This statement, as many others stated by Obama in his interview with Michiko Kakutani speaks of applying literature to self identity.
Literature can often give us an escape from everyday life and contributing stressors. Commonly when we give ourselves that time to engage in compositions, we find time to reflect and surprisingly find a piece of ourselves in that literature even when least expected.

People can lose themselves in the lyrics of a song along with the feel and sound as well. We as a human race tend to migrate towards music that applies to our daily life and gives a sense of identifying with more than just ourselves.

A Lesson Before Dying is my favorite literature from this semester for many reasons. The dynamic of the relationships and identities was intriguing to read. I also enjoy this book the most because it applies to the things young men of color are experiencing today, and it helps give insight of how one may be effected by words and the imposed label given to them.

Although this book reflected mainly on childhood, it is slightly underrated in the identity aspect. Many young women could read this story and not feel alone. This is important because in some point of a young girls life she will see the empowerment of women diminished, and feel as if she is the only one that experiences this. This story cam be read by women of all ages and feel a sense of identity and relation to the characters in the book

This piece of literature can either strongly apply to who a person is or not. Either way it goes though it still speaks to who they are as a person. You can see yourself within this 'girl' that Jamaica Kincaid is explaining and reflect on the things they were told in their childhood and how it may have affected them today. Also, a person can also view it as completely unrelated to themselves. This story can help anyone really review what is important for them to teach younger girls whether it be their child or not, how they want to be identified, and remembered b.

In this poem it speaks from a mothers point of view of her son and his company interacting. Although it doesn't directly speak of what is important to possibly the mother herself, but what is to those children at that point in time. The boys argue about being older, wanting to be stronger, and better than the next. This can be observed in an group of young boys and what is important and how the self identify themselves and possibly can take the reader back to that time-frame of their own lives with the comfort of how naive they once were.

When reading this story one may think it about the store and everyone around but at the end understand its about the main character himself. All people can name on experience to where they've made an irrational decision for the approval of someone else, only to realize their actions did not matter. This story can make you chuckle in the imagery of being a foolish adolescence and being new to the world and having to find out the hard way how it works.

Often times people harbor feelings that is hard to put into words. So when a poem speak aloud what you were thinking it gives you a sense of belonging. In this poem is does speak to person and how they are feeling and themselves. To be able to relate and feeling that sense of understanding shows how important literature can be to unite people on a common territory with the same identity. This poem is still of relevance today and can give anyone a sense of perspective.

This poem, very much like I, Too by Langston Hughes applies still today. The importance of this poem is connecting a group of people that feel somewhat outcast, and making them feel united. People tend to not take others perspectives into consideration or their experiences that shaped them into whom they are. When reading this it puts life into perspective and makes a person evaluate how they may have contributed to the society that surround them.

This story can be highly appreciated when looking at each angle the story gives. Both of the main characters bring something different to the table. They both find common ground, but have a complete different way of approaching it. One is reverting back to tradition and the other isn't. This can challenge the reader into evaluating if they lost themselves in common society. Also, whether they want to be apart of their tradition or more comfortable not, which has become more common.

When getting further and towards the ending you can see a shift and maturation in the character. This story particularly shows the importance of family and the value of it to the main character. A person can relate to this and evaluate how important things are to them. Sometimes people forget who they are and this story helps a person remember. It can become comforting to experience this journey with this character and feel less alone on your own journey.

When reading the play you can find an understanding of how one can be effected by their life experience. On the other hand, you can understand the resentment it may cause between families. In the story itself it shows what is important to her. For the reader it gives them a change to put themselves in the shoes of the main character. When doing so this can help them evaluate their own values and how they would make a decision. It's interesting how one simple story can make you reevaluate yourself.
