Therefore, Adam’s social context such as whether parents are still together, existence of any past or current domestic violence, any issues with substance misuse in the family, financial difficulties/ unemployment, housing issues, neighbourhood, social isolation, social support network, dysfunctional social relationships, dynamics at school, his relationship with his peers, any form of bullying etc have been considered.Studies as early as 80’s demonstrated consistent associations between family economic disadvantage and child psychopathology (Leckman, Weissman, & Merikangas, 1985). Therefore from the first meeting giving family (Adam’s mum, Adam, and step dad if they wish him to be involved) a voice is vital. According to Bordin (1979) the optimal therapeutic alliance is achieved when patient and therapist share beliefs with regard to the goals of the treatment and view the methods used to achieve these as efficacious and relevant.Practical steps to build a good TA • Offering parents choice of service • Offering parents suitable time and venue to be seen • Enquiring whether they have means of getting to the venue, if not is there any help we can provide• Offering parents cho• Offering parents choice of treatment ie CBT, family therapy, counselling • Having a real understanding of patient’s working capacity and offering treatment accordingly ie WICS results. • Identifying the main ‘issues/ problems’ together and creating a treatment plan/ formulating together. • Collaborative decision making, agreeing on each task, goal, strategy for Adam’s well- being, working as a team for Adam, and respecting their choice.From literature we know that TA is an important predictor for positive outcome in therapy. However, future research should pay special attention to the comparison between patients’ and therapists’ assessments of the therapeutic alliance (Rita B. Ardito* and Daniela Rabellino). What we count as good TA may not be perceived as ‘good’ by the person we work with.
