. For example in your living room become a cushion. Stay like this for 2 minutes. This at first can feel like a very very long time. But in this still position monitor your passing thoughts. Anyone with a brain cannot clear there mind. Its the ability to let thoughts pass and go like a swing. So rather than beat yourself up about the thoughts. Acknowledge them and welcome them. Then keep coming back to your object. Do this once in each room. Then video yourself as evidence and add it in your project. Whilst it will feel random, like its not doing anything. In the comfort of your own home it will do many wonders. Its almost a form of meditation. Also, look up Jason Stevenson on You tube he does many wonderful guided meditations. As well as metronome sounds to help you ease into an alpha meditation state and imagination. Simply take the time to do nothing, and be present. Watching your thoughts come and go. I think this will be welcome to not only your acting, but other areas of life like work ect... But remember it is a practice. You cant do it once and then your self developed. No it is a practice. Overall, you showed some attempt to at least try. and when asked you became my third eye. Begin to use your initiative so when you feel you have nothing to do continue to highlight jot notes, film areas or help with suggestions on what we are creating. You could have picked up the star and figured that out. Above all I have faith that you are very willing! But i need to see more willingness to do so! Don't try and please me, instead use your initiative and do it for you! I am so happy with the cast. Good work! I cant wait for next week lol:)

Ben Feedback: Week Two

@Ben Ganley I am extremely proud of you today Ben. Even though you were sat down and not needed for some of the lesson somehow you got yourself involved, obsereved, with suggestions and ideas. This is exactly what I was looking for, if looking for anything. Just the desire to be creative. which all of you are. You got involved in the tasks even when not aplicable. And your script was in hand all the time. You were work ready and eager to get up and devise. I felt the seconed part of the lesson was a major sucess. My aim is to break this fourth wall between director and cast. It was a group effort and everybody contributed some cracking ideas towards the scene. Despite this I feel it still needs developing so don't feel like now we wont go back to it. I would like to play around with space more obviously its difficult when we only have a small corner. Also while you are demonstrating some fabulous vocal techniques such as projection (like when you supportivly went round to hear other members) I thought this was a great technique which is a useful skill. There are some lines that could be more projected on your behalf such as "I regretted those words the first time" because the build up is fabulous, and you say it in a punchy way, just needs to be louder. What was demonstrated in this process was the ability to build on eachothers ideas. If only all projects within this course could be like that. So it becomes less of a talking match and more of a team playing field. The biggest thing that impressed me the most was your eagerness and energy. Obviously I hate to be sat down so it could be that you were a bit bored. But this is all I ask of all of you. Is enthusiasm. My task for you is to begin training different accents. I have found this extremly useful. Before i couldn't do a Scottish accent. But as soon as I knew that I was decent at it I challenged myself to do it as part of a character on stage in front of people. And see if I could rotate between the two. Whilst this may not be relevant to this piece, and the Scottish might not be used at all. Or any accent for that matter. Just by repetition of copying mannerisms on youtube is a great exercise to do when bored. Not only this it will extend your vocabularily. So learning accents is something to add to you imaginary actors profile or cv. This can be any accent. Gareth Jameson has a few youtube tips and trick videos just 3 minutes long in how to master different voices. I don't know if voice coaching is something you have already done? But will defiatly be included by the end of this year if not next year. so get a head start. Thank you for coming and telling me about rehearsals. above all you have been disciplined and understanding. Next week may be a slightly more less active in terms of working with me. But we will revisit your scenes deffinatly. I have some tasks for both you and Kacey to do, and feel free for you both to be my third eye, and help contribute ideas ect... Any evidence you have pin to your 9 week project. If your project is online I would like you to produce a powerpoint (no more than 10 slides) on different apearances of father time. Where does he apear the most? childrens fiction, films the bible? This will help determine you character and then we will challenge it and subside it. Include the stereotypes of him and any imagery you find apprpriate. Overall keep up the good work!

