But the answers to your questions are that Mexico's army was very overmatched. Mexico had 4,000 men going into the Battle, while the French army was much stronger, larger(8,000 men), and more prepared. It had been 50 years since their last loss in a battle. 
Also, the Battle only lasted a day, but it was a small part in the very large French-Mexican war, which lasted 6 years. And the individual battle made people more happy than upset. In total the war left many people in bad situations from the money and effort it takes to fight a war over years. #Expensive

Which wasn't bad but it still has an effect on people. Also Porfirio Díaz was given a lot of credit for the win of this battle.
