Scene 1; Horatio joins some guards outside of the castle after hearing a rumor that they saw the ghost of the dead king the night before. Well, it turned out to be true, and they are awe-struck and fearful. 
Scene 2; All of the important people are gathered in the castle, and the uncle of Hamlet is now king. The uncle basically tells Hamlet it's not manly to be sad about his father. Hamlet is then by himself(Soliloquy) and basically talks about being overwhelmed. 
Scene 3; It then moves to the house of Polonius, where the story introduces Ophelia, the daughter of Polonius. And also Laretes, the son of Polonius. Laretes basically tells Ophelia not to trust Hamlet, and says Hamlet probably doesn't love her. Polonius Also tells her not to trust Hamlet, and even orders her to stay away from him.
Scene 4; Horatio and his buddies bring news to Hamlet, that they have seen the ghost of his father the dead king, so they all leave the castle and start heading to where the guards saw the ghost.  Once they finally find the ghost, everyone is scared except for Hamlet, and Hamlet decides to follow the ghost even though his friends tell him not to. 
Scene 5; Hamlet is skeptical when he first starts speaking to the ghost, until the ghost reveals that he is the king, his father. He tells Hamlet about how his death was staged, and what really happened was the Uncle poisoned the king. He did this to take the throne and the queen without being discovered. Hamlet swears to avenge his father and wont rest until it is done. Hamlets also makes his friends swear to speak nothing of that night to anyone.

He is determined to avenge his father, who no one knows was killed and poisoned by the uncle.

Hotatio -- is a guard for the castle, and a close friend/loyal servant to Hamlet. He guards the castle, and watches out for Hamlet. 
 
Polonius -- is the father of Ophilia and Laretes, and is very old school style and quite controlling. He is the main figure in the "house of Polonius". He is wise and someone quite important.

Laretes -- is the son of Polonius. He is Ophelia's older brother, and often gives her tips. Especially tips about love and about Hamlet. He also has a girl of his own.

Ophelia -- is the daughter of Polonius, she's in love with Hamlet even though they barely know each other. She's not really kept in the loop, and will probably be married off by her father.

Laretes seems like an old wise guy in the first film, and more of a stern younger military figure in the 2nd film.