@Kayce Thomas I'm proud of you too today! Just like everybody. What made my day was you completing extra work outside of college. Even watch my video that took like ten minutes to start. And then remembering aspects of it and challenging them and adding your own interpretation. It's clearly evident you have thought a lot about your monologue and are very confident and eager to persist. Such as scheduling rehearsals ect. You threw yourself into the physical theatre. I realise now that in these lessons it's easier to focus on the Acting due to the noisy and cramped surroundings. So deffo we will schedule times for the physical theatre. What and how you are saying it is fine we are about 80% there. I feel like there could be more passion behind it. Again this will come with time. Also your projection needs to be a heck louder. Which again is difficult in class. The biggest thing I want you to work on is engaging your centre. There's a shit tone of shit about this on YouTube. And is very interesting. I just feel like at the moment your leading from your mind. And this needs to change to the core and the centre of your body. Mediation again is a great exercise to become more aware of your body and it's placement. The stereo types of meditation are fiction. Just sitting still and monitoring your thoughts for five minutes is helpful in every aspect of your life. What I need you to do is really become aware of all the things you hate about people and surpressing them as a whole. If you did the last task pin it to padlet and your now 9 week project and persist on being aware of current afairs to our planet. If you are a fan of films. Then watch some natural disaster films. The impossible. Armagedon. Day after tommorow. Into the storm. San andreas. Geostorm. The wicker tree. The lagan queen. Agora. Celestial wives. Wake wood. Peaceful warrior. Samsara. Spring summer fall. Holy mountain. I am. Spirit molecule. Gods pf egypt. Exodus. Clash of titans. Immortals. Wrath of the titans. Troy. Legend of hercules. Prince of egypt. Dogma. Thor. Facing the giants. Viking. Valhalla rising. Outlander. Braveheart. Gladiator. Beowulf and grendel. Vikingdom. Or clips from youtube. Likewise. I'm watching a brilliant tv series called the vikings and I'm obsessed. Even if you just watch be first episode or 15 minutes of one. It is very cultural and historic. I recommend it to everyone. Or Atlantis another tv show. Overall I am so happy of the progress you have made and again your eagerness to push a character. Brilliant work

Why am I doing more video style LOGBOOKS?

+ I had the opportunity to have a whole Unit dedicated to film acting, which I have never really done before, apart from home videos all through growing up and then stealing the camera with my brother to film our own Olympics and News show ect...
+ I want to apply some of the things I was able to learn and develop them within my own content. I understand that the editing is perhaps not my usual effort and they are all very amateur. But the purpose is to explore the techniques required with the overall process of filming.
+ I want to become more confident in front of a camera as it can be a very awkward setting as you cant see your audience etc....
+ The videos are not designed to be of excellent visuals but for me to explore different styles, and what techniques are appropriate to what genre.
+ I have experience and some knowledge of music editing and film editing but have never uploaded or actually filmed myself.
+ I also li talk. A lot. Which is clearly evident and when I have a lot to say I can drive my passion forward.
+ I rather enjoy talking love and then watching it back and seeing my habits or how cringy it is.

This was taken from the much loved programme whose line is it anyway. British & American. The idea behind this was to focus on pairing the two characters together within a close environment so that it defeats the self consiouness when creating. If they feel silly now at the begining of the lesson through close proximity and silly childish action then when it comes to the creation of either scene; they have already combated this. On reflection this did prove a success as it broke the ice. Everybody was willing to exercise close proximity on the other hand the ability to willingly impersonate figures was lost. I think this was because they were focusing on thr overall subjective which was to engage in close proximity.

Here, it is to my depiction that both actors failed to comit 100% focus on the mannerisms of said figure. However this was never the intention. Instead it was to combat any possible awkwardness when working closely together and channel any childish attitudes in a pro creation way. As this is especially important for creating and devising material or creative intention in my opinion. It did just this because the willingness between Jack and Mae to work in especially close proximity was mostly successful.

Rehearsal 4.30pm till 7.15pm 1/2/2018

Steph- 4.30 to 7.15
Ben- 4.30 to 6.05
Cacey- 4.30 to 6.05
Mae- 4.30 to 5.45
Jack- 4.45 to 5.40

In this film I identify my "whiny" voice that could be interpreted as "bossy" or perhaps "intense". I don't think I've received a bad reaction from the cast just as yet; but it's something I am willing to work on as it can be depicted in a negative light. Despite this though I think it demonstrates my enthusiasm for the sport and reflects my proudness from there hardwork. Its close to what I imagined in my head.

