Get ready to build your independence. Boost your work-readiness. Make a positive impact on the world. Blossom in confidence. And form some amazing friendships along the way.

And the best bit? You can do it all away from home, online, or in your local community. Whatever suits you best.

What is NCS?

Welcome to NCS. We’re here to help young people grow their strengths. Over 750,000 young people have already done NCS, and in 2023 we’re offering a range of experiences — away from home, local community, and online.

How does NCS help young people to grow their strengths?

NCS offers a range of different types of experiences which are designed to help young people grow their strengths, boost their confidence, learn new skills, build their resilience, and make new friends.

Away from home experiences

Now live! Calling all the adventurers, aspiring entrepreneurs, and those looking to make a change in the world. Are you up for stepping outside your comfort zone, and spending five days with other young people learning new skills? Then grab your place today.

Local Community Experiences

Coming soon. Want to have a positive impact, meet new people, and learn new skills? Then social action projects and volunteering in your community could be just the thing! Don’t miss out — let us know if you’re interested and we’ll let you know as soon as they launch.

Online Experiences

Coming soon. Grow your skills while sitting on your sofa! You could take part in a range of innovative online experiences to boost your independence, resilience, and employability skills. Don’t wait for someone else to post about this on Insta.

The five-day away from home experiences are focused on one of three themes: employability (‘Boss It’), life skills (‘Live It’), or social action (‘Change It’).

The community experiences are taking place all over the country, giving young people the opportunity to take part in regular activities in their local area.

The online experiences can be done from home — on a laptop or smartphone. There are a range of different formats available, from content which can be consumed at your own pace, to live sessions with other young people and experts.

Each experience gives young people the opportunity to grow their strengths, build their confidence, learn new skills, and make new friends with people from different backgrounds.

How much does it cost?

The local community and online experiences are free of charge. The price of away from home experience is £95 — and bursaries are available. Did you know that the cost of providing an away from home experience is up to £1,500 per person? So, £95 is a pretty sweet deal, as the rest of the costs are funded by the government.

How do I sign up for an NCS experience?

Whether you’d like to do an away from home experience, or a local community or online one, you can sign up at https://wearencs.com/ or give one of the team a call on 0800 197 8010 and they’ll be happy to help you with the signup process.

NCS is offering students work experience - updated on 27/09/2024.

Beat It Percussion
Promoting Well-Being & Good Mental Health Through Rhythm & Sound
Beat It Percussion CIC aims to promote good mental health and support well-being through the medium of rhythm and sound.

They became a Community Interest Company in 2013 and have built a track record for providing therapeutic drumming and sound relaxation for a diverse range of groups in the community. Their innovative work with people who are living with dementia and their carers is well-recognised.

Now based in Sandwell and Birmingham, Beat It is establishing itself as a service provider across the region.

Services:
Rhythm for The Brain (formerly Rhythm for Well-being) Sessions are multi-sensory music workshops for of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. The majority of their Rhythm for the Brain sessions are provided for adults aged 50 and over and those with additional support needs.

Sound Relaxation

Imagine being in a peaceful, safe space, leaving all your worries and responsibilities behind and being bathed in beautiful, mesmerising sounds. You enter a dream-like state, floating on the sounds and experiencing pure relaxation. That is a Sound Bath.

We started to notice how people were drawn to our relaxing sensory instruments when we used them to finish our Rhythm for the Brain sessions. Many people respond very quickly to the overlapping harmonics produced by a tongue drum, or the sound of waves made by the Ocean drum.

A Gentle Beat project draws from techniques and instruments from the sound therapy discipline giving people who are often overlooked the opportunity for a creative experience. They passionately believe that people at all stages of life have the right to enjoy creativity and intimate human communications. This project is targeted at settings providing end-of-life and nursing care.

Community arts and voluntary sector projects
Their interactive and relaxation sessions lend themselves to community and themed events focused on well-being and interaction. Over the last 11 years Beat It Percussion has been involved in many community arts ventures from carnivals to concerts, themed events and busking.

Intergenerational Work using rhythm to integrate diverse groups in the community

Beat It Percussion is a dementia-friendly organisation. This important part of their work aims to embed greater awareness about dementia and its related issues within our communities, and recognising their continuing value as individuals in our society.

Fear and misunderstanding surround the subjects of ageing and dementia in the wider community. Through bringing children and young people into close contact with people in care settings this begins to change to acceptance and understanding. They use rhythm, song and socialising to introduce school children to elders and create events that are uplifting and rewarding for all who participate.

Work Experience
Beat It Percussion met with the Sandwell College Work Experience team and are looking to offer placements to students from various departments including music and performing arts, art and design, photography, computing, business and public service. Placements may include community sessions, preparing leaflets and publicity material, preparing online content and sound recording.

Percussion sessions
They are also able to offer sessions to foundation learning students at the college which include sensory learning and this is something that the foundation learning team are exploring.

Contact:
Lynn Kay (CEO)
Email: info@beatitpercussion.co.uk

Telephone
07875 090 946

Website: https://www.beatitpercussion.co.uk/

Possible Work Experience at West Midlands Prisons

Chris Milton, the Cadbury College Chaplain, works in prisons around the West Midlands, and is taking some of our work experience leaflets into the prisons and ask the teams there about possible placements. We discussed it and Chris said that there may be possible placements for students in public service / sport / performing arts / business / computing / health and social care - psychology – sociology – RE – Criminology (CSM) or sport / performing arts / business / law / psychology / politics / religious studies / sociology (Cadbury).

There are a few issues that make it harder – students would probably have to be aged 18+, although he said that he could try to ask them to be flexible on this.

Also, the prisons he works in are HM Prison Birmingham (Winson Green), Wolverhampton (Oakwood) and Lichfield (Swinfen Hall). Swinfen might be a bit far, but students may be able to get to Winson Green or Wolverhampton. Also students may have to get a DBS check.

The prison staff will come back to me about what opportunities may be available and to possibly arrange a meeting to discuss it further.

Chris also said that he is working with the prisons on an art project at the moment. The prisons have all got building work going on and they have wooden boards up around the construction sites. What the prisons would like to do is get local artists involved who can do murals / legal graffiti etc. on the boards to make them more visually appealing and to prevent illegal graffiti / anti-social behaviour etc.

More details to follow.

Contact details:

Chris.Milton@cadbury.ac.uk
