The first quote I am going to introduce is a flashback. A flashback is an interruption that a writer uses to bring up previous events. In this quote Maddie is remembering what happened the last time a family moved in next door. The quote is "Carla stares at me hard for a few seconds. I know what she's thinking. It's happening again. August 5, The family in the house next door moved away. The boy cried... Last night I had a dream that they didn't really move away. They got kidnapped by aliens. The aliens didn't take me because I'm sick and they wanted healthy people" (Yoon 16-18). Another literary device used is a simile. A simile is a comparison between two things using like or as. This quote is comparing Maddie's wish the imaginary things. Maddie says "Really there's only one thing to wish for- a magical cure that will allow me to run free outside like a wild animal. But I never make that wish because it's impossible. It's like wishing that mermaids and dragons and unicorns were real" (Yoon 11). Repetition is also used in this novel. Repetition is the reuse of a word multiple times in a sentence or phrases to get the idea across. This quote shows how boring and plain Maddie's life is. Maddie says "In my white room, against my white walls, on my glistening white bookshelves, book spines provide the only color" (Yoon 1). Another literary device used is hyperbole. A hyperbole is an exaggerated statement that is not meant to be taken literally. In this quote Maddie is talking about how she feels before she meets Olly. She says "My stomach doesn't just flip, it does high-wire somersaults without a net" (Yoon 67). There is also another example of hyperbole in this novel. In this quote Maddie is referring to how long the week felt before she could see Olly again. She says "AFTER AN EPOCH, the week finally ends" (Yoon 93).

One symbol is Maddie's white room and her colored books. The white room symbolizes how clean and organised her life has been due to her illness. It also symbolizes how plain and simple her everyday life is. The colored books represent life outside of her room. Maddie reads to see what life is like outside the world. Maddie believes that you can travel a thousand miles by reading a book.
Another symbol is the book Flowers for Alergnon. This book symbolizes Maddie's hope for a cure. She told her nurse, Carla, that she wanted to have the book with her when the cure was found. She has read it multiple times and it is never far from her. Even though Maddie knows that finding a cure is close to impossible she still hopes that one will be found and the book symbolizes that hope.
I used the first image to symbolize Flowers for Alergnon. The book is her hidden hope. In the midst of all of her acceptance she still has a glimmer of hope. I used the second image to represent the white room. This image is black and white and has the word repetition repeated multiple times. This symbolizes how plain and boring Maddie's life is with the disease.

Top Ten Quotes:
1. "The greatest risk is not taking one." (Nicola Yoon)
2. "Life is a gift. Don't forget to live it." (Yoon 141)
3. "You're not living if you're not regretting" (Yoon 186)
4. "promise- The lie you want to keep" (Yoon 194)
5."ocean- The endless part of yourself you never knew but always suspected was there" (Yoon 197)
6. "Spoiler alert: Love is worth everything. Everything." (Yoon 302)
7. "Wanting just leads to more wanting. There's no end to desire" (Yoon 83)
8. "asymptote- A wish that continually approaches but never achieves fulfillment" (Yoon 142).
9. "Maybe growing up means disappointing the people we love" (Yoon 218)
10. "infinite- The state of not knowing where one body ends and another begins: Our joy is infinite." (Yoon 226)
I chose this list because this book is full of inspiring quotes. Another reason I chose this list is that Madeline's dictionary is a feature throughout the book. Her dictionary depicts how she perceives what words mean in her own life. There are also many great quotes about taking risks. This book is so inspirational and has so many great quotes to prove it.
I chose this picture because of how inspirational this book is. Most of the quotes I chose were inspirational. The quotes inspire people to take risks. They also inspire people to live life to the fullest. Another reason I chose this picture is because it is bright and hopeful and that displays Maddie's attitude in all of the quotes I chose.
