I have been told to not judge a book by its cover (literally) but alas, I have fallen to this habit that to some could be considered a sin. The cover depicts a upside down silver crown with red blood dripping down from its base. I know I love the fantasy, dystopian, and sci-fi genera’s. although a royal or kingdom like story generally are not my forte. They USUALY include a love triangle of sorts and I have not come across a book that has that stereotype and still includes good storyline that I like. Despite all this I reluctantly take her positive attitude and recommendation and take the book to read. In the book there are the royal silvers who have many different supernatural powers and the reds who are poor commoners who some are forced to fight in a war. Conflict arises when the main character Mere is a Red with powers. Hearing this summery I honestly get very excited. Combat, drama, powers, adventure, friends, foes, suspenseful events engulfing the reader in a world to escape our own. It is everything I look for in a book and more. It gets even better when I started reading. It took twenty-five pages or so but afterwards I was hooked into the story’s very interesting and eventful plot.

I hear you Ms. Terry, you said that this was a really good book and if I’m being completely honest I didn’t believe you. But after being one hundred and fifteen pages (or eleven finished chapters) in I absolutely love this book. Its full of the things I’m looking for in a book. However most of all I love the imagery and sensory language making the reader feel the feelings and emotions Mere (the main character) is going through. Just the way Victoria Aveyard write this language is both chilling and exciting at the same time and literally keeps your hairs on end. I cant do justice so this is a insert of the book when mere was discovering her lightning powers on pages 70 and 71 “But- I can feel it. I feel the heat of the sparks, running up and down my body, setting every nerve on fire… Something moves beneath my skin, but its not the sparks. I look at my hands, my arms, marveling at the lightning as it glides over me… I feel something quite different. Like with the sparks before, my nerves sing, alive with some inner fire. It moves in me, behind my eyes, beneath my skin, until I feel more then myself.” Its so descriptive and surreal  it feels like you could be in meres shoes feeling the surges and strands of lightning hovering and crackling over your body. Mere has gone to her old village and now has some alliance with the scarlet guard? I’m confused to be honest, I thought this book was going to have action and drama as of right now all I’m getting is filler. DON’T GET ME WRONG, I love the story and how its going so far but I’m just worried and don’t know what direction the story is going to go next. It could have mere get closer and more knowledge about the Silvers or maybe with the Scarlet Guard. The problem I see with that is how is mere going to help them while in the position of acting as a princess. She would either have to have Reds infiltrate or communicate to her through a heavily guarded and dangerous part of the city or have mere constantly have to sneak out and to be honest that doesn’t sound realistic. Mere having to sneak out over and over again and somehow never get caught? It would not make sense and if it happened it would be giving too much perfect coincidences to Mere. Despite all of this I am enjoying the story so far, I am egger to see the next step in the story line and also find out more about Meres powers and how it all works. I think that is one of the many things that fascinate me most about this books plot, the abilities, social structure, laws and how this work in this far-off universe.

In my last blog I had Said that the book was getting slow and had a lot of filler but oooh boy was I wrong. I started to get impatient and wanted to see more action and or gory dramatic fight scenes and I hadn’t got much of that yet, until now. Mere continued to learn about her powers and to my surprise never heard anything from Scarlet guard other then stick with the plan to attack during a Ball. Mere has also been put taken out of lessons with Julian, The Queens brother, to a group training with Rane Arven as an instructor. Mere is in said class with Cal, Maven, Evangeline, and several other students. During training one day, Maven is put in an arena with a nymph (a silver who can control water). Afterwards Evangeline challenges mere to fight her in said arena… Mere may lose and be cut by Evangeline’s metal attacks, mere can’t be exposed, mere is a red…. You can see the problem here. Just listen to this, “’You’re faster. Keep her on the run. Don’t be afraid.’ Another knife blazes by, this time digging into the ground at my feet.’ Don’t let her see you bleed.’…My foot connects with her leg, sweeping it out from under her, and she crashes to the floor next to me. I’m on her in the second, despite the exploding pain in my back. My hand crackle with hot energy. Even as they collide against her face. Pain sears through my knuckle-bones but I keep going, wanting to see sweet silverblood.” The battle was intense, gory, descriptive, and kept me on the edge of my seat just thirsting for the next thing that will happen next in the story.

