This philosophy emerged in the 1830's and the transcendentalist were people who believed that nature was the key to everything. Ralph Waldo Emerson and David Henry Thoreau were key personas in this movement and to this day have an impact on how some people view the world. Emerson was a great influencer on Thoreau and both wrote books that inspired many to see past what the materialistic aspect of the world and to see nature and it's beauty.
