         <description><![CDATA[<div>-The students will be testing color, hardness, and magnetic force with rock samples.&nbsp;<br>-There will be an "odd one out" among the three samples for each classification category.&nbsp;<br>-For example, for color, there may be two rocks that have a red streak, and one that has a brown streak.<br>-The students will record their answers on the worksheet provided and then explain in writing why a certain rock or mineral is the odd one out.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>-Some rocks have more than one color. To test the color of a rock we must test the streak the rock makes. Streak is the color of the line left behind when we scratch the rock against a white tile. <br>-Next we will test the hardness of the rocks. The Mohs hardness scale measures hardness on a scale of 1-10.  We scratch the rock with your fingernail, a penny, and a piece of glass. If a fingernail scratches the rock then the rock is softer than your fingernail, which is a 2.5 on Mohs scale and a penny is a 3 on the scale. -Finally, to test the magnetic forces of rocks you take a magnet and hold it to the rock, if there is a pull towards each other, the rock has magnetic force. </div>]]></description>

Then they will determine which rock is the "odd one out" in terms of color, hardness, and magnetic force and circle which rock/mineral they believe was the "odd one out." Lastly, they will have to justify their answer in the tables provided. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This assessment would be appropriate in a lesson where students are learning to classify objects based on their properties, such as rocks, animals, words or tools. &nbsp;<br><br>This assessment would not be appropriate with content which students are not familiar, because they would not know how to sort the objects. It also would not be appropriate if there is not enough specific information or data about the elements they are categorizing.<br><br>In terms of content, this assessment would not be appropriate to help assess students learn about graphing different reactions such as boiling point and melting point. It is also inappropriate to use for creating models of food chains or solar systems. However, this assessment is multifunctional in which it can be used for ELA, Science, Math, or Social Studies lessons.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>
