*My answers are based on the experiences during the pandemic and the hope for life free from the current restrictions:
Community: I would like to see, in my community, a celebration and recognition of the random and intentional acts of kindness, and less of the suspicion and cynical attitudes that is pervasive in, what seems like, daily life.

Country: Open-mindedness to the opinions expressed by others even when we don’t agree, that it not escalate to violence or ugliness of hateful words.

World: An awareness and open appreciation for different cultures, beliefs and ways of life around the world, without the righteousness that their culture is the dominant or “right” way simply because they live it.
Overall, acceptance for one another is my underlying theme with the hope that we can embrace the diversity of culture without trying to change it; moreover, find ways to change so that the dominant culture is inclusivity and collaboration with each other on a global scale.
Note: To see the graphic above click on it :)

Community: The change I wish I could affect in my community is the broadening of my neighbours' worldviews. There is so much division in our community that truly spreads from narrow-minded and selfish points of view.

Country: The change I would like to see in my country is the adoption and commitment to technologies that will better our environment. I understand that the transition from our current energy sources to new ones will not be easy and will not happen with the wave of a wand, however, I am hopeful to see progression rather than regression.

World: I would like to see the world make a concerted effort to preserve and practice good water management skills. For the past few years I have shown a documentary about water to any class I have been teaching to try and instill some of that concern about how water is treated on Earth right now. It is our most important resource and we do not treat it that way.

World: I wish I could change how people view the environmental crisis. If we took care of the environment so many positive changes would be impacted. For example dry seasons destroy crops and decrease the agricultural industry which can really affect poorer countries who really on agriculture for their main source of food. More people would have access to safer homes, many people live in houses that have been destroyed by hurricanes, tornados, tsunamis and still have not had their houses repaired.
Country: Paid education. Although I love education, I would prefer if we paid into our taxes to pay for education instead. I also think this would help spread the wealth gap and it would provide higher education access to more students.
Community: Increase jobs, and community organizations. I feel community organizations help people connect with like-minded people and share hobbies and I think Ottawa could use more.

Country: A more balanced dispersion of healthcare, education, and resources. In many countries there are specific areas of privilege vs. local/rural areas that do not receive the same resources.
In terms of education, I'd like to see more global cultural knowledge implemented in the curriculum as opposed to nationalistic centred learning goals. As students become more globally connected, they often lack the knowledge/ understanding to engage with others who they are unfamiliar with.

Community: More community/ volunteer participation in community initiatives to solve issues specific to that area. For example - mental health, drug abuse, homelessness, wealth disparities, natual disaster relief etc.

World: A global movement towards battling social justice issues such as human rights, racial injustice, climate change, etc. Despite the cliche goal of "world peace", it is better to achieve any steps towards bettering these issues. With the increase of global communication and connectivity, I also think it important to address issues of language/ culture preservation and cultural imperialism that arise from this.

World: I wish that more people were able to travel and experience different places and cultures around the world. Currently, it is reserved for those who have the job flexibility and financial means. However, I believe that staying or living in an unfamiliar place for a period of time and learning and listening to people of various ways of life would be beyond valuable for building a global community! I believe traveling instills compassion, acceptance and appreciation. I also believe that when world issues which do not typically impact you are all of a sudden right in front of your face they become a lot harder to ignore.

Country: I wish that Canada would begin to elevate indigenous voices in our country. Before moving to the Northwest Territories, I knew almost nothing about indigenous history or culture. I am so grateful for my experiences and the people I met while living there and I wish everyone could have that opportunity. That immersive experience completely changed my perspective and educational philosophy.

Community: I wish we could promote a greater sense of empathy in the community for others with differing opinions. The comments sections on local news articles are full of people with differing opinions speaking to each other in condescending and vicious language. It is heartbreaking how people within the same community could feel so divided and disconnected from each other. I would love for there to be an event that reminds us all of our sameness and humanity so that we could respectfully disagree without hatred or division.

World: I would like to see more equity in terms of access to knowledge and innovation in the world. The pandemic has highlighted this inequity in an extreme way where we saw wealthier countries taking advantage of the race for vaccines for themselves before ensuring there was equitable access around the world. For example, I would read articles about Canada and the Unites States destroying surplus vaccines while at the same time reading articles about less wealthy countries still desperately looking to secure vaccines. In summary, I would like to see a shift in open access to knowledge and life saving technologies (like vaccines) to benefit the global community rather than just for the benefit of the wealthy nations.

Country: At the national level, I would like to see equity in terms of access to resources. For example, there are communities in our country that do not have access to clean drinking water, which should be a basic right of all Canadians to have. Equal access to technologies like the internet, as well, was highlighted during the pandemic as we saw wealthier students with access to the digital technologies needed to learn online were significantly more able to succeed with online learning. Again, in a wealthy country like Canada, all students should have equal access to the technologies they need to learn in an equitable way.