After a few attempts at this Samuel Becket inspired mythical knot pathway I ensured the cast that whatever happens or however you feel carry on. If you feel silly your doing it right and expanding your consiouness. So. I decided to turn of the lights to allow for full darkness. From this, it was evident I had the casts full attention and concentration as they continued to follow there pathways from memory as set. It also allowed them the freedom to explore instinctual remedy as they were assured no one was watching because it was dark.

You could only see the outline of there shapes. Again it was an exercise that develops them as actors because they felt safe to explore whatever came naturally as no one could watch. For example Jack took lengthier periods to stand at the front eyeing the audience, his expression was less forced and more comfortable.

As well as Mae discovering more about her charters walk so less about being heavy and shoulders drooping to the floor. But more airy and lifting up to the sky as though she was higher than might. I worked with her in the lesson to work on this because as soon as I said drunk she became the character she was in the pantomime. This is a fear of going with what feels comfortable and isn't my aim of the whole process. Now Mae has found a new way to be possessive of a drunk character without copying the exact mannerisms of another character she played.

I'm not just interested in the end result (which of course I am excited for as I'm rushing straight after to Cardiff on the train on my own for a University audition on my birthday). Anyway, I'm also interested in the process, for me, I don't have one standard method like Stanislavski in order to achieve greater character development in urn resulting in a greater show. But I o repeat some exercises through a more ritualistic approach such as lots of colour and highlighting on scripts, the format of rehearsals ect...

My aim is to push the cast into directions of perhaps un-comfortableness so that they develop as actors and gain experience that will be extremely useful. Because if you can work as closely with another classmate, you can do anything in the future. Also through turning of the lights it spurred Ben on to fiddle with the lighting design, and you can here me say "I haven't a clue about tech". However this is another target of mine, where I am going to volunteer at a local amateur dramatics group and help out in the tech box.

Like I quoted in my pitch "I'm not the one up there performing. Its not my piece its our piece" so I want them to be as much involved as possible. Even though Ben quotes to not know much about working with tech he has more useful knowledge than me and will be handy experience for him to as well as everybody who gets involved. The week after bench marking I am doing a sort of 'team talk' where in this time we will go through the script as a cast and discuss ideas for lighting arrangement because whilst I have some ideas I want there input to.

Researchers demonstrated in three tests how thinking about different types of light influenced a person’s creativity. In one experiment, study participants spent five minutes describing either a bright/ dark location, then drew a picture of an alien from another galaxy. The aliens drawn by people who’d thought about darkness had more imaginative features like X-rays eyes, for instance, or legs connected to heads. This was judged as more creative. I think this was because it is more out of the ordinary therefore; advanced as fantasy not what we know on this planet. All in all it was learnt that dim lighting creates a ‘visual message’ capable of nudging our minds into an exploratory mode.

"Of course, thinking about a dark room is very different from sitting in one." - https://www.fastcodesign.com/3020888/why-creativity-thrives-in-the-dark So, in an experiment, Steidel and Werth arranged a simulated office environment with three different lighting conditions.
Some of the 114 study participants in this test sat at cubicle with a desk light of 500 lux, which is the workplace standard.
Others sat at a spot with a bright light of 1,500 lux, a setting often used by TV studios.
A third group had a dim light of 150 lux, similar to a very cloudy day.

At their stations, study participants worked on four classic insight problems that require some creativity to solve. Solve is a very intriguing term to describe creation, often its depicted as artsy artsy mumbo jumbo **** but in this particular article the verb 'solve' is used. This marries this idea of academia, intelligence and creation as a whole topic effected by light. (The “candle problem,” for instance, asks people to put a candle on a wall using just a box of tacks; the solution requires realizing the box can be tacked to the wall.) People at the dim workspaces solved significantly more problems than those at the bright cubicles. In my opinion this demonstrates the ability to solve problems with a black and white answer, it may require practicality but it does not explore ones conscious creative inset. Also, everybody is different did they get a vast arrange of people? How can you be sure? What it does illustrate is the power of light and perhaps that is an answer to many problems throughout this World. I really do believe light can conjure creativity. Odd isn't it? How can darkness flourish such bright ideas?

