"I went to the chalkboard and drew a circle with a diagonal line bisecting it. 'What does this mean?'

'Not allowed?'

'Right.' Next I pointed to the words NOT ALLOWED on the chalkboard. 'And so does this. But only one is a representation of speech.'" - (Chiang 108)

This quotation showcases how the communication of the Heptapods are divided between their written and verbal language (Heptapod A and Heptapod B). It also demonstrates that their form of communication is linked with time in the sense that they know their full sentences beforehand. What is interesting about the way the Heptapods communicate is that they experience events all at once instead of going with the flow, something that leads them to know their future before it has even happened. Furthermore, this quotation and everything Dr. Louise Banks discovers teach readers that the Heptapod's form of communication links them to their past, present, and future all at once.

"She caught a bit of their signed conversation. Their hands spoke of the cutting, about mouth-speech. To her left, two young mothers with small children strapped to their chests were also signing about the implanted children and the encroachment of the mouth-speaking Federation." (McDonnel 202)

This quotation showcases the manner in which Mist's people communicate with each other. Due to her people's inability to hear, they find it very odd when speaking humans start a trend that convinces Mist's people to participate and go through a surgery that allows them to hear. In doing so, they go against the beliefs and traditions most of Mist's people follow and cause a commotion and divide between the colonized people. What is most interesting about the way the characters in Lingua Franca communicate is the very fact that the colonized people have put value in their sign language, something that Mist believes in intensely, and what makes her disappointed when her people choose to do the surgery, rejecting their form of communication- this especially applies to her daughter who wanted the implants.

The speaking humans pose a threat to Mist and her people who believe that the implant surgery is bringing change to their community, something that they are completely against because their form of communication has been used for all their lives and for past generations as a form of connection. They believe that changing their form of communication is offensive and goes against their tradition and customs.

The form of communication that the Heptapods introduce to the humans, something that Dr. Louise Banks focuses on to decode, grants her the ability to not only remember her past and live in the present, but also experience the future. The way the Heptapods communicate with one another ensures that those who can understand their form of communication teaches them to experience events all at once rather than simply going with the flow.

The moment that Dr. Louise Banks decodes the form of communication that the Heptapods utilize, she gains the ability to experience everything all at once and, therefore, know everything that will happen to her daughter all the way to the moment that her daughter dies. In doing so, she questions free will, which makes readers question if fate is also another dictator of the way someone's life goes. It seems as if the Heptapod's form of communication is what already dictates and sets in stone the path for a person's life, inevitably linking their past, present, and future into one.