Community: At the local level, I would like to see equity in access to resources being spread more evenly between all communities. For example, my school is located in an area of the Lower Mainland that has quite a high socio-economic standing. As a result, the schools in my community benefit from significant parent donations that benefit student learning in terms of access to technologies and resources. Other communities in the Lower Mainland are not as wealthy and the local schools do not receive many parent donations, so their students do not benefit from the same access to technologies and resources that their more wealthy counterparts do. I would like to see change in the way funding is assigned to schools to help mitigate these inequities.

Community: Public health education such as the importance of COVID-19 vaccination. More importantly, being fully vaccinated does not mean one can drop all the other public health measures such as wearing masks, handwashing, physical distancing during the pandemic. However, it is crucial to be vaccinated because it helps lower the risk of getting and spreading the virus, as there are not enough studies about the long-term effects after one is infected with COVID-19.

Country: I wish the Canadian government would provide easy access to services and information from the government in various languages, even during a pandemic when things are urgent and require everyone to understand how to stop spreading the virus. As Canada's diverse population is increasingly growing, I found the government's COVID-19 guidelines and resources are often only available in English and French, and then it takes a very long time to publish the translation in different languages.

World: Social equity and poverty issues. I hope that no one in the world should worry about hunger, food insecurity, clean water, clothes, housing issues, education, healthcare accessibility. These are basic necessities of humans, yet many families and children struggle and suffer from those worldwide, even within the first countries.

Community: I wish we were more supportive of people who have mental health issues. Mental health is a social problem, and we should work together to fix the societal factors that lead to these problems (e.g., discrimination, low income, corruption, violence). Additionally, our community needs to do a better job in reducing the stigma around mental health and providing access to resources that help improve individuals' mental health.

Country: I wish we could find better ways to support cultural diversity in all settings and learn to value and embrace our differences. Immigrants coming to this country bring a lot of knowledge and expertise that could help this country's economy and educational development. Therefore, we should improve the current integration policies and practices to ensure immigrants' wellbeing.

World: I wish women could be treated with respect and equality in all aspects of society. Women still suffer from significant discrimination levels and continue to have social issues such as the gender income gap, domestic violence, and uneven access to education. Creating a better world entails empowering women and advocating for their equal rights.

Overlying themes in my "Hope for Change" are respect, equality and relationship and the DIGITAL DIVIDE. There is a tendency, especially in privileged nations, to assume that everyone has access to technology and connection to the internet. This assumption is erroneous and the disconnected are most often part of a social, economic, racial, ethnic demographic.

Community: Being forced online in March, 2020, was a trying experience for most educators and their students. Learning various platforms and trying to maintain relationships with students through a screen was not an easy feat. I faced some arduous battles in my role as EAL Consultant. The first to assist newcomers with language barriers in accessing programs and connection with their teachers and classmates. The second and most frustrating was trying to find a way to get technology and internet connection to those who had none, and this number is much higher than you might assume. With support from our immigration groups and some corporations we put a dent in the accessibility issues, but every student in need was definitely not supported. I would love to see this change.

Country: The Digital Divide, that between have and have-nots, is only magnified outside of my community. Of course, the issues with Immigrants and Refugees remains and is expanded, but First Nations Students on reserves often lack technology and connection to the internet, and with schools constantly flipping on and off-line and being in a state of flux, this just increases the amount of at-risk individuals not accessing education, support, and relationships. There are many other demographics who also struggle and this issue is not addressed in the capacity it needs to be. My hope is that someday soon, it is.

World: Larger stage, larger issues. The disparity and inequality is again magnified. There are refugees who trade food and healthcare for wifi minutes to connect with the families they left behind or who left them behind. In what world is this okay? It is a pipe dream to say this divide can be close in my lifetime, my it is a dream nonetheless.

Community: Swift and thorough follow through to provide support to those experiencing mental health issues, addiction, homelessness coupled with greater empathy. The wheels of change move surprising slow with the municipal government in Northern Ontario. They might have an action plan, but the process of actually following through appears to be incredibly slow. Some solutions seem like they can be actioned fairly quickly and simply and make a great difference in individual’s lives, however I struggle to find the follow through with social initiatives by local government. Additionally, there seems to be insular lines of thinking where some community members are unwilling to sympathize with the plight of those experiencing mental health issues, addiction and homelessness.

Country: I think collective memory in Canada tends to overlook darker aspects of our history focus more on our triumphs. Wartime persecution of Jews in internment camps in Canada, blatant and outright anti-Semitism within the government that led to the SS St Louis being turned away, colonialism, slavery, human trafficking, residential schools are often neglected parts of our national history. I would like to see a drastic improvement, even legislation related to historical understandings, how we remember, memorialize and interpret various events.