Dim lighting creates a “visual message” capable of nudging our minds into an exploratory mode. So that's why you call it mood lighting! Learn something new everyday. You might learn more than one thing in darkness. "The idea is that dark places suggest an uninhibited freedom that loosens our thoughts, and that bright places suggest a compliance that restrains them." Now weirdly, I decided to turn off the lights as it was a spontaneous and instinctual thing to do. It wasn't until after like now where I am sitting reading about the impact of light. This statement contributes towards my overall aim for simply turning of the lights. It could be a potenciaql factor of why so may prisions have white walls, because rather than encouraging the inmates to explore there consiousness creativily, it forces them to think about the crime they have commited in a more narrow filtered consent. This is the torture. Consistent with this theory, the researchers found that study participants who felt self-conscious were immune to the creative charms of dim lights. Which is why both Jack and Mae explored more as they were comfortable in this setting.

While creativity thrived in the dark, careful reasoning flourished in the light.

“A lot of room effects emerge outside of conscious awareness,” Steidel tells Co.Design. "Before you go smashing the nearest lamp in the name of inspiration", consider one final experiment that Steidel and Werth performed. Once again they arranged three lighting conditions:
bright
dim
standard
and gave study participants a creative task. But they also gave them four logic problems that required a great deal of analytical thinking. This time the researchers found that while creativity thrived in the dark, careful reasoning flourished in the light. Wow! This is incredibly interesting! Lets repeat this...

While creativity thrived in the dark, careful reasoning flourished in the light.

See if both me and my brother on rare occasions are working in th living room, we typically argue over the lghts. Ive always been the same and preffered them off. Where as my Brother has always been afraid and liked them on which has continued into him as a 17 year old. Now he has always been the intelligent academic one, studying physicals, chemistry, maths, further maths and an epq in maths. I guess the fact that I love them fully off and he likes them on is a factor towards this fact. My Mum is very much like me and my Brother and Dad are similar too, which means we like our mood lighting and incense sticks and they like bright lights and to keep there shoes on...

In other words, a well-designed workspace must adapt to what you’re working on. Steidel suggests a flexible lighting situation for all the tasks one might perform during the day: dim areas for creative brainstorming sessions and bright ones for administrative chores. “An optimal lighting scheme would provide a setting for all activities in an office,” she says. After all, great ideas might arrive in the darkness, but a lot of other work is needed to help them see the light of day.

Now I turned of the lights because I thought it was a cool idea, to see if they were really focussed and committed and to add another medium to the overall process of creating physical theatre inspired by Samuel Beckett. It wasn't until now that I understand the benefits of this and in fact there are more then I thought there would be. I cannot see one negative argument for such a simple task as flicking a switch. I shall bear in mind the impact of light from now on and also include it within the tech aspect of the overall performance.

This is my design and I acknowledge it needs tweeking. To make it less black swan I am going to remove the "wings" on each side of the eye and replace it with more bruises and more black toning. My cast member doesn't have a beared so the black tear lines with roll all the way down his neck. As well as the white face and contour. I am going to add extra tear marks.

Originally inspired by the design of Artaud with the white face and red lips. The white face paint and the black tear marks represent the traditiona clown through theatre with early references to the mimi, obviously though this is more a gothic interpretation. I decided to use these as inspiration because Adam is the representation of man within our modern society and I wanted to liken man to being a clown. Or a fool. With regards to my first early draft of the script I likened towards how masks are a huge feature within our history such as in Greek theatre to the World War where people would wear gas masks. I also made remarks towards the fact that now through social media, everyone is just presenting a facade or an illusion of the lives. Which isn't realistic in my opinion.

