In teaching math to her elementary students, San Pascual teacher Josephine Yadeger enlisted a process that put ISTE Empowered Learner Standard 1a to work: “Students set personal learning goals, develop strategies leveraging edtech to achieve them and reflect on the learning process itself.” She gave her students a choice of goals for what they would like to know at the end of a lesson, whether that’s balancing an equation or just getting a correct answer. After the lesson, Yadeger asked her students to reflect on what they had learned. The process, Yadeger said, helps students keep track of their learning.

Jamie Kearns, a middle school teacher in Vallejo, California, uses a computer simulation to help her students grasp the concept of slope intercept form. In the game, students have to use math to land a plane on a runway. If they get the math wrong, their plane might swerve off the runway and crash. Students receive immediate feedback from the technology, which also allows them to continue practicing until they master the concept. For student, Jassalyn, the simulation helped her understand the concept and it motivated her to persevere. “It reassures me that I can make a mistake and still learn,” she said. “We have a visual representation, and we can experiment with other kids in the class, which will also help develop our knowledge.” It’s a great example of ISTE Empowered Learner Standard 1c: “Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice.”

In the process, the students are practicing ISTE Empowered Learner Standard 1d: “Students understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations, demonstrate the ability to choose, use and troubleshoot current technologies and are able to transfer their knowledge to explore emerging technologies.” Licon says, “Anything they can remove from the computer, they can fix.” That includes screens, keyboards and keys, DC jacks and batteries and they can transfer this knowledge to diagnose and repair problems. “The coolest thing is they do. They do. They figure it out,” Licon says.

Alma Gracia, an elementary school teacher at Los Angeles Unified School District, is teaching her students about digital citizenship during their restorative justice circles, which aims to build positive behavior and strengthen communities. She talks to her students about how their actions have consequences, and that if you hurt someone online, it could stay there forever. Gracia’s students are learning about ISTE Digital Citizen Standard 2a: “Students are aware of the permanence of their actions in the digital world.” Gracia has her students practice good digital citizenship by writing their own rules for protecting their digital footprints. “When I started teaching, I never thought I would be teaching things like this. But we are teaching the leaders of the world. I’m glad I’m part of it because I want to be part of that change.”

Teacher Laura Gallardo and her high school in San Bernardino, California, used a local history project to help teach students how to interact constructively online. The students researched a nearby community that was removed to make way for a reservoir. Students peer edited each other’s work and gave feedback in positive ways. In that process, the students practiced ISTE Digital Citizen Standard 2b: “Students engage in positive, safe, legal and ethical behavior when using technology, including social interactions online or when using networked devices.” Gallardo says that in their social media culture, students tend to focus on the negative. The project’s guidelines, she said, “give students an equation, essentially, on how to speak positively. Instead of just hitting the ‘like,’ they actually get to express themselves.”

The fourth-graders in Karina Navas’ classroom at Los Angeles Unified School District learn early on what copyright is. Navas runs her students through a scenario: You’ve found a picture on Google that you want to use in your report. How do you go about getting permission? And once you get permission, how do you give proper attribution? The students record their responses on Flipgrid, some of which are then shared with the class. Other students offer feedback. It’s a lesson that encompasses ISTE Digital Citizen Standard 2c: “Students demonstrate an understanding of and respect for the rights and obligations of using and sharing intellectual property.” “I feel like I’m preparing my students and not only helping them here but also at home or anytime they’re using technology,” she said.

When teaching a unit on the U.S. Bill of Rights, teacher Katrina Traylor Rice decided the best way to drive home the implications of privacy rights was to connect it to her students’ real lives. She asked her high school students to take out their cell phones, go to their settings and explore changes that they could make to manage how much and what type of information apps were collecting about them. One of Rice’s students, Kaia, said it was an eye-opening experience. “A lot of your social media can also find your location. They can also access your gallery and even your voice memos. It’s just crazy!” It was a lesson that addressed ISTE Digital Citizen Standard 2d: “Students manage their personal data to maintain digital privacy and security and are aware of data-collection technology used to track their navigation online.”