World: Inaction with relieving the world of poverty, hunger and disease. While actions plans might exist within the walls of the UN, and western governmental offices. The execution of these plans is often questionable. Similar to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission reports Calls to Action, how many of those calls have been met with an adequate response? Certainly not all 94. Correspondingly, the UN might have a concrete action plan to deal with poverty, hunger and disease and submit various recommendations. However, I would like the action and afterlife of these recommendations to be taken seriously.

I think the last couple of years have really shown the many cracks in our political, environmental, economical, and educational systems. As educators, we can address some of these issues, and open the eyes of the students to pursue and challenge the inequalities around.
Community: There are huge gaps in access to technology and the ability to use said technology between the different generations. This is especially true when we look at the immigrant population. There is a big need for technological literacy skills education in our communities as they have become the basic needs to access jobs, education, and basic civic rights and responsibilities.

Country: I think we as a country have seen the power that the government has at the beginning of the pandemic. We can also see now that the government does not want to use that power for everyone's benefit. CERB has presented a taste of the universal income for many Canadian citizens. I have read studies and heard many anecdotes of how 'the first months of the global pandemic was the healthiest and most secure many people have felt.' I think the way that people approach work and education would change if they no longer made such choices for survival.

World: A very naive hope of mine would be to abandon borders and 'countries' and instead recognize that we are all citizens of the same world. There is so much food and resource waste in the western countries of the world, meanwhile, millions of people are starving and lack basic human needs. It is embarrassing to live in such conditions where everyone knows the state of the world yet we individually can do next to nothing and our governments are pretending not to see.

It is ironic how all my thoughts of change now are revolved around the pandemic. Didn’t we have issues to worry about pre-pandemic?!

Community: From the start of the pandemic, a group of people in my community started an initiative to provide adults in need with tablets, the second step was meant to enable them on technology and internet, but the lack of funding rendered this from happening. Perhaps, I wish to have more sense of responsibility and empathy in my community so that we can continue with such projects.

Country: An improvement rather than a change to the health care system in Canada. Increasing the # of emergency departments and staff is crucial to be able to attend to patients’ needs in a timely manner and to increase readiness to face issues such as this pandemic.

World: six out of ten children and adolescents worldwide were not learning a minimum in reading and mathematics in 2017 (UNESCO, 2021). This makes me pause and wonder what the new number would be with the pandemic, were many kids have no access to internet/devices or even electricity. So, the first thing I would change in the world is giving all kids equal access to education. This change will eventually solve many global issues.

Community: People will go on mission trips to help others around the world, which is incredible but sometimes I wish people knew how much their local community needs help itself. For example, in my city, there is a charity called, "Soup Sundays" which is going on during the cold winter months. "Soup Sunday's" is when locals can make soup or provide canned soup and then this charity group will provide soup for the homeless. It was such a hit the first couple of weekends that there is enough soup for the next 6 months.

Country: In Canada, I would want the curriculum to reflect and change towards the truth about Canada's Indigenous heritage. The curriculum is still very misleading and shadows what Indigenous individuals endured and how Canada came to be.

World: I have always been passionate about feminism. I still do not understand how men can make more than a woman and both are working the same job. I have no idea how this makes sense and is still going on. For example, in the Netflix movie "Don't Look Up" Leonardo DiCaprio was paid $5 million more than Jennifer Lawerence despite them both being the lead characters.

World: The world is not inclusive for all people. For example, I can not safely travel to certain countries where homosexuality is illegal. Many refugees, people without passports, and even people with certain passports are limited to where they can travel. Additionally, people with physical disabilities are limited to travelling to areas that are accessible. I would like to improve universal access, (physical, safety, etc.) to all global citizens and make inclusion a priority.

Country: Canada should be enforcing human rights and creating initiatives that enable inclusion. This means stepping in when a province discriminates against teachers who wear religious symbols; as we saw recently when a teacher was removed from her class for wearing a hijab in Chelsea, Qc.

Community: My city, Montreal, is not accessible to many people with disabilities. For example, few metro stations have wheelchair access (only stairs). However Quebec's Accessibility Act stresses the need for accessible public services. There needs to be more action taken to make spaces accessible for all people. Additionally the Act does not include private spaces, which limits access to many services and institutions. This Act needs to be better enforced and it should include more requirements for private businesses and services to be inclusive of people with disabilities.

Community: I wish that my community provided more comprehensive social services for people such as affordable housing, access to safe injection sites, and drug and addiction counseling. The more we help out and uplift every member of our community, the more we can come together to assure that everyone has everything that they need to succeed.