The black tear lines were originally inspired by the character of Floki in the much loved series 'The Vikings'.
The real Floki was named Hrafna-Flóki Vilgerðarson, and is believed to have been born in 830 as the son of Glamur and Vilgerd Hörða-Káradóttir, and later died in Iceland in the 9th century.

The first major difference between Floki in history and his Vikings counterpart is his marriage. We know as fans that Floki was madly in love with Helga and that the two of them were basically soul mates. His wife was actually named Gro and he had two children, all of who accompanied him when he went to explore, eventually finding Iceland. Both Floki’s endured massive loss because the real Floki lost both of his children to drowning, echoing a similar loss of life on the show, though by different means. Floki’s timeline doesn’t coincide with any of the other major characters on Vikings, making it very unlikely that he would have crossed paths with Lagertha, Rollo, Bjorn, or Ivar, all of whom he had a deep impact on in the show’s timeline.

Another major difference would be Floki’s rivalry and immense hatred for Ragnar’s friend Athelstan a Christian that Ragnar befriended at Linders Farm and learnt alot from him. The real Floki was known as “Raven-Floki” because he took three ravens with him to help him find Iceland. The first raven flew for a while before returning, so he knew it had not found land. The second one flew above the boat before landing again. The third raven flew away and never returned, so that was the raven that he followed, knowing that it had found land. When he found it, he hiked to the very top of a mountain, where all he could see was ice, as it was winter. Therefore he named it Iceland.

Floki has always been open and honest about his view that Christianity will be the death of their ways and he is adamant in his belief that Athelstan was a direct cause of this death because he influenced Ragnar so much in his thinking of new ways. None of this is new, this is all part of Floki’s character, his belief system that he is so immersed in. Over the years however, we have seen Floki progress further and further into some deeper belief in his Gods.Although I think it was just out of pure jealousy from Floki. Adam has medieval views about topics such as Christianity and his son Judas being remarked to as gay. There is a line within the script,
E:"Wouldnt you want our soon to experience love no matter what form?"
A:"My son aint gay. Its not Adam and Eve and there fluffy cat named tickles.
E:"Give me one reason why!"
A:"Its not Christian."
E:"You aint Christian?"
A:"Yeah but I got a mate called Christian"
I think this represents the nonconformist egotistic views without actually displaying these views that could be offensive.

Floki’s extreme views became far more apparent and he was vocal in his hatred of Athelstan, whom he felt was responsible for everything wrong in their lives. His behaviors became more erratic as he sought his own guidance from his Gods. It was during this time as well that he became less able to control his emotional outbursts with even Helga, the one person who loved him without question. He turned on her in violence, then quickly realized the wrongness of his behavior and swore to her that he was sorry and it would never happen again.

Overall Floki is a disillusion visualizist, a bit of a maverick and extremely eccentric particularly in the early seasons. I am conflicted with Floki's character because his views are not open minded which suggests an inability or stubbornness to learn, he killed Athelstan, and didn't give him and Helga another child resulting in her death. But at the same time, audiences seem to love him including myself as he warms with his quirky and gestural facial expressions/ posture. I think because of this Floki could be the shadow of a human being because I don't believe you can like nor dislike any person. It is very difficult to categorize people into right wing and left wing unless in extreme circumstances in my opinion.

Furthermore I did not want my representation of man to be in either category, but for the audience to decide because who am I to say? Adam and Eves relationship is conflicted because on the one hand they share small bursts of passion but on the other hand Adam often beats Eve and Eve has had an affair with his brother Technology. Therefore I marry the two characters together because I cannot place Floki in a label that makes him either good or bad.

Likewise Adam treats Eve poorly but stays home most night to look after his children. On this basis I came up with the idea of within anything I direct including this I will place hospital bracelets on there ankles with there character names written on them. This is because a character maybe based on true events or a real person or may be fiction, but the only person you can truly accurately represent is yourself. Also we have different minds in the same world, and interpret the same world, differently so every person in the audience with perceive characters differently. Therefore it is my justification that no character can truly represent they are a filter, label or illusion of what could be.

Floki is the son of Loki and is extremely mischievous like when in the first series he pulled the cross necklace of a Christian man, which caused the Vikings to fight all the British men who were making piece. Whilst initially I haven't based the character of Adam directly on Floki, I have taken inspiration from his makeup and above is my justification for this.

