This quotation showcases how the communication of the Heptapods are divided between their written and verbal language (Heptapod A and Heptapod B). It also demonstrates that their form of communication is linked with time in the sense that they know their full sentences beforehand. What is interesting about the way the Heptapods communicate is that they experience events all at once instead of going with the flow, something that leads them to know their future before it has even happened. Furthermore, this quotation and everything Dr. Louise Banks discovers teach readers that the Heptapod's form of communication links them to their past, present, and future all at once.

This quotation showcases the manner in which Mist's people communicate with each other. Due to her people's inability to hear, they find it very odd when speaking humans start a trend that convinces Mist's people to participate and go through a surgery that allows them to hear. In doing so, they go against the beliefs and traditions most of Mist's people follow and cause a commotion and divide between the colonized people.
