explain how environmental issues affect food supply and nutritional quality of food.

Environmental issues affect our food supply and it's nutritional quality. On the subject of the environment, the textbook stated, "When we look at what we eat and how we grow it, we find extensive evidence for damage both to our food (from pollution and soil depletion) and to our environment (from the toxicity of growing foods industrially)," (12). Due to the increase of pollution and soil depletion, our food supply is suffering. Another point brought out was, "vitamin C has declined by 20 per- cent, iron by 15 percent, riboflavin by 38 percent, and calcium by 16 percent. So we are now getting less nutrition per calorie in our foods," (13). This means we have to eat more food to get the same vitamin and mineral benefits.

explain the benefits and risks of using dietary supplements and diet aids.
Using dietary supplements can be both risky and beneficial. One benefit, as mentioned by the textbook, is, "Scientific evidence shows that some dietary supplements are beneficial for overall health and for managing some health conditions," (11). Another plus is, "Some supplements might help you get adequate amounts of essential nutrients," (11). It may be hard for us to get it al those vital nutrients we need everyday, but taking supplements can help. One negative aspect of taking diet aids is, "the possibility of unexpected side effects, especially when taking a new product," (11). We must always be cautious when it comes to taking something our bodies are not used to.

My mom always tries to eat healthy balanced meals. However, she has a magnesium deficiency. Because of this, she takes Magnesium supplements everyday. After regularly taking it her nerves are more calm, she has more regular bowl movements, and less muscle cramping. She also takes fish oil. This increased her HDL's, and she experiences less joint pain because of it.