Although it is not evident in the images, it has inspired me to add some tear drops and obviously there will be no beard. So it will be tweaked slightly based on face shape and features ect... The most commonly recognized of all prison tattoos is the teardrop and is sported by rappers, celebrities as well as "hot felon" Jeremy Meeks and many prisoners ect.... Most people believe that a teardrop indicates that the person has committed a murder but it can have a number of meanings depending on location. In some places a teardrop means murder, while in others it can represent a long prison stretch or even that your friend was murdered and you intend to seek revenge. If you ever spot someone with just a the outline of a teardrop - that means they have committed attempted murder.

Made famous by Johnny Depp's character in the movie Crybaby. It is a tattoo of a teardrop below one's eye on either side. Originally placed in prison to signify that the bearer was owned by a fellow prisoner. In prison terms "there bitch." The tear drop signifies that pain and humiliation one would feel after being "turned out" in prison. The tattoo is placed on the face to further humiliate the victim and mark them in a place where they could not cover the mark.

Confusion about it's meaning has come from the victim's having to explain the tattoo when they get out of prison and have to explain it to family and loved one's. They would often state that they got the tattoo because they killed a man in prison. This statement was not far from the truth since their submissive act of becoming another man's "bitch" could easily be viewed as the death of their manhood. Problems arose when men on the outside began to get the tattoos and brag that it signified their killing someone or lost a loved one. Unwittingly they had marked themselves as a target for predators if they ever went to prison.

This tattoo is mostly associated with prisoners, convicts, gangsters, thugs, suffering, or the loss of a loved one. But for every individual, a teardrop tattoo may mean something else. Sometimes, this may symbolize the membership of a gang. When associated with being in prison, these tattoos signify the number of killings the wearer has in his criminal record. It is a tattoo that is also inked for every five years of hard suffering time a person has served in prison.

These tattoos may also indicate that a person has murdered someone in his/her life inside or outside the prison. Although these may have multiple meanings, most of the tattoos of this depiction seen in mainstream culture today imply that the wearer has killed someone.

I did decide to add teardrops because the very fact it has many many meanings reflects that of Adam who represents man but isn't defined as anything in particular. Adam is showcased as a thug or 'gadje' but this is conflicted as he is the heart of his kids and he wasn't the one who ate the apple.

Now. There are many things wrong with this. One this is the design for Mae. Mae does not have a beard. Mae is also a lot paler so even though I bought a dark and tanned foundation (50p from pound land) it blends in on Jake's skin because he is olive tanned. Also the foundation and contouring will stretch down up until the jaw line, leaving her neck her natural pigmentation. It does look very man in drag or pantomime and possibly even Egyptian, but when this is mirrored on a female face it will look as imagined. The idea behind this is to make up an exaggerated version of the current makeup trends. Of course it had to be exaggerated also because on stage it will look smaller. It was evident as we stepped further away from the mirror that on stage with the lights it will look more effective. The contrasting colors such as the bright pink eye shadow, and orange/ red lipstick are made to look like the stereotypical version of a 'chavette'. Also I have made it somewhat childlike to mirror the playfulness within Eve. I am going to use some huge fake eyelashes to exaggerate the chavette.

I identified how Kayce has a lack of self confidence which obviously richerche's into her work. This was discovered after her outburst on Thursday in a rehearsal after college hours. I go into more detail in a video about how I reacted to this. Since then I have asked random strangers as well as professionals, amateurs and people I know the same question "What gives you confidence?". As a method to understand how confidence influences this particular craft and generally out of pure curiosity. Its also showcases the faith in confidence as I was able to approach random people and ask them a personal question. Ultimately this was a fascinating experience as not only did I gain knowledge about other people verbally but I observed there body language too. As well as this it has inspired me in many other ways such as in my personal life and in other modules.

