In the beginning of the book Stella doesn't know how to deal with the problem regarding the kkk her mom state's "Last time the Klan was active was when Billy Odom had what they called the "'accident"' (Draper 7) Stella quickly remembers this and mentions she was only a child at the time. So Stella's knowledge of the klan is small and being only 12 she is barely figuring out the world. And because she had been the one to witness the Klan she suddenly feels the pressure to give the towns folk answers.

Even though the klan is striking some of the towns folk Stella learns to be brave. She puts on a brave face through the racism. She develops character and over comes small fears that started to seem small compared to the now bigger problem rasim. She also learns to write with the bottled up emotions and feeling that she had wanted to write about the klan.

Racism in the Book

In the book it takes more of a everything turns out find in the end scenario thing but it still puts some serious realistic events in the book. In the beginning of the book Stella is describing a moment of racism that she recalls when she was very young She said " I didn't see Dr.Packard I accidentally stepped on his shoe and got some mud on it." When she explains this story she goes on to say the het mother had tried to clean his shoe but he pushed her over. Soon after he hit Stella has hard as he could and could her mean things. Although this book is fiction it shows the reality that is racism well. Now this story is set in the depression era so theses brutal treatments are pretty accurate the treatment of black's at the time.

Comparing the books to actually racism at the time

In the Depression era many blacks faced segregation. As we know money was very bad at the time and the problem was worse for blacks they earned less than whites. And already being in the depression era were there was barely any money this was a big problem. The book does a good job with this because it is mentioned in many parts of the book that they have little money not even having shoes '"Stella was more aware of her bare feet but walked with as much dignity"'. Many would strike outside of there work places during the depression eras to try to get them to pay them more money. Another big problem that surfaced was the kkk which is obviously talked about in the book

Racism is still a problem today but compared to the segregation that Blacks and other ethnicities used to deal with back then. We are pretty lucky. Although there are still similar problems that we face today. Blacks still face the problem of being paid less in the work place. They are also less likely to get hired if they have a black sounding name Apparently they are paid less in almost every education level too. Although we have done a better job at treating everyone as equals we don't show it when it comes to workplace wages.

You should always be mindful about people's feelings. Don't make someone feel downgraded because of their race or class. Start to take racism serious it's a real problem we see it very light heartedly but this isn't just something you should avoid because it doesn't effect you acknowledge it and do something about it. And if you don't have anything nice to say just don't say it. Yes although and old saying it's very true if you know you personally can have racists thoughts well no one can stop you. But that doesn't mean you have to be mean and harass people of color. Overall if you ever see racism don't just sit there and let it go one step in and do something about the situation.