Country: My main wish for Canada would be to expand universal healthcare. Canada has a universal healthcare system that is far from perfect; it is still severely lacking in basic mental health services as well as pharmacare. Mental health services and prescriptions are extremely costly, and Canadians should not have to worry about being able to afford their rent or afford their prescriptions. Oftentimes, provincial drug programs are either too strict or omit many life saving medications needed for those who suffer from various illnesses.

World: I would like to see a global movement that enforces basic human rights such as access to healthcare, clean drinking water, and food security. The pandemic further highlighted the inequities that many people suffer in other countries.

Community: I moved to Portland, Oregon in July 2021. I am fortunate to have a job at a private middle school, where I teach French. My students are very fortunate and come from families with higher socio-economic status. Each student is provided with a laptop, and they are given a lot more freedom. I often wonder if these students are aware by their fortune to attend a private school. Portland is also a city with growing homelessness. Students and their families will avoid visiting certain parts of the city due to the presence of homelessness. I am surprised by how quickly humans do not treat other humans as such due to differences in socio-economic status. There is such a great contrast between the have's and have-not's in Portland.

Country: While the COVID-19 pandemic has fuelled the rise in homelessness, it is not a new phenomena. I wonder what countries can do to better support people with mental health support, financial support, and medical care. I believe that education is a key component to helping the rise in homelessness across the world.

World: I wish that educational textbook did not have the same borders as countries. All too often the ideas, inventions, and discoveries of different countries are not represented in education. As an adult, I can now see that ideas are sometimes presented to children as facts, but these 'facts' are limited to geographical areas, and ignore the voices of others.

World: I wish there was a more equitable distribution of resources in the world. We are all struggling through the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet rich countries like Canada and the United States have many resources like masks and vaccines to help their populations stay healthy while poorer countries go without. We also see this echoed with resources as basic as food and water. I wish resources could be given to those who need them most rather than those who have the most money (people and countries).

Country: I wish Canada would adopt more compassionate drug laws and policies. Someone using an illegal drug doesn't make them any more dangerous than someone who uses legal drugs like marijuana, alcohol, or caffeine. We need to stop criminalising drug users. No one belongs in prison or deserves a criminal record unless they pose a significant threat to others in their community.

Community: Recently, in my community, a small, family-run bakery was robbed twice. The second time the thief broke the owner's hand. Following the robberies, the community rallied behind the bakery (https://www.facebook.com/brownloafelgin). I encourage all of you to click the link to see what happened.

I wish that we could show this kind of support for our community members more often. When we come together to support those who are struggling we can help to make everyone's lives a little easier.

Local businesses in the area are being forced to shut down because crime in the neighbourhood is driving out community members and customers. Although the issue is intertwined with other complex social issues surrounding homelessnes, drugs, mental health, and more, I wish that I could help this community of Asian-Canadian immigrants rebuild and thrive.

Country:

(Canada)

Since working in public libraries, I have noticed that newcomers to Canada often have difficulty finding appropriate resources for their needs.

"What do you wish you could change about the world, the country, and the community?"

The world:
I wish for people to genuinely care and look into the issues that have caused a lot of people around the world, to suffer. We learned from this pandemic, that we are so interconnected and dependent on each other, that a start up of a virus on one end of the world, closed down all parts of the world, and continues to affect us today. Moreover, if the world is one big house, then what happens in one end of the house will greatly affect everyone else, so, it is only right to be mindful of each other.

The country:
I wish for people to accept each other’s differences. This can be achieved by opening forums for discussions on religion, cultural differences, mental health, refugee stories, etc., all for the sake of education. I think with education, people can better understand others, instead of formulating assumptions about others simply for not knowing them. When we listen to each other, and be informed of one another’s stories and culture, we will better understand each other, and hopefully this will reduce events of hate and racism.

The community:
I wish for everyone to get to know their neighbors, exchange foods, gifts and invite each other over. This way, everyone learns about everyone else’s culture and traditions. My wish is for everyone to get to know their community, at a deep, cultural level to better connect with others. With cultural knowledge, one can easily start a conversation with a co-worker who may look different, build connections, and work better in a diverse team project. Building a strong community means people getting a long, benefiting from each other’s differences, and so, making significant positive changes everyday.

The leadership of authoritarians has deprived me and other Chinese people of many human rights, including the freedoms of speech, religion, and assembly, etc. Furthermore, growing up in China, my critical thinking and creativity have been greatly impacted at schools. Teachers teach us with the authorized curriculum and no one dares to question the knowledge in the textbooks of the Chinese, Politics and History and relevant learning resources available to us. Therefore, we have not been given opportunities to analyze what we read and critique them properly. It is a great pity as critical thinking is so crucial for learners.

World: I wish that there would be no war in our world.