Jeez my head is spinning and mad and excited and worried and on end all at once I’m going through too much. I am in love with this book and if the rest of the series is this good HA, sign me up right now. So Cal is going to go to war but before that he going to the royal ball for some reason that I honestly don’t remember, sorry. So anyways mere sucks at dancing and cant get her feet in time so Cal helps her. A while goes buy and she gets better, oh also THEY FLIPPING KISS. I kind of saw It coming but I didn’t know when or how they opportunity would arise like that but oh heck it did. So mere it’s the next day and maven comes to talk to mere about the whole scarlet guard stuff and she feels bad for you know killing four people who all have family’s and people that care about them or rely on them or whatever, but maven goes all responsible over here saying in a nutshell “ yeah it sucks but they will die for a good cause even though they wouldn’t agree because politics”. I'm not going to lime i'm a little mad about that but oh well. I’m really curious how this whole Cal and mere thing will work out even though you said it was just starting to get resolved in the FOURTH BOOK. THINGS JUST WENT DOWN. I’m so confused and I’m a mix of upset, mad, curios, and happy all at the same time. In my last blog I had been at the end of chapter eighteen, now I’m on chapter twenty four and so much has happened. The Scarlet guard made a terrorist attack on a ball planning on killing on four and due to a pipe exploding closer to fourteen died. Meres friends got captured and tortured so she works with Julien to break them out. So much has happened so I’ll save that for latter. THE SHOOTING WAS INTENCE. There were so many emotions that stirred in my mind during both the terrorist attack and the break out. During the entire ball room terrorist attack all I could think is someone is going to get hurt. Something will happen or people will die AND GUESS WHAT HAPPENED, oh nothing just A EXPLODEING PIPE KILLING TEN MORE THEN MENT TO. The entire time mere has to sit there and play innocent as a princes and pretend with all her might to control herself in front of her friends being tortured when captured and its terrifying, NO details were spared. When mere askes Julian to help it takes some convincing but make this awesome plan where they sneak around in plain sight using their abilities and ITS SOO COOL AND SCARRY AND UGG. I’m so sorry If this blog isn’t what you expected or is difficult to understand, just know I LOVE THIS BOOK.

WHAT THE ACTUAL FLIP YOU BACK STABBIMG PIECE OF UN TRUSTWORTHY GOOD FOR NOTHING SON OF A DEMON QUEEN FROM HELL… sorry Mrs. Terry, I’m just a little upset. So maven is a bad guy now, when maven and mere were being interrogated by the king, queen, and call. The queen mind controls the king and call freeing maven. Then make Cal kill the king and make it look like a murder for the crown and maven had been using and planning this to become king. Well yeah I’m pissed. Like one how the heck did I not see this coming? So maven is evil and cruel and just a few short jumps away from being just like his mom, following im your mother’s footsteps eh maven? So the execution was set pretty soon Cal and mere were awesome super powerful and the gore and description in the whole scene was intense as usual (thanks Victoria). Well until they killed five executioners mere without her powers for the majority of the fight and several thousand solders cone to kill them. OH YEAH how they arn’t dead and there is still three books of story left. The scarlet guard isn’t dead, they killed a bunch of guards I think and somehow took them into the undertrain? I’m honestly confused how it all worked but it did, Oh and shade, meres brother? The one that was believed to be dead for two thirds of the story due to running from the war front and has powers like mere? Yeah that guy, he’s alive. Soooo yeah I’m confused and excited. Ima just read now.

I think mere is like escaping or something I don’t know. BUT I made a House. So all last week I was trying to figure out what silver house I would be in and got it down between the powers skin healers, nymphs, singers, and whispers (I forgot the houses). However I couldn’t chose one so I made my own. So my house is called House Rogers, named after myself of Corse. And their abilities are named phantoms (or enchanters formally). A phantom is just that, a ghost, a person who you may never know who they are or even what their abilities are, and even more frightening what they are capable of. See phantoms look like normal citizens until the activate their power. When an enchanter activates there power the center of the iris will change from there natural eye color to a bright almost shining golden amber color. When their eyes are active the enchanter has two options. If they can see any living being they can communicate telepathically with it for as long as the enchanter can see that being. But that is just the beginning. If the enchanter makes direct eye contact with any living being (humans being advanced). the phantoms original body must lay down or sit close to the ground and goes into a meditative state glowing gold eyes, but the phantom’s mind isn’t there, its in the hosts. The unfortunate being to look into the enchanters eyes goes their beings consciousness goes black like they are in a dark room unable to move a muscle... because they can’t. and the enchanter is now in the body of the being, and the only sign is the hosts eyes are not their own but the phantoms ominous gold amber. The phantom can then do anything they please as long as their own body is not harmed. If the hosts body is killed then the phantom just goes back and out of their meditative state. The colors for the house are dark blue like my own eye color, gold like the phantoms shining active eyes, and white like the color of a ghost moving from host tot host invisible and unseen from the world.. until its too late. Ok so I’m reading Glass Sword right now and honestly I am reeeealy lost. So Mere escaped with shade who can teleport, they I think are on some underwater boat to an island maybe? Or something about an island was mentioned. I don’t really know or care to know I just what it to get good. When I read a book I want to love it, otherwise I don’t read it. I’m a good student I really am, but to give you a since of what I mean. Last year when we were assigned to read and study Romeo and Juliet I really didn’t want to. So much so that I didn’t read ANY of it, none. I mean I couldn’t even tell you the characters or anyone. Now you may be asking how I got a 66 on the 60 question exam, I watched the 1996 Leonardo DiCaprio version the night before (well morning, more like at 1 am). SO when I read for enjoyment I generally have to LOVE the book like I do scythe. Because to be honest I haven’t found a SERIES I want to read the full one of that isn’t scythe. What im trying to say is I’m beginning to get a bit bored with the book… yeeeah you don’t want to hear that but IM SORRY!!!! It’s not my fault my brain has high standards for books! Its weird, even a book about a subject or idea I like or I know for a fact I enjoy if I don’t love it I have a bad habit of dropping them. I really want to get completely into it again but im falling short. Hope it gets better.

