My dear friend Rachel,

I am so happy that I was able to spend some time with you in DC this past Spring. Being with you has always been a joy because of your positive spirit, your cheerful disposition, and your beautiful soul. I admire your ability to see so much beauty in life even with all its challenges. It is amazing how much you are able to see the good in everyone and every situation. It really comes through in conversations with you, in hearing you talk about Seth and Chelsea, and even seeing your posts about everyday life on Facebook.

I cherish the time we spent together as neighbors, classmates, and friends. I want to let you know how much you are loved and appreciated and that you bring me and so many others so much joy just by being you. I love you, sweet friend!

We never met during high school days but I had the privilege to do so last spring when she visited DC. It was a brief encounter, we were sitting across each other on that restaurant table having brunch, sharing stories. I would have never guessed she was sick if not of my prior knowledge of this. She was cheerful, happy, and positive. I admired her strength and tenacity to go through pain with such grace and determination. I will look back on that encounter with fondness and use her spunk to remind me of how strong the human spirit could be in times of life’s challenges. She was indeed beautiful. I am grateful to have met Rachel and may she live on in the hearts of everyone she has touched deeply. My sincere condolences.

Dearest Rachel,

I struggle writing this as I can't believe you are gone. You are one of the most beautiful and positive energy that I had ever met. You may not have known it, but you helped me (and continue to help me) support a loved one going through a health challenge. You were so selfless and kind in sharing your experience and tips on how you stayed grounded. I will always have fond memories of the Tahoe and DC reunion trips as they gave me an opportunity to get to know you more after high school. I found out that you love art as much, or maybe more, than I do and always seem to see the beauty in everything. You have two great kids who inherited your love for the arts. I wouldn't be surprised if I hear of their success in this field in the future. I will think of you then as I think of you now, and be reminded that we can have a positive impact in this world no matter how small. Because you have shown us just that. You will be sorely missed. Make us the best rainbows from heaven!