I've never have understood any of the tech lingo besides black out, general wash and basics like follow spots, spot lights and of course disco lighting. So it was really interesting to discover how a tech script is actually produced. As to why tech rehearsals take so long due to the fact that there is very limited tech description within the actual script. Instead it is all discussed with the director and technician in verbal form which now makes sense because its a very visual aspect of the overall performance. This was the most enlightening fact that I learned wit three other groups and Ollie the technician.

How Rude...

What was difficult was when during a focus activity I was leading I got rudely interrupted by a student in the same class. I found this highly pathetic and out of her place, it was as tough she was something higher when in actual fact we are all equals. The exercises I was leading was a meditation session that turned into a huge chaotic playground. Students were not taking it seriously by being extremely childish, talking, laughing and being damn right rude. After this I decided to then forego a focus game that was inspired by the much loved game "Guess Who?" instead a life like version. During this the students were extremely rude once again and I could only count ten who were actually professional. Despite my efforts to 'control' levels of this childish behaviour it is really up to the individual to be disciplined and professional. This was when once particular student broke the game and shouted out "Right. Im not being funny but can we just crack on with directing. this is just stupid and a waste of time. I would rather be doing what I want not this.".

In responce to this I was extremely shpocked byut ionstantly I adopted a teachers head almost where I replied calmly, professionally and firm "This is my time to undertake a focus game. If you feel you do not want to partake, this is fine and the tutors will make sure the the time is split equally. Now can I continue." I surprised myself by how calm and professional I remained because there could have been an argument and maybe this was the intention. After this I approached the tutor and polished as he replied "Its alright Steph,. Its not your fault,. Some students are being rude." I simply smiled and walked away to then teach a session with my cast for Directing.

I learnt from this experience that maybe meditation wasnt the apropriate exercise to forgo I was just so bored of doing the sam,e activities which I feel after a while dont assist in focusing. At the same time though perhaps it was a little selfish of me to forego an activity that I enjoy because what made me think that certain students would be endure this. It is to my belief that it was a little selfish and naive to think that this pould be successful. However I would have never of known.

In addition I also learnt that there will always be some sort of conflict but its the way in which you respond that makes the impact. When M was rude I responded professionally and simply noted that I would meditate on her later. This was a very zen orientated mature response and I'm glad I didn't make an argument out of something so small. I simply meditate on it.

Always pause — When a conflict arises, avoid lashing out. Take a moment to breathe slowly and notice the air coming into and going out of your lungs and belly. Allow the simple act of focusing on your breath to ground you in the present moment.

Allow yourself to feel what you’re feeling — Pay attention to your thoughts and emotions. Is your mind racing with angry thoughts? Do you feel hurt or embarrassed? Just notice these. Thoughts and emotions are natural. They will settle if you don’t react to them.

Do a brief body scan— Notice the physical sensations that arise with your thoughts and emotions. Are you clenching your jaw? Are you tightening your fists, ready to hit something? Are your leg muscles twitching, urging you to flee? Notice any muscle tension from your toes to the top of your head.

Settle into your breath — As you breathe, you will notice a pause at the end of each out breath before you breathe in again. During this pause, relax, and soften your muscles. Keep doing this for a few minutes, relaxing deeper and deeper into each pause.

Acknowledge that you have space to choose — Accept that you are upset and don’t fight it. You could even say aloud, “I am upset.” Choose to be patient with yourself. If, however, your emotions feel too strong to investigate, acknowledge your difficulty and move away from the troubling situation. You can choose to return to the issue when you are calmer.

Challenge your assumptions — Be open-minded to the views of others involved in the conflict. Don’t assume you know where people’s ideas come from or how other people are feeling. Challenge yourself to ask open-ended questions so that you can truly understand their perspective.

Avoid negative speech — Name-calling is never helpful. Instead, explain your point of view clearly and acknowledge the viewpoints of others.

Suggest a resolution — Stick to the point of the conflict and suggest one or more ways to resolve it. Calmly discuss the pros and cons of each suggestion.

Move forward — Agree to try a resolution without resentment. And when you move forward with a suggestion, give it your full effort.

Forgive —Holding onto anger and resentment only hurts us and burdens relationships. Forgive yourself and others for being different and having an argument, and accept the idea that by learning to resolve conflict, we grow as people.