I’m not liking Glass sword. I like the idea, I love the universe and characters and the way Victoria Aveyard wrights in detail is UGG oh so beautiful. But to be honest, I don’t really like the way the story is going. I just don’t feel the plot as well as I did in red queen. Like in Red Queen I could tell where the story is going and how layers of plot complexity intertwine with each other and x can’t happen with y in the way because of z or something like that. But with Glass sword I’m kind of just like “oh ok this is happening” and I’m confused. Like the story just feels like its dragging along and I’m not as invested in the story as I thought I would be. I keep coming back to Scythe but I think that’s because I haven’t never found a book like scythe. A book where I want to continue reading and keep the story going no matter how long the books are. Soo I’m excited for the third book of that series but. I think I may ditch glass queen. I may get back to it in the future but for now I think I may explore other books. I’m tempted to venture into romance and because of seeing “love, Simon” and hearing the book is better as always, I may read Simon and the homo sapiens agenda next, we will just have to see.

I'm reading Simon and the homo sapieans agenda but to be honest im going not going to lie i'm a tad bit lost. Well not in the book I mean. I had already watched the movie a few weeks ago so I know the story already. But what i'm trying to say is the story is a bit different. Like in the movie it starts out as an intro to Simon’s life and everything and how blue and Simon meet online first and everything all BEFORE the guy who I cant remember his name jerk geek face sees Simon's emails to blue and blackmails him. Oh and get this, why you may ask??? Because the weird jerk geek face guy likes one of Simon's best friends. Pretty dirty move huh? Anyways i'm kinda confused. The beginning of the book starts out at the black mail and then it goes into the emails between blue and Simon. Aaand i'm not going to lie I haven’t gotten any further then that. Oh did I mention Simon's gay, but you knew that I think. Aanyways i'm going to work on my essay and like everything else I have. Talk next week!!

The whole story and setting is so relatable and understanding. I mean I get it, it’s a “rom com” and also realistic fiction but STILL. Its freaking awesome and I love it. The whole lost thing turned out me just being an idiot and not thinking. Of course the book is going to be different from the movie, that’s just how It works. The movie had A LOT of backstory to allow the viewer to understand the story easier while the book you learn bits and pieces throughout it and its really cool! The format of the book is also really really really cool. So not only did the author make sure to not shy away from language and things that you hear about in high school like Friday night parties, drugs and alcohol, WAAAY too much cursing, the workload of school and of course the awkward situations you find yourself in. But while Simon talks to Blue, an anonymous boy from Simon’s school who talks to him through emails there are these whole chapters full of their conversations! Like it will be a normal in real life chapter like a normal book would work but then like two chapters later its these long emails back and forth between Jaques (Simons fake name) and blue. They are really cool! The format of the emails are also pretty dang accurate.

Soo I finishes the book. Turns out Bram was Blue, yeah that one, the one who we first meet at the Halloween October party thing and was with some girl and Simon walked in on him? Yeah that Bram, He’s Gay apparently so that’s a plot twist and a half. I really liked the book, it had a lot of good points and times throughout the entire story and I think it was really well put together. I mean it was a romance novel for sure, I’m not exactly sure how I feel about them, romance books I mean. I like them but it seems like you get a lot of cheesy and cliché parts or at least a couple. Anyways overall a pretty good book, I say six and a half out of ten. Aaaaanyways time for talking about my new book. So I spent a good bit of time in the library figuring out a book and when I finally found one I think I would like its not in. It wasn’t until I went back to class after school to pick it up from Mrs. Terry. SOO drum roll please… Throne of Glass. I don’t exactly know why I didn’t just say the name of the book and put it at that but it was more fun. Also it helps hide the fact I know nothing about this book. Well almost nothing, I know the main character is a female assassin and there’s romance. Should be a good one!
